Count me in (for what remains of my free time, oy!)
I've seen too many good threads go bad and descend into a tedious flame war. A little gentle intervention at the right point in time would help prevent that IMHO.
What Ulrika said. A user-created world needs user participation to make it work. This is a sensible initiative.

As one of the original proponents of slashdot-style resident-run moderation, I guess you leave me no choice but to volunteer *hugs Jeska*

I'd probably like to voulunteer, but I think we need some more details on the program. "Similar to Slashdot" is not exactly much of a description. What powers will resident mods have? What steps will be taken to ensure they remain impartial and that they perform their duties well? How will resident mods be "policed" to make sure they don't abuse their powers?
As much as I don't want to dwell on the negative, the third question is probably the most important. Many forum regulars are VERY opinionated. I'd really like to have enough faith in humanity to believe that everyone would act benevolently, but I find it impossibly hard to believe there aren't those among us who would meddle with the content of posts they disagree with, given half a chance. How will LL prevent this?
Notice I said "prevent", by the way. Discipline after the fact is not enough. Reputations can be destroyed, and people can be hurt all too easily by a renegade moderator on a power trip, and punishing the guilty party would not repair the damage. If that were to happen even once, there would be absolutely no way to regain what we would all have lost. This is a huge risk that could potentially destroy the forums as we know them if not handled exactly right. So, again, what is LL planning to do to prevent abuse, to ensure that it does not happen ever?

I'll volunteer

Possibly against better judgement I'll be willing to give this a shot. However I also agree with Chosen's comment, and would like something more clarifying than 'like shashdot.' Even if you'll start with 'exactly like shashdot' I'm OK with that, since then we all have an actual ruleset to follow. :link:

Sign me up! I have about 5 years of moderator experience on a very popular website for a nationally syndicated radio talk program and would love to be involved in this. Plus -- imagine the fear factor involved!

This is a huge risk that could potentially destroy the forums as we know them if not handled exactly right. So, again, what is LL planning to do to prevent abuse, to ensure that it does not happen ever? I second this sentiment. There are some people who have volounteered here who would be good choices, (and several who would be awfull choices), but power corrupts as they say, and almost every single voice here is very strongly opinionated. They volunteers may not *want* to be biased but they still most certainly *will* be biased. The majority of these volunteers have violated every rule in the book themselves at one point or another. When I rack my brain trying to think of one that hasn't, I come up with Eggy and .... Also, how can a forum run by LL have volunteer (unpaid) moderation? If the forum itself is run by residents, then resident moderation makes sense, but having unpaid volunteers making decisions on policy for a company that is ultimately legally responsible for misuse of that same policy seems a recipe for disaster. What if one of the moderators defames, slanders or otherwise does something to a particular poster? LL is legally responsible I would think. Why would any company want to put themselves into such a legal grey area?

Just to clarify, lest there be any understanding, and re the "zomg personal attack on everyone in the thread!", I was actually referring to the vast majority of the people in the forums, not just the thread. Please don't unnecessarily localise the scope of my attack. Though I don't think it's a personal attack if it's against everyone. Btw, Humans suck. There, now each one of you can report me for that too. Assuming you are in fact human, which is questionable for many here. kthxbye

I shall be VERY interested to see who actually gets chosen for this thankless task. Personally I feel that anyone who wants the job is probably the last person who should be considered...
But what do I know about anything?
