now youre cooking with gas. From: Cristalle Karami So I decided to pay a little more for my classified ad and get closer up toward the middle of the first page in the property rental category of the old classifieds. Since Saturday, I have recorded only 5 teleports and 1 map. I used to get at least three times as much per day.
My visitor counter, however, tells a vastly different story - 64 visitors! I think I'm going to pull the plug on the expensive classified and see if that makes a difference in the visitor count. If it's not a significant difference, I will just have to thank Linden Lab for the opportunity to save some cash.

well, here we are. one week after i posted my last ad, and that ad reportedly gained 13 tp's, 1 map, and 1 profile.
I, however, got approximately 250 visits on my visitor counter at my main rental center.
I am not placing a new high-priced ad this week. I am keeping my nominal 50L ad for those who bother. I will continue to post in the classifieds here every couple of days. We'll see how the visits look in another week.

The number of reported teleports is broken. It's been broken for a while, but it's way undercounting the last few weeks. An ad I run that often has gotten 200-300 teleports received 16 this past week. LL really needs to get this fixed.

Yes, you were.
I still decided to forego the classified this week, to start getting an idea of the numbers that are coming in from search or other methods. I'm at a comfortable point now where I can do it, so why not? Thanks for the inducement for the break, LL.

So, a week later, I am still getting double digit visits from the parcel in Keepdown without the use of a classified ad. I have a 50L ad that goes to my rental center in Vyacheslav. That parcel is getting a little play, although it does get a small handful of hits from that ad. The main rental center in Keepdown is getting about as many hits as I was getting from teleports.
I am intrigued, because it tells me that the new all search is being used pretty heavily.
Here is one oddity I have noticed, though. The Keepdown parcel doesn't show up on page 1 until after I have already browsed forward. I browse to page 2 or page 3 or so, then back to page 1, and there it is. I notice that Acropolis Gardens, which usually takes the #1 spot, then drops out of sight. This is odd. Which is supposed to give the right result?

Paging seems to have stabilized now.
So now almost 2 weeks after yanking the classified, I am still getting double digit hits on the parcel in Keepdown, despite there being no classified ad for it (the nominal classified points to Vyacheslav). I am convinced that it is all in the new search. Now, I do have a longing to use the classified because property rental is an easy category to browse, and I have a new property to show in Chuginadak. But I am simply amazed at how much play Keepdown is getting. The new search must be used pretty heavily.
I feel like I may be throwing 1-2k L down the toilet by putting up a classified.

Classifieds tend to work to an extent
03-14-2008 09:26
I'm new at this forum but wanted to share some of my experience with the group. I operate a furniture store [ IDEA Home Center ], so search keywords are pretty expensive as with clothing and land. If I do a search for my store in the new search all, I am on page seven. This bothers me since I have spent literally thousands of hours creating my goods and marketing my store. Everything SL seems to change on a weekly basis.
Over the past year, I have actually invested different amounts for classified ads, but somewhere between $10,000L per week and $13,000L per week tends to work the best. Last week I completed a major move to a private island and opened my new store.
In hope of attracting some attention to the new space, I invested $51,000L for a classified and my sales were actually less at the new space than they were at the old space which no longer had any classified ads. This leads me to believe that most of my traffic comes from either optimizing my land description, repeat customers, or word of mouth. I will not invest that much money in classifieds ever again.
I probably should not have moved my store. I was doing well at the old location and thrilled that there were always at least 4 or 5 people browsing my stuff. However, I only owned half of the sim and since I love to create new furniture items, I was completely out of prims and was having to delete old items in order to make room for new items. The new location is much larger and has room to grow. So, I am hoping that it was the right choice in the long run.
My opinion is that classifieds are no longer as important as they used to be.

I think it seriously depends on what line of business you are in and what category you're using.
Shopping for clothes, or other appearance items is dreadful. For property rental, that's not the case - it's easy to browse.
I decided to throw a little money back into the classifieds now that the alleged tracking bug has been fixed. My teleports have now doubled, according to my visitor counter. It seems to be somewhat effective. I'm going to play with an even higher number in a few days, to see if it may be worth it. But by and large, there are a lot of people searching for homes using the new search, but I think that that's a frustrating task and classifieds are a quick second resort.
