I've been playing around with it. Works fine...but haven't tested enough to see much of an improvement over the LL client.

Nevertheless I applaud Nicholaz's awesome efforts at working with the open source and making this available.

I've been using this for weeks-it's really good. One important thing for me is that it doesn't crash - or at least not more often than the regular client.

Best part is the apparently patched memory leak. Ran SL for a good hour without all my virtual memory going poof. That's unheard of from the LL viewer.

Open Source is the best!

Is it possible to compile a Mac version, or is that a whole different animal?

do we really want to be giving out our sl login names and passwords to some third party client?

would you access your bank account and credit cards using a third party client?

paranoid anyone?

It's a patch that loads before the normal client loads. Nothing sinister there. You can also get the source code for it. Nicholaz is one of the most prolific patchers out there-go read up on what he does in JIRA. He just applies the stuff before LL can do it officially.

Huh. Not sure why several are having problems getting to that blog. Oh, and please note that there is a new Nicholaz viewer out if you haven't gotten one yet :) (which I note becase I haven't myself, and noticed a new one released today).

I unpacked 17b and tried to run it (with Vista, by the way - don't know if that makes a difference) and got the message "This application has failed to start because xul.dll was not found". Do I need 17a aswell as b?

edit: /smacks forhead

Reading the instructions is always a good idea! Please ignore this post, I didn't past the .exe into the secondlife directory. D'OH!!

I can't endorse this application enough! The memory leak is vastly reduced! Given that I'm using Vista too, I can do with freeing up all the physical memory I can, and this saved me about 200mb compared to the official viewer!!

Also, I've noticed my CPU usage percentage being a bit lower - where secondlife.exe used about 70% (AMD sempron - yeah I'm, cheap I know, but the money I saved by being a simpler processor allowed me to get more RAM and a better graphics card, so there) now it's around 45-50%. Not sure if there is a reason for that, but i't's something that I noticed.

Sounds interesting but I'm nto 100% sure what I gotta do. Is it a stand alone viewer or a mod of LL's one?

It's a separate .exe file which you import into the same directory that you currently have secondlife.exe (usually c:\programfiles\secondlife for most people, unless you specified somewhere else). As such, the application is technically standalone as it has its own .exe file but it uses a lot of the original SL .dll files. Basically, download the .zip file, and put the file called "Ncholaz.exe" into the directory mentionned above. Then, change the "target" field of your desktop icon, or setup a new one, so it targets Nicholaz.exe instead of Secondlife.exe.

If you have problems running it, simply delete the Nicholaz.exe file and change your desktop icon back to secondlife.exe and it's back to normal.

Sorry, no unknown .exe files for me without major security safeguards. Even if its a patch, if it links into the SL files, it has access to my password and user name and that is a no no for me.

I'll wait for SL to add it to an update.

Won't ever happen. That's the point of making it open source.

Can't say enough good things about this viewer.

On logging in.. instant rez of my home location where with the "Official Viewer" I had to wait for it to rez.

Higher FPS than I have ever gotten w/the "Official Viewer" and the bandwidth is higher.

The colors seem to be brighter and more vivid.

Lag is practically non-existant even using a distance of 512m.

Room chat and IM chat lag is gone.

Friends list is working again.

Thanks, Nicholaz. With viewers like yours SL may juts become fun again.

Oh! Forgot. I'm runnn git on a Notebook w/Vista Home Premium.

I did put the .exe in the secondlife directory and it is giving me the message you mentioned above. Guess I don't know what I'm doing :)

---
update: Ok, now I know i do not know what I'm doing. I must be doing something wrong, because all the texture looks harsh and blurry to me using this other viewer. Or maybe the viewer is just too good and it is showing all the imperfections?

----
update 2: Noticed it before and will note now - this "other" viewer really cuts down on the lag :) . .. textures are starting to look slightly better, but that is my eyes adjusting to the way they are seen in this other viewer :)
