The download there (1.8.4.6) already stoped working, right?

I get the same message as yesterday with the "Dowload" or "Quit" options, no "Continue"

It works, but it has a BIG bug with moving textures. The client freezes.

This happens near waterfalls, fountains, etc etc...

In 1.8.4.7 it is fixed.

The "Linux Download Message" is an error - it tries to downlod the MAC version... You have to download from the Web Link.

Well, since I saw nobody else complain in the forum I was starting to fear the error was in Layer 8. Thanks for corroborating it really is an issue.

I was in SL 30 minutes ago with the 1.8.4.6. It works, but there ARE major issues...

I hope the Linux Client gets up soon!

SOmetime in the next week?

What's so hard in typing "make"? :)

I realize there might me more involved in this than "make" but it would be a nice thing to NOT make an update MANDATORY as long as the build is not available to all users. I can live with low FPS for the time being, but shutting off all users of an OS just because of this seems ... disproportional.

I think all of us would greatly appreciate if the update could be made OPTIONAL again until we have the chance to upgrade.

:/

My thaughts exactly. If they're going to release a client and expect people to use it, it has to be kept bang upto date - otherwise whats the point. "Sometime in the next week" is utterly unacceptable.

I only signed up because of the Linux client.

Exactly! I rather have bad textures than nothing at all
Why did they even have to make it mandatory? Visual glitches aren't going to kill anyone =P

How do I "install" this?
03-09-2006 19:00
I downloaded what looks to be a directory that doesn't need installed. I clicked on what looks like an executable (SecondLife_1_8_4_7/secondlife` and `SecondLife_1_8_4_7/bin/secondlife-bin`) and nothing happened. Nothing at all. No errors no nothing.

What should I do now? (Please don't tell me to go back to windows. I'm trying. Honest I am.)

No. The link is down at the moment, cos the client is not ready yet.

We are all waiting (im)patiently :p

To get a rough idea of how many people using Linux, see this thread: /263/f4/86208/1.html

You need to keep in mind that only a small percentage of users read / participate in the forum, too, so the number will be much higher than shown in the poll.

The last Linux alpha version released was 1.8.4.7. 1.9 hasn't been released for Linux yet (the autoupdate feature doesn't work with the Linux alpha).

I may be completely wronge on my thought here but i figured i'd say it anyways...

Updates are manditory because they update their servers as well what goes on your computer. Making it so if you have an older version of Second Life it wont work properly because the commands it's trying to send to the server are no longer recognized.

P.S. oh yah and what do you think of th Linux OS called Ubuntu, i'm in the proccess of installing it to on of my computers?

Yep. Networking API changes can bite. *Ideally*, they'd make a standard and stick with it, ala HTTP 1.1 / Telnet / SSH / any major networking protocol. But they're constantly evolving the system, and the client & server are prettly closely coupled, so that's difficult here.

Synergy did this to me recently... the server machine (Ubuntu) had an older version than the 2 client machines (gentoo & WinXP).

But you'll notice not every server update changes the API... we were able to run build 19 for a while before build 21 became mandatory. They do that staggered approach to give everyone time to make the shift. I think the only times the API changes is when we're required to update immediately, no previous clients allowed...

From: someone

Well, except for the outdated Synergy package, I think it's a pretty nice distro. It went on my "new" laptop because I am NOT about to wait for gentoo to install on a 500 MHz laptop with 256 Mb RAM. I'm crazy, but not *that* crazy...

Anyway, I've had a pretty good experience with it. The more things you want to customize, though, the

Also, yours was the first reply to this thread in over a month! Doesn't matter much since it's a sticky and these forums are very light traffic, but in general, watch out: reviving dead threads without a very good reason pisses some people off...

Linux and SL, is it worth it?
07-02-2006 08:54
I've been starting to give some serious thought to trying to run a Linux build on my system (haven't decided which one yet, want to see what one will best suit my needs), but from what I've been seeing about the update issues, is it even worth me making the change if SL is at risk of being down for extended periods of time (which the users are still paying for I might add)?

Oh, and for the curious, the other things I would mostly use this computer for are Yahoo, MS Office, web browsing (all of which should be fine), and MS ActiveSync for my iPaq (another point of contention that I'd have to look into)

Those days are past us. If you look at the last post in this thread (before yours), it's almost 2 months old. The Linux download link has been moved to the main download page, and we get updates within an hour or two of the stable builds.

There *ARE* problems with the Linux client. It depends on what you want to do. In-game sounds don't work, streaming videos don't work. There's a script around here that lets you do streaming music, though. See the known bugs page for more info on what you can expect not to have working. And it's always possible to run the Windows client through wine. There's info on these forums about getting it working, I believe.

Well, MS Office would be replaced by Open Office (which reads/writes all of MS's formats fine), firefox is the King of the Web Browsers, and while you can't have MS ActiveSync, SynCE may do what you need: http://synce.sourceforge.net/synce/index.php
