Personally,when I first logged in game, I was happy to have a mentor talk to me and guide me thru my first steps in SL.
I think that each new player should benefit from the individual attention of a specific mentor,at least during that person's stay on the newbie island

Personally, I found SL to be somewhat of an enigma for 2003-06. Then I finally joined and well, the biggest obstacle was the UI, and getting things going right. The very first night though, like at 1 am, groggy eyed, I managed to change my appearance a bit by completing the tutorial island thing, then making myself a purple chainmail jacket, hehe.

Then the next day I found the main help area, and was like '... So now what? I know how to move around, chat, fly and use the inventory.'

Then some dude gave me a link to the Shelter, and there I danced goofily to music I forgot about and the rest is history.

But uh, enough about that, the biggest problem and way to help any newbie is to help them explore. I showed my girl friend the inventory the very first thing and from there showed her a bit about building and manipulating 3d objects, and then from there the avatar and clothes, (or lack there of, XP) and then to the world. She is not the most computer literate but she got the hang of everything in about an hour.

i started this thread in one of my more genrous moments. NEVER help noobs. they do ot appreciate it.

Everyone should help a noob. You never know - they could turn out to be really grateful and appreciative later

Sorry to jump into your thread- but can you tell me what a greeter does? (I have it figured out- but didn't know if there was a specific definition for it) If the skills are ones I have allready, what can I do to be a greeter? Thanks for your time!

Hi, Monjolichat. I believe the "Greeter" part of the volunteer program has been discontinued, however the 'Mentor' group is still quite active.

meetin and greeti the same thing.one mentor helped meh with mi graphix card so i thank er, nuther helped meh get off inna skybox (thanx doll), and unnuther is a ol pal (and if she ever gets elevated to Linden you can be like that lil midege and play wow) but the very best way to help noobs is to leave them alone!

4 is a dodgy area. Yes you should be able to defend yourself against the opportunistic griefer, but if said Griefer AR's your poor nooblet most likely the AR monster will issue him with a warning. LL's official standpoint on weapons is that 'you should not retaliate'. Rubbish I know but, well, it happened to me once. -_-

the other day a Linden called it all "spirited mischief". when i asked if they viewed weapons attacks as entertainment ...SILENCE!

Oh no. Lufpleh Obstreperous was a Helpful Greeter and helped me a lot. For an internationally known, worldwide organisation the US people upstairs still seem to think that only north americans count. I've had the same trouble in the SL Christian Community...I'm finally getting heard after WEEKS of polite IM and notecard pestering.

I've noticed that a lot of trouble happens in the camping sims, for example, when the US folk in charge are fast asleep...about 3 or 4AM SLT. Who can be online to stop this? Why we Europeans who are wide awake then! Helloooo!!!
