I agree with #1 and #3 at least. There was no mentors/greeters/helpers that I was aware of my first day or two in SL. The instructional HUDs weren't working and I was just a little lost. It wasn't till I TP'd to one of the search's popular places that I found a user that befriended me and she gave me lots of helpful info, took me to money trees and places like the Freebie Warehouse to get some clothes etc... I appreciated her for taking the time.

I appreciated the help I got from regular people inworld. I never had the chance to meet any greeters or mentors, I never saw Orientation Island or even knew what an instructional HUD was! My first login dropped me straight into the fray of normal SL, without even rendering my avatar for me. But I found regular residents were quite helpful and friendly, and in a very short time I knew my way around. Since then I've made it a point to help others whenever they need it.

Jumpman, you don't need to teach the newbies those things, they come pre-programmed for it! Really, though, most of what people need can be found at Yadni's Junkyard, and it's a good LM to have handy. It's also good to keep a LM to the Ivory Tower of Prims, for anyone who wants to know how to make money the old-fashioned way!

now I DID meet a mentor once and i SWEAR this is a true story.
after like a week or 2 in sl i found the LM to the welcome area in my inventory and went back. met this hot lil number who was a helper. whisked me back to her skybox (when i didn't even know what a skybox was lol) and SEE duced me! i swear. every stick of furni in her dump was pose balled up!
and we tried them all. then i made the crappy lil mistake of snappin ONE pic and she freaked! (i was a photog nut in them dayz) never seen her since! true story. she was paranoid but most helpful!

Greeters/Mentors weren't around when I dropped in game a few years ago. There were a few Lindens back then. The Induction was to walk a short path, 'listen' to some parrot telling what cursor keys were used for DOH, like you just walked 3/4 of the route with what? And then onto a 'area' with some weird buildings in looking like a Dysney World in progress. After hanging out there for a few weeks, not seeing the point of the 'game' having come fresh from Worlds.com and There.com, thinking 'Is this all there is?'.

Couple of weeks later was introduced to the mainland. With the prolifercation of 'helpers' and space now made available, I sometimes cringe when ppls complain its not enough. I spent many hours on HI's as a Greeter, but gradually my passion to help newcomers wained due to the Lindens becoming reclusive, so I await to catch newcomers on the mainland where I can focus on quality rather than quantity.

I'm known by my friends for picking up newbies and helping them, they tell me i have the patience of a saint ;-)

I dunno i just enjoy helping people, always have done, prolly always will. I find they are happy just to look better then they are and to become more original rather then the limited choice of avs u get at the beginning.
I give away stuff to them i don't need (if they are girls lol) and take them to freebie places, send them lms for cool stuff.
Now I can voice it makes it easier to explain stuff to the newbies who can hear me wether they can speak back or not :P

I had someone help me on my first day and it really made a difference, even today i helped a newbie and she said after considering deleting SL she has decided to stay :D because she didn't realise all the stuff u could do here !
Plus i got to make a new friend too :-)

Another thing i love to do for avs who have lindens is take them shopping to help them understand skins/shapes/blah blah, and to advise them, hence there are a few great looking guys (well ok biased towards my taste in men;-) wandering around hehe.

I’m pretty much the same way as far as taking a newbie by the hand and showing them a few places to get free things. One thing I like to focus on is their profile. Not so much filling out the “About” section, but rather adding what languages they speak. There have been a few times that I’ve found some multi-lingual newcomer and I always make sure to tell them how appreciated that skill is, here in SL. I also show them how to look at other peoples profiles. It’s usually about an hour’s time from Orientation Island to leaving them at Free Dove or an NCI.
I also keep an alt on one of the non-public Orientation Islands. She helps motivate the newbies by doing the lessons along with them. Lord I’m sick of flying up and down inside that skyscraper. She’s also ARd a grifers there …lol :p
Sadly some of the newbies never return. But a few have remained and I see them regularly popup on my friends list.

Greeters have been disbanded some months ago. Most were accepted into the Mentors group. But unless you are available for US office hours, you are out in the cold. I see no group notices, no posts on the forums from any Lindens taking an interest. I just do my own thing, after all I don't need to be led by the hand or need any tag to make me help anyone.

no greeters for me either

I only got in world because someone on an ebay forum took pity on me and pulled me in world, gave me some lindens and a skin. I have been passing on the favour ever since. I have a little folder of landmarks to hand to newbies so they can make themselves beautiful for free. It is lovely to see them blossom. lol

hi. I maybe new to Sl, well 6days old now, and am already designing tshirts, and moving onto tattoo's my latest one that I am working on is the tattoo from prison break ( OH GOD THATS A PAIN IN THE A**) as well as a dancer in a club. ok well there are some pretty cool people around who have helped me to understand the sl metaverse (rancho. Ken, lizzie, Larz big shout out to you! you guys rock) getting back to track, practically every day, the club I work at, has events practically every night, with the money ball cashing out well over L$10 every 9 minutes as well as contests of L$250 which is held twice a day, If your new to the Sl, and see me in Breezers the club I work at, lemme know if you need help, I'd be glad to help out which ever way I can.

I guess LL realized they don't need any more people to join...

For now, SL mentor's assume that role.

I for one don't help newbies like I use to,first of all,I only speak english! It seems that most newbie are from another country and thinks SL is a war game! I'm not sure if maybe we need a sims for different Countrys,I do enjoy different cultrals, but if I can't help, then I can't!! Plus, what is there for them to do, most clubs have closed and been replaced by yard sales!! Just a opion!!

I am not an official greeter but I have (by default) been turned into one. This is not a plug. I just want to share my experience. We own slgeocaching.com where SL residents can join in on a metaverse cache hunt sport. We have a lot of landowners who host caches and we represent some of the best places in SL.

As such, we have a lot of newbies who use the site to find cool places, meet new people (fellow geocachers) and etc. Through geocaching they have learned how to master their camera controls, how to do basic scripting and many other things...

Myself and my team field SL questions all the time not related to the geocaching sport. But we help them so they can enjoy the sport to its full potential.

Questions like.... How can I look through walls, How did that person find that cache so fast? what is a beacon....what is a group....what is a SIM.....why did my system crash...How do you use the map...

I can confidently say that geocachers probably know how to move around a SIM faster and find just about anything faster then anyone else in SL hehehehe

just thought I would share. thx

I love greeting the newbies. That sense of wonder and being overwhelmed... I remember it well.

I still consider myself a newbie because I haven't mastered all the building and scripting and texturing... but those things take time. It's been a great experience learning and meeting people though...
