I didn't ever meet a mentor when I joined SL. I did get a lot of good advice from some people I met early on, one of them taught me how to build for which I will be forever grateful. I love helping new residents and teaching them things. Because of that, I joined the SL Mentors last year. Once I taught a new guy to build, and 3 months later he contacted me back to say he was now making prim hair. That was great.

Both my wife and I joined about two weeks ago and did the usual orientation.

My wife is very outgoing and friendly, she'll speak to anyone. It wasn't long before she was friends with a more experienced person who showed her around. After spending a lot of time in SL, she knows her way around pretty well.

I am more laid back and reserved which carries into my SL life.
We used to IM family and friends from all places across the globe on Micro$oft, but SL is far superior to that so I've been spending almost all my free time preparing a meeting place.

I've leased a 4096 plot, bought or built on the lot and 99% of my help have come from the wiki tutorials. Since my focus have been on building, I lack a lot of the other interface and SL knowledge.

I think the real trick is to be friendly and ask as many people as it takes for help in what you are doing or looking for. Eventually you'll find someone more than willing to help, and perhaps go that extra mile. If people are decidedly unhelpful they have issues with themselves.

At two weeks old my wife is already helping people out, transporting them around, even those who talk a different language - hooking them up with other bi-lingual people she's met.

If you need help and four people "Shoo" you, it's probably the 5th that will be a goldmine of help and knowledge.

Personally, when I first logged in game, I was happy to have a mentor talk to me and guide me thru my first steps in SL.
I think that each new player should benefit from the individual attention of a specific mentor,at least during that person's stay on the newbie island

I agree, Avguste. But, the current 3000 strong group of Mentors is a drop in the bucket compared to the newcomers and, as has been pointed out, there are plenty of other folks willing to help out there. We just need a way to connect them.

Even Jumpman, as an example of what the Lindens are *not* looking for in a mentor :P
