Sort of Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, and it works without any problems once I installed my graphics drivers.

Voted SUSE, am actually using FreeBSD, but with the SUSE compatability libs.

Works, although the game refuses to use more than 16MB of my cards memory, even after I told it to use 128mb. Other than that, it's working great.

Ubuntu baby. Free CDs, easy to install, nice compatability with my ATI card. Actually the only other distro I've installed that didn't have some issue with my system was Gentoo, but I don't feel like playing ricer.

Actually I think Jarod has run it with Knoppix after expanding it to an NTFS partition created by XP but he doesn't post to the forum consistently so I threw it in for him.

I'm running it on 64-bit Ubuntu with an Athlon 64 and Nvidia bus. It's working great EXCEPT FOR THE HOTKEYS!

Oh and Shiny. I can't get Shiny to work at all.

BTW, it also works okay in 32-bit Ubuntu running on a VMWare server inside a native XP environment. Still ain't got no Shiny though.

Solaris. :)

Actually, v10 for x86 *can* run Linux apps (was researching it for work). Though why you'd want to is another matter, plus it appears rather complicated. Still, thanks for voting. :)

Anyway, my useage at home has been Fedora 4, mostly because the one notebook happens to be x64 (an AMD Turion). The other notebook has issues with X upon book (x86, a true P4 HT CPU) and so I may disable X and have it boot to text console mode.

Fedora Core 4 on my Tecra A3. I'm going to put it on my dekstop too. I've been getting comfortable in windows though before firing it up in Linux so that I have something to base it against.

Ubuntu 5.10 gotta say it's a great distro, it's a debian based system, but it updates ALOT more often.

Xandros BE
02-26-2006 13:35
I've used and installed a plethora of *NIXs and *BSDs. Nothing just plain works on more x86 hardware than Xandros. It just works.. First time around. No filtering an internet search to find answers and drivers. Just put it in and your done. A few updates for security, nothing fancy. It's not bleeding edge, but then again, your not bleeding after using it either..

Xandros!
03-18-2006 14:51
I have used Ubuntu, and when I have a spare computer I will install it on there.
I like Xandros bc as another poster said it jsut works. The instant acccess to my old windows partitions on the other drives is handy like you cant believe. I like Ubuntu for basic users (most people) but for me it's still a little clunky for the more advanced things I like to fiddle with. Also with Xandros there is less app installing. it comes with Real player and firefox.

The downside (all 'nixes have this i think) is setting up Firefox 1.5. I jsut figured out how to do it tonight. I can't seem to find a current copy of Winamp for Linux. Any ideas?

I'm also waiting for the latest Linux alpha for SL as I can't seem to be able to get the current 1.8.x to work. :\

Source Mage. Good distro, but they don't feel like pinning a version of 1.0 to it yet. (Very close now though.) Decent community too.

Debian (my one and only distro since 1996)

Unstable, of course. Just finished a buncha upgrades, unfortunately, SL starts, lets me log in, then crashes. Hard. Had to reset to get my box back. Might be the r300 driver (ATI Radeon 9600XT, with the non-ATI r300 driver, maybe try with fglrx later).

Winamp for Linux never made it out of beta, AFAIK... Is there a good reason not to use XMMS or BMP? Or maybe something like Rhythmbox or AmaroK if you need more iTunesy features?

As far as setting up FF 1.5 goes, eh? Just that it's necessary, or is it actually /hard/ on some distros?

As for me, though, Gentoo. Nothing else lets me customize so much, and unlike Ubuntu/Xandros/Red Hat/Mandriva, it gets out of your way and lets you configure things, if you know what you want. No wrestling with shiny autoconfigurators that overwrite manual changes - unless you want to! (Yes, I know this is a downside for newbies, but it's an upside for veterans. Use what works!)

Ah`ve got Knoppix 3.6 (Linux Bible 2005 Live DVD) runnin` on ma other machine (500mhz P3 Win98) as Ah types this on ma 350mhz P2 Win98 box, an` Ah have D*** Small Linux 0.9.0 (Linux Bible 2005 Live CD) installed on th` system`s VFAT Win98 partition(!). (Runs fine. :) Boots from it, too! :D Ask me how! ;p ) Subject ta change when ma new custom-built Second Life box arrives in a couple o` weeks. (Ma current systems haint got what it takes ta host th` client, either WinXP or Linux; Ah`s usin `em ta try ta work out th` bugs afore th` special box arrives. Llauren Mandelbrot`s birthday`ll be when Ah c`n get th` client (either one) ta work. Wish me luck?)
