Hi there,

we had our first meeting on friday 03/10/06. There were about 8 people and we chatted about this and that. I think it was nice. We did this meeting at Angel Sunsets little place.

We discussed some hacks that could be done with the Linux client to optimize it. Unfortunately none of the Lindens yet reacted to my plead for a meeting of Linux developers meeting Linux Client users.

Ive made a box that everybody can copy where we can put some Linux stuff inside. Maybe the form should change. Ther idea is that every Linux user could grap this and have some stuff to work with. So share the content!

Finally we thought about when to meet next. We chose to do a meeting on a weekly basis on every saturday starting on March 18th 12:00 SL time (or 8pm GMT, 9 pm CET).

Please add your comments. I sure forget 50% of the content. LOL

Your Vinci

PS: If you are a Linux noob - dont worry - we all still learn. And questions are always welcome.

the linux dev meet is a good idea. but base your meeting around them, their time is worth more than yours.

I would think that this meeting with developers should be on a seperate date. I would give them the chance to propose one. I dont think that we need to meet at our regular meeting. And they have to make the next move if they are interested. We are open to their suggestions. I think most of the Linuxers would subscribe this position?

BTW: For me, my time is more worth. LOL

I have a group called Second Life Users Group. If y'all want to use that one just let me know so I can set it to open enrollment and change the description. On second thought, I'll go ahead and do that.

Missed the first meeting, does anyone have a transcript to post?

Agreed, let's ask them to conduct some regularly scheduled townhalls that we can attend. Once a month? Suggestions?

Any Linux users are welcome to meet at my land.

I have it set up with 4 Numbakulla benches, a Numbakulla table, a penguin and two trees :) Vinci's Linux Box is also there, free to copy or buy at L$0 (if you have the spare change...).

It is at Maryport (181,147) and allows building. It is however set to the Linux Client Users group, with auto return at 5 minutes.

Unfortunately I cannot set it to two groups at once, and the auto return is there to prevent a garbage effect, since I only go there for the meetings, really :D

I would be delighted if this land got regular use by any Linux groups!

I have set the land as a Gathering Place, and it is 512 sq m. Theoretically, anyone in the Linux Client User Group should be able to post events on this land now!

I can not see the location. Can you do it?

We agreed to do the meeting on a weekly basis. But every second week we have a formal topic. So next time should be formal one. I would suggest to announce:

"
On this meeting we want to discuss all issues related to the Linux Alpha Client: hacks, settings, rumours, graphic cards, requirements, etc.

"

For the seating I would suggest that we need more seats. Last time it was quite crowded. If we grow that might become a problem (although somehow we can make it in SL, because standing and flying is OK.). I would suggest something more like an arena (small and round with one end open). But thats just an idea. But I would say we have about 4*3 real seats (so about 12) now.

Hi Vinci,

I have set an event for coming Saturday - Linux Users Meeting, at 12:00 pm Game time.

The place name has been fiddled to read LUG Meeting Place.

The location is still the same: Maryport(181,147).

I will try to set some more benches out, unless someone wants to build something themselves? If you are in the Linux Alpha Tester group, you can build and not have your stuff auto-returned :)

group owned land
03-12-2006 11:36
We can also think about group owned land. Maybe Angel likes to sell this small place? ;-)

You COULD do that, Vinci...

My land actually costs me nothing, since it fills my tier :)

And I am perfectly happy that the group uses this land indefintely, as often as it likes.

Even going there today, to add two more benches and a table, I got vistied by interested people.

I like it like this; but if the move is to Group Lnad, I will certainly make it available...

But makes things complicated. Yesterday I stumbled itno a lesson atnthe New Citizen Plaza and learned some things. Group owned land can be selled bay all officers. We would have to think that through. The groups we have are leaded by Phoenix Linden (Linux users) and Cory Linden (Linux Client users). I've never met one of these, nor got IM back.

Please don't say this. Your land included in the price of your premium account. It's not free. It's very good of you to donate your land to the cause; but if you want to keep it, don't group it. You give up personal ownership of the land when you deed it to a group. If you're not an officer, you won't even be able to reclaim it. Furthermore, Lindens aren't supposed to belong to land owning groups because it appears improprietous.

I hate it when they do this. Your World, Your Imagination but we'll head up your groups and then not schedule any meetings with you. Bleeech

Cory (cory@lindenlab.com) will answer email. cc to Don and Robin; you'll likely get a reply from Robin first.

Is improprietous a word? Hm one thinks not.

Hi Khamon,

I am simple minded, and would use the word "improper", even if it's not exact :D

As for the land: I am very happy to keep it, and make it permanently avalaible to the Linux Users as a meeting point.

