Nicholaz has been working on memory leaks in the client now for a while now and does some pretty decent work; most of his patches have been undisputed on the Dev list.

Thanks Strife. I feel somewhat reassured and will give this a try.

His latest version (17d) seems to have solved the cross-eyed bug.

btw in his latest version, he's fixed the wonky eye problem :-). oh and apparently someone at LL admitted not fixing the memory leak thingy in their latest viewer, which they did intend to do, was a major erm......... idiot thing on their part. Nicholaz posted this link in another thread: http://www.secondlifeinsider.com/2007/06/14/leaks-still-leaking/

Can someone tell me what exactly has to be downloaded and installed from the directory page the link takes me to?

EDIT: Never Mind. I got it. Right off the bat It loads a Hell of a lot faster than the regular viewer.

Because he cares? And isn't distracted by trying to make money?

You would think that they would just hire him and 'delete' that 70 percent who aren't doing anything, and save money... :/

All they have to do is put them into Inventory, they will disappear soon enough.

BTW I used this thingy all last night with a switch back to the default viewer for control purposes. Even to my untrained eye the thing works better. Load up is cut in half, Hi lag areas are less so, it just seems a bit smoother. If I ever see this Nicholaz guy in world I'm gonna run up to him and give him a big wet one :)

Almost forgot. The Cross Eyes are no more!!!!

From: Ceera Murakami
If the coder has submitted his code to LL for review, we have hopes of eventually seeing these improvements added to the authorized client. LL would be rather stupid to ignore a fix for their persistent memory leak issues. Until then, I'm on Mac, so I have no choice but to wait.

But even if he offered a Mac version, I still would have a hard time trusting any hacked SL client, no matter how good or noble the author is reputed to be. Just too much chance for something bad to be slipped in with all the shiny good things, and so I wouldn't use it, for the same reason I wouldn't used a hacked ATM to access my RL bank account.

I feel the same way Ceera.

While I realize that the coder has done an excellent job of creating a viewer that runs much better, I am still wary about using something not distributed by LL.

I understand that his credentials back him up and that he has submitted numerous fixes to LL for bug fixes, and I mean no disrespect towards him....but didn't the coders that created the copybot and the some of the other nefarious programs in SL also contribute worthwhile bug fixes to LL?

Sure, no ones had any issues with money disappearing yet or passwords stolen, but who's to say that there isn't a "trojan horse" in the code that is timed to act at a certain time. Why steal passwords and money now when only a few people are using the client when it would be more beneficial to wait several months and strike when many people will be affected?

Again, I mean no direspect to Nicholaz, but I am wary of anything not distributed by LL...and those are my reasons for not using this viewer.

I hope I'm wrong and just being paranoid Nicholaz....the viewer sounds great and would love to try it.
Keep up the good work. :-)

A lot of people are becoming wary of anything distributed BY Linden....... :p

God Dammit this works so good , Nicholaz , you have done all by yourself what a whole team of programers can't . Buddy , you should be the manager of ll's programming department , this was a real upgrade , yep , the real deal , thanks so much for effecting repairs to the client . I can slam through sim borders like they don't exsist , i can go to the laggyist places in sl and no lag , I got more horse power and feel like I'm finally getting my money's worth . Linden Lab , stand up and take notice of what this man has done , hatz off to you Nicholaz .

Seconded!

When I run the LL client, sooner or later I expect to crash. No repeatable reason for this - I can be doing anything or nothing when the client goes down and the crash logger comes in.

When I run Nicholaz's version, I do not crash. (Not yet anyway after about 5 hours use when I would have expected on average to go down twice.)

What more can I say?

yes...at last some real independent input. now... could it be made to live link urls and exe`s? something that sl sucks at.

Yes too, i understand the fears regarding intrusion. They are everywhere else too, not just SL.

but just to have an independent viewer.. wow.. so cool.. so clever..and it works...

now we just need independent servers... laughs..

its alarming that one guy can fix more bugs in a weekend than 70% of LL's coders can fix in three months.

Amazing isn't it. I think its all about attitude.

As a programming manager at one of my jobs, I've had programmers come back and tell me that they couldn't do something in a program after staring at it for several days. I've then look at the same program and had it fixed in less than an hour.

Perhaps Nicholaz isn't being distracted by the LL corporate culture.

Yes, being able to work at one issue at a time undistracted is probably my biggest advantage over the Lindens.

Having 20+ years of C/C++ programming under my belt and having experience from my own line of software sure also helps, but working at one single problem at a time as if no other problem existed, is what makes those memory leak hunts possible.
