I wish I had invented something called the "Paperback" - I would be richer than Bill Gates and 50 other billionaires by now.

Even with my desktop I keep as much off it as I can - I stick everything on external drives instead. It's still got too many programs I hardly use on it, but at least data doesn't need to gum up the works. It seems we need to get used to traveling light and accessing from the web or other places. The iPad would be useful with Aviary, as that suite is web-based.

From Cult of Mac:

"The iPad is not for geeks. It’s for ordinary people who want a lightweight computer and are sick of computer headaches. This is a machine you’d buy for your grandmother and not have to worry about tech-support.

The iPad is the first computer for people who are completely computer illiterate — and there’s millions of them."
Um, we already have "the first computer for people who are completely computer illiterate". It's called "Macintosh". I think "The Cult of Mac" has finally jumped the shark.

64 Gigs isn't enough for you?
I've got 55 gigs of music, 5 gigs of video, and 10 gigs of archived text on my laptop already.

I think it would a great gift for your Aunt. My mother used to have WebTV, and was talking about getting it again. (She got rid of it at one point). I told her a netbook would be a better choice than WebTV, but with the iPad being way better than some cheesy netbook, I'm going to suggest that for her. I'm not sure what you mean by security, but if you mean accessing the unit, It appears to run similar software to the iPhone. I have an iPhone, and you can set it up so you need to enter a 4 digit code to access the unit. As far as the over the air security is concerned, I imagine it would be the same as any other WIFI connection. Also, 3G connections are pretty secure too (if you're thinking of the 3G model, and the AT&T account). You could most likely set her up with the $15/month - 250 mb package from AT&T.

Thanks Johan and yes I have an iphone which has the 4 digit security code. If ipad has that then it will be perfect for her. Her b-day is in April and it is supposed to be available then, it will be a wonderful gift for her 88th b-day.

I'm not sure what the point of an iPad is suppose to be. It's a big fat iPhone, but it doesn't have the phone capability. It's more expensive. The only thing I read about it that sets it apart is that its great for e-books. I suppose you could also use it to keep notes in a meeting.

'Fat'??? Sure, if you call an extra 1.1mm on its thickness compared to the iPhone 'fat'.

The iPad has a built-in mike and speakers, has Skype, so you can make calls with it.

and at $499 compared with an unlocked 16GB iPhone of $600 it is cheaper.

Of course Tablets have been around for some years now. The problem was Microsoft trying to put something out but not thinking it through well enough. Or rather not finding a company that did it better so they could buy them and call it theirs.
As usual, Apple have grabbed the ball and will score the Try (or Touchdown, for the Americans).

Soon enough the clones will appear (maybe running Linux, if they can get that working!)
but surely running Windows of some sort. C'mon China, where are ya.

Hopefully before too long (I've only got another 20 years tops) a very portable, fully featured, connect everywhere, lightweight, roll or fold up, do it all, very affordable gadget will be around.

Tablets running Android have already been demonstrated and quite possibly will be available before the iPad 3G ships. If they're announced first and released first, which is the clone?

1st- iPad is the dumbest name. Sounds like a feminine hygiene product.

2nd- No Flash support.

3rd- Its a Giant iPod Touch.

4th- Can I take a document from the iPad, put it on a Memory card or use a simple USB cable to transfer that document to another computer? Nope!!!

5th- It's a Giant iPod Touch.

6th- I sit on the couch, on a bus or a plane, with a Netbook on my lap and the screen facing me. The iPad would lay flat. I wouldnt want to sit all hunched over.

7th- Touch screens are very "smudgy". SO you take it with you to show your artwork to someone. The nice shiny screen catches every bit of glare from the lights, even showing the fingerprints from you swiping all over the screen.

8th- How fast can anyone touch type on a touch screen without looking?? Kinda kills the idea of being useful for taking notes in a class lecture.

9th- It's a Giant iPod Touch.

10th- No real dedicated 3D support. The A4 is an "all-in-one" processor.

11th- My netbook has a 160 GB hard drive, 3 USB Ports, 1 SD Card Slot, VGA output, WiFi, bluetooth, and Ethernet. Runs Flash, runs SL, Physical Keyboard, WebCam & Mic, and for a measly $50 I have an external DVD Drive. Did I mention the screen angle is adjustable to almost any angle without needing to buy an "accessory"???

12th- 3G costs extra. WiFi doesnt cost extra, but good luck using that for SL. Not that 3G would be any be much better. I'm sure AT&T has super 3G all over the world in all places. ;)

13th- It's a Giant iPod Touch.

All considered, I'm not impresed.

That's not entirely true... if you want true 'phone call' capability, you're going to want the 3G version which is $130 more, making it $29 more than an iPhone. Not that I'm against it, I'm totally for it, and they'll sell millions of them. The higher end netbooks run about the same, and I think if someone's in the market for a netbook, the iPad's going to be the way to go.

Yeah, I'm thinking about getting my 2 sisters and brother together to go in for one for my mother (who's um.... 72 now) :) I also think it's a great choice for older folks who typically have a more difficult time figuring out computers, and, as I'm sure you know from being an iPhone owner, it's such an intuitive interface, you can teach just about anyone how to navigate it in minutes. She'll love it :)

Score the 'Try' huh... I'll have to remember that one ;)

And I totally agree, same story yet again. Apple is blazing the new trails, raising the bar, while Microsoft looks like it's standing still. It still amazes me how many people think MS is, or ever was, an innovative company. They're not, never have been, likely never will be either. They made some smart moves early on that made them king, but since then, they've done nothing but buy, steal, lean on, etc, to get by. What amazes me about Apple more than anything in recent times is the aggressive pricing. They are putting out top notch equipment at lower prices than the competition (read blackberry) is (or at least was) charging for lesser hardware.

They need to wait until they can buy one before they start tearing it apart to copy it... lol

LMAO
The rest of the post was right on IMO. My first thought, considering the underpowered, proprietary, and DRM'ed nature of it, was why not get a decent netbook instead.

Apple is kinda the typical example, to me of a company that now that they have forged their position as revolutionary and innovator can sell any kind of overpriced crap, and peoples will thank them for it.

Oh yeah it's single task -_-.

Oh, is this the right room for the smug PC users convention? I wasn't sure from the sign on the door.

So without 3G it's a big iPod touch: Why is that a bad thing? Try reading ebooks on an iPod touch (or an iPhone)--possible, but no substitute for a Kindle.

Of course, a non-jailbroken iPad may be no substitute for a Kindle either, for folks who like the grey-on-grey epaper look, or if there's never a channel agreement between Amazon and the "iBookstore". Also, Apple says iBooks is only available in the US, and I can't find where they say shopping and downloading from the iBookstore will be free on 3G without a carrier contract.

Personally, I prefer a palm-sized book reader, because I can carry it everywhere. Something the size of a Kindle or iPad is too big for that.