As far as the costs go, it doesn't cost me any extra. I have land anyhow, and over basic 512 sq m tier, which I cannot bear to sell. So in that sense, no extra costs. Of course, I pay premium and tier too - but that is my "get rich slow" plan :D . I get L$ 500 a week, and am saving to buy out Anshe...

And that is a very good point: the Linux Alpha Users group has more Lindens than a Town Hall meeting! So it would be best if I just keep the land as it is, and wish everyone a merry meeting place ;)

By the way, I was serious about redecorating: if anyone wants to do this, please feel free! I like the "6 bench 2 tables" look, for a group meeting, and think an arena style is better for " a speaker and an audience" type of event. But I am not stuck on this idea.

With the new release out it should be clear that we do investigate the progresses in our next meeting. And maybe help ourselves in fixing new and old bugs. So everybody with problems and questions come!

Meeting 03182006 summary
03-18-2006 17:52
So we had our second meeting. As I promised I did made some notes. Damn you guys type fast... so I could not talk so much. And I also had to help my neighbour with his computer every 10 minutes...

Nonetheless I have gone through the copy of the chat to make a short summary. In relation to our first meeting where there were 8 Linux geeks we now where 21 altogether. So the place was filled well. I missed the presence of Angel who has made this place available to us.

As you can imagine most of us where not happy with the fact that we could not use an Linux Client of version 1.9 to come to the meeting. So ppl came with Wine, Windows an Mac clients.

To the Lindens a short list of what people wish:
* we want 1.9!!!
* full screen modus
* kill all bugs
* sound in next alpha client
* more uptodate information about the status. maybe we can see a blog of the actual progress?
* Icculus should get more money, so he finishes work more quick :)
* most (not all) think that open source at least parts of the files would increase the development speed and would not force us to do dirty hacking in order to circumvent bugs.
* more information about how things work

We also miss some of the Lindens that would be available in SL to talk to us, come to one of our meeting or answer IMs.

Ppl are preparing their systems to get updated to the new Xorg 7 ( Fedora in March 20th, Ubuntu and SusE next month). There was some excitement about the switch to the Mono platfom (as always at Linux meetings not from all attendends).

I announced that I would collect information on free scripts. I mean in the sense of free licensed and also good scripts. So I can make a listing. I think about some kind of directory like openclipart.org. A ressource for users to start with scripting - look at code, learn. I know, actually there are thousands of "free" scripts. But I don't want to collect all. Only those of a "good" use. Ok and this depends on how you define the word "good". ;-) We'll see.

We were also thinking about doing more research on our parts because of the slow progress (that in fact leaves us with no client available, thats the problem) because of different priorities of LL. Many users have not yet upgraded their account because no client was available.

A fact that was new to me at least was that objects can send and receive Emails via XML-RPC.

For me this was again a great meeting. I have the feeling that our meeting has already grown up, meaning that it does not need me or Angel to advertise. Everybody seems to be actively promoting this meetings and group activity, making suggestions, etc..

As always please add your comments about the meeting. I might have forgotten to add some contents that you think is important.

The next meeting (as weekly) will be at March 25th 2006. This will not have a specific topics, so be more of a general Linux meeting. Todays meeting was more of directed to the Linux Client as such. As the groups Linux Users and Linux Client Users have very many members in common I am thinking to once IM Linux users and once Linux Client users. So everybody can decide on what meetings he likes to be more. You can also talk abouth the client on next meeting, though ;-)

cu,

Vinci

Vince, could you make the transcript of the chat available? Even when I was there, there was so much going on I missed whole topics of convo, and I'd love to know what was discussed when I had to leave.
and, aw, man, I just looked at the pics, my hair's got a big bald spot, and of course I've got no client I can actually edit my appearance in. Lindens, hurry up and release the 1.9 linux!

I wouldn't really want a transcript of anything I say in any context reaching a public forum. If such a thing were to happen, I think that potential participants should be warned or given the option to opt out.

I won't do. I did not plan to. Everybody can make copies of his own. We would have to announce if we do so. btw I would love to have a chat recorder. Yesterday I did it via chat history "select all" and paste into external text editor.

It is really hard to get out some facts out of a chat log. I see our meeting more as an opportunity to gather some facts and have fun. We then could put new facts in forum and wiki. There they can much easier discussed and edited.

BTW: I already deleted the chat log.

Thanks for the summary, Vinci :D I am sorry I mssed it.

Publishing a transcript is only allowed in very exceptional circumstances, as far as I know. Edited transcripts get posted after Town Halls, for example, but usually posting transcripts is a violation of the TOS, I think.
