Personally, I prefer a palm-sized book reader, because I can carry it everywhere. Something the size of a Kindle or iPad is too big for that.
I'll stick to good ol' fashioned books printed on paper.

Sometimes, in spite of the majestic Apple hype machine they get things wrong:

Freshly brewed coffee, Irish whiskey, and lightly whipped cream. Ok, I'll give that a "maybe". ![]() But old fashioned books dont need batteries ![]() I could see the use of eBooks for colleges. No need to spend $400+ on books. No need to lug around a bunch of heavy text books that will only have 1 or 2 chapters used. _____________________

From Cult of Mac: "The iPad is not for geeks. It’s for ordinary people who want a lightweight computer and are sick of computer headaches. This is a machine you’d buy for your grandmother and not have to worry about tech-support. The iPad is the first computer for people who are completely computer illiterate — and there’s millions of them." ^THAT^ and I am one of them. |

Of course, a non-jailbroken iPad may be no substitute for a Kindle either, for folks who like the grey-on-grey epaper look, or if there's never a channel agreement between Amazon and the "iBookstore". There's already an iPhone Kindle app so it probably is a substitute for a Kindle. _____________________

The Financial Times today said that there was likely to be a legal scrap over Apple's use of the brand name, iPad, as this was already a trademarked name (including, for the poster who suggested it sounded like an woman's hygiene product, a padded bra), and worse of all, it is already the name of a handheld computer, developed by Fujitsu.

'Fat'??? Sure, if you call an extra 1.1mm on its thickness compared to the iPhone 'fat'. I'm sure you realize my intent was to signify that it's a lot bigger. We can use the word "bigger" rather than "fat" if you like. and at $499 compared with an unlocked 16GB iPhone of $600 it is cheaper. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Apple-iPhone-3GS-16GB-FACTORY-UNLOCKED-NEW_W0QQitemZ280456715061QQcategoryZ3312QQcmdZViewItem Not really fair to compare the super deluxe top of the line version of the iPhone to the cheapest version of the iPad. |

Not really fair to compare the super deluxe top of the line version of the iPhone to the cheapest version of the iPad. Which models were you comparing? The super deluxe top of the line version of the iPad to the cheapest version of the iPhone? I think my comparison was very fair. You cannot compare on price if you take the locked version of the iPhone, which is usually tied to a carrier's contract, so I compared the unlocked version; and I also chose the model of iPhone that had the same memory as the iPad. What is unfair with that comparison? Rock _____________________

What is unfair with that comparison? The $499 16GB iPad doesn't have 3G wireless. _____________________

When you put it that way, I'd rather have the 64GB iPod Touch.

But I can't carry 30 old fashioned books in my pocket. Wuss! ![]() When it comes to MP3 players, I went with the Creative Zen 8GB. Sure, 8 GB only and not a touchscreen, but when you spend your day driving around a touchscreen means taking your eyes off the road. Ok, that & it has the FM Radio. AND- I have a 32GB SD Card in it to hold movies & music. No problems with "sync'ing". Windows treats it like an external hard drive, which I've also used it for. It lacks "apps" and such, but I'm not tied to any 1 software package. ![]() It'll let me rip my CD's to MP3's, collect data on them, get the album covers, then store them. I can keep a copy of the song on my desktop, laptop, netbook. ZERO DRM. OH! My sister wanted to know about MP3 Players. She asked "Where do you get MP3s??" Would you believe she doesnt have a SINGLE MP3 on her computer??????????? ![]() _____________________

Not only with AT&t
01-30-2010 08:09
i believe iPad will only work with AT&T (so will limit usability). please someone correct me if i'm wrong. I suspect most people will use it through WiFi. I have started Touch Life on my iPhone rather than running up the stairs to my laptop or desktop. This gives me improving flexibility in responding to requests, checking in with friends. I have also used it on 3G for making payments and quick chats. Despite the continuing improvements, TL is not immersive SL. It will take the larger screen size of the iPad to bring this to reality. I hope the folks at TL can make this happen. Given the exponetial growth of home and business WiFi networks I can see WiFi as the initial use location. You could be in a friends home with several of you on at the same time. True, you could do this with laptops but an iPad would be so much more convenient and less bulky. Time will tell and this won't be for everyone, but we are already talking about how this will increase our time in SL...and that's a good thing. |

Not a bigger iPod Touch
01-30-2010 08:29
I was greatly disappointed when I saw it was a bigger version of my iPod Touch. It seems like an expensive e-reader right now more than anything. Maybe after a few generations of development it will be worth replacing my iPod with. Not sure how it could ever run SL though. Actually not. The screen real estate will open up new opportunities for developers. As an example, now if I am in world and I want to check for stage lighting I have to open XStreet in a browser and toggle back n forth between two apps to locate something I am interested in checking out. Then I have bring up the slurl before finally tping to the destination. In an iPad execution it would be great to use the split view. So I am in my club that is under development, have the rigging in place for lights. Want to see what some of the new lights and controllers are, tap a place on the screen opening up a split view with XStreet displayed in the additional view. I can now search from the same screen without toggling between applications. SL on one side without having to have a web window blocking my view and XStreet on the other. Another tap and XStreet closes and I'm back to full screen SL. Just a thought. |

So it is for people who check e-mail and surf the web (sites that do not use flash anyway) mostly. I can't wait to try one out but I am pretty certain I will be holding off on buying one until it has a camera and atleast double the storage. I have always bought more storage in my iPhones, but not sure this is what I will do with the iPad. My 3G S has 488 songs, 36 videos, 560 photos, and 75 apps. Capacity is 29.3 gb with the OS taking the rest if the 32gb. I still have 21.5 gb available. I initially thought leaving the camera out was a misstep till I thought of how a front facing camera would work vs a cam built into a display or fixed on a table. I do quite a bit of live videostreaming to Ustream using the 3G S so I have a fair understanding of how the cam works. Last night started to hold the 3G S in different orientations and trying to determine where to place a front facing cam. Try it on ur iPhone or cell. Then tried to imagine doing this on an iPad. I came away with two thoughts. I spend a lot more time sitting in a non-computer chair answering email and forum postings than at a desk with the desktop or laptop doing business tasks or SL stuff. I really don't want peeps ringing me for a skype or iChat video conference when I am in relax mode on an iPad. Also, I am personally thankful Apple didn't include a front facing cam. No matter how I oriented the iPhone imagining an iPad, all I thought about is a front facing cam gives peeps a good view of looking up my nostrils, something I wouldn't do to my worst enemy. I've held the iPhone vertical to video a live event for 5 mins with minimum shake...and 40 mins with table support. I can't imagine holding an iPad at arms length to take part in a vid chat. I really don't want it resting on my lap looking up my nose. The only way I could think to get a good vid chat orientation as to put it in a holder on my desk or hang on the wall which defeats the purpose if resting this on my lap in relax mode. |

I'm not sure what the point of an iPad is suppose to be. I love my iPod Touch. You want to give me a bigger one? Bonus! I was just telling my wife this morning that if we traded our two newspaper subscriptions in for an iPad* you can have the whole internet at the breakfast table when you enjoy that morning cup of coffee. She isn't sold... yet. Our house is WIFI, so there's no need for ATT. *Pays for itself in about a year. _____________________

If Apple would stop dragging its feet about including Flash support in its portable devices, I would love to use something like the iPad to surf the web. I think I read that an estimated 70% of websites currently use Flash. I know most of my favorties do anyway. So for me it would still be a crippled web experience not a complete or "magical" one. |
