From: Siggy Romulus Still think Vegas is the town to beat - hotels that suit everyones budget - major airport 15 mins from the strip - every major hotel has convention rooms, thats not including the 2 major convention centers... Bars and entertainment oportunities ranging from fine art to tittie bars.... Lot to think about there. Oy, mate! Set up your own meetup, wouldja?!

Lot to think about there. Yay for Vegas! I'm not sure I'm allowed in Texas...

I have no problem going to Texas, wherever (assuming near a major airport, natch) or Vegas. Just tell me where the bars are.

hehehe, wow, at this rate we're going to have enough booze for a hell of a party, BYOB style! I hear the women in Dallas are something to behold, but I've heard Austin rocks. Maybe work it around SxSW so those music lovers amongst us can do both on one trip! Regards, -Flip

Now, Flip, that's just plain wrong.

From: FlipperPA Peregrine Maybe work it around SxSW so those music lovers amongst us can do both on one trip! Unless you're here specifically for SXSW? You don't wanna be anywhere NEAR Austin at the same time. Un-navigable. Overcrowded. Celebrity-riddled clusterf*ck. (But then, I'm a townie --- and prefer my city when it's more casual and relaxed, when it's not all hopped up on goofballs.) So, any other time: Y!E!S! There is no finer city, in so many ways, than Austin for a gathering. (But, really, this is a tangential thread. I must start one to facilitate our SMALL, local get-together that takes place on October 23rd. Just a sec, please. Processing ... )

It's true, Austin is insane during the *music* portion of SXSW. However, the film and *interactive* portion of SXSW happens a few days before that, and it's bustling, but in a good way. More key, it's crowded with the kind of folks who'd embrace SL-- bloggers, game developers, wikinistas, and other techie hipsters. It's also when cyber legend Bruce Sterling has his famous Net-crowd house parties, and Bruce is a big fan of SL.

Austin or Dallas - Texas is one of hubbys favorite places.
Problem for us is for the next couple of months (until the end of November at least) we are buried with trying to get moved from one house to the other. Once that is done - we plan on spending a lot more time traveling around the local southern area. (I'm so sick of remodeling and working on RL houses I could scream).
We would love to meet other SLer's if you hold a gathering Paris, Florida is not that far away.

I tend to conflate the various portions into one big maelstrom ~ from my Chronstaff perspective, it's a veritable tsunami of information and planning that starts sometime in mid-January (hell, it's *already* begun for 2006) and doesn't stop until the last bass player has schlepped his hungover carcass into whatever airline's vehicle's seat has been reserved for him to get out of Austin with ~ but you are so right. Yeah, during the Interactive phase, SXSW wouldn't be too damned bad to deal with in conjunction with an SLCC kinda thing. And it might, in that case, even be a bit of a boon. BUT DON'T EXPECT TO FIND A PARKING SPACE ANYWHERE! kk

My vote would be Austin, but I would go to Dallas. For any out of state (or out of town) visitors, Austin is a lot better "tourist" destination. Obviously the SL gathering would be the main attraction, but free time does count for something.

But we are discussing a yearly event here right? October 2006 in Austin?

Ah maybe I was confused too Katt. I was voting for VEGAS for the real official 2006 SLCC location. I was saying that if there was an informal MeetUp as I think they are called in Dallas or Austin that would be cool and I would be there as well.

I was about to wonder, in a general sense, why no one started any SL Meetup groups. Then I saw that Pathfinder made one. So, in a general sense, why aren't there more?

From: Paolo Portocarrero Oy, mate! Set up your own meetup, wouldja?! If that were what this thread were about - I'd be happy too As it stands it seems to be about the venue for the next SL convention - for which - I humbly submitted my opinion on what a good venue Las Vegas would be Siggy.

From: Cienna Rand I was about to wonder, in a general sense, why no one started any SL Meetup groups. Then I saw that Pathfinder made one. So, in a general sense, why aren't there more? I had one for Huntsville, AL, but they wanted you to set a monthly date which did not work out. Then I got an email saying the organizer would be charged a monthly fee. I did start a Yahoo! group for the people in the Southern/Southeastern US. SL South is open to anyone. See this thread for details.

Lot to think about there. If you guys decided to go to Vegas, I am soooo there. It's not that expensive either, and there are all-you-can-eat buffets ... and everything Siggy mentioned. So, Vegas gets my A-okay vote.

Perhaps we could use an "RL meetup" forum separate from general. Once announce in the general forum to cull interest, the RL meetup forum could be used for multiple threads of ironing out details. What do ya think?

-Flip
