Am I the only one who's been getting more than average weird, nonsensical IMs these days?

Just today:
[13:18] [name withheld]: who are u

[22:56] [other crazy person]: hey can i get a copy of you global thermonuclear war thingy?

[11:37] [random person]: IM me when ur online i wanna ask some things

What are people thinking when they message you? And why on earth do people just IM you when you're offline with just "hi". Or the messages that people leave, "IM me when ur on".

I don't get it - I don't reply to offline IMs if I don't know the person who's IMing me, or what their intent is.

Proposal:
It costs L$100 to IM someone who's not in your contact list. This L$100 is payable to LL, but is immediately refunded if they reply to your IM.

This would eliminate the junk IMs that we keep getting that cap our offline IM limit.

What do you think?

WHO BE U?

I've gotten a bunch of the "hi" ones too. Heh.

I wish there was a more convenient way to manage IMs, but today, I like Fran's idea and I just hope more people read the text in my profile so (1) they don't think I'm ignoring them and (2) I can get to it if it's important, like it sez.

I think this is a great idea!

[23:27] [random weirdo]: If u are Im me

Yes I've noticed a large increase, probably relative to the increase in the population...

- I love xxxx tell me how to make one

- where is your store I want xxx

- I want xxx where are they

- hello

- are you online

- how can I buy xxx

- Love your AV blah blah variations...

- It's not working.

- I bought xxx now I can't find it. (<-- VERY COMMON )

etc etc ... and these are only examples of the polite ones.

These kind of IMs nearly always come from newbs ( which is sometimes excusable ) or from dumb / lazy types who don't understand the meaning of any kind of protocol in RL or SL.

I think the problem is most people are plain lazy and the IM button is on the first tab of the profile window. If the IM button was only on the Picks tab maybe people might actually read our picks to find our store locations and maybe even read our profile comments too.

Also a lot of newbs just don't realise IMs are capped and their attempts at communication are only compounding the problem.

I normally check the profiles of strangers who IM me, if they're older than a month or two and, if the IM requires me to contact them to find out what they wanted, they'll be ignored.

Also like poor Moopf atm, I get a large number of people who think I've made something they've bought out of a vendor I created. Many people don't understand the difference between owner and creator.

A great idea but is Second Life really stable enough for a charge like that? Every now and then our friend's lists are totally unreliable, informing us that people are online when they're not, that they're offline when they're online, or that everybody is offline which - when you've gathered a large friend's list - is very hard to believe. Yes, sometimes sending an IM will reactivate their online status, but many times it won't and the IM will go to the person's email even though they are online.

Imagine the fun to be had in the support department when these visibility issues reoccur and thousands of users are unfairly charged $L100.

[18:29] Someone IneverHeardof: (Saved Sun Mar 18 20:47:04 2007) I understand that you're a master. I'm hoping you can lead me to a "fake" or "replica" avatar that I could prop up in front of my studio. Preferably in the sitting position, leaning against a wall, sleeping. Nobody seems to be able to provide me with one and tell me I need a master. I'm not sure I can afford one or the amount of prims it might take but I look forward to any information you can provide me. Thank You
