Poll: would you pay more than 50L for an ad with new search?

Before answering this question, do this exercise: Go to the new Release Candidate and do a search all of classifieds on any subject. Then go to old search for classifieds, and use the same subject. Compare and contrast the results.

Now, seeing how the results come out, would you bother to pay much more than 50L for an ad? If so, how much more?

I might even pull my little 50L$ classified listings as they don't show up in the new search at all. A total waste of money.

Even more confusing since the regular release candidate went "main viewer" yesterday, so you might as well download one that since the regular RC is out of date now.

I have nothing to advertise, so I voted No. Even if i did have something to advertise, I'd still vote No.

As Groucho said in "Horse Feathers"

I don't know what they have to say,
It makes no difference anyway,
Whatever it is, I'm against it.
No matter what it is or who commenced it,
I'm against it.

;)

Doesn't that kind of skew the results Brenda?

If you don't have anything to sell, why even vote?

So, before I vote, what's the status of New Search at this point? Is everything that's supposed to get populated from rezzed objects' "Show in Search" property already complete?

Also, do we take into account the web search yet (which still seems kinda pre-beta), or just the in-world variety?

I'm not sure yet as it depends on how the people inside SL handle the new search. The other categories still exist so does this mean that anyone who is not a newbie will automatically flip to other categories and ignore the first search engine?

I depends on what happens over time I guess so for the time being i'm not changing anything really my ad shows up on the right hand side of the page plus my property listings so meh I will leave it till others start to exploit the thing.

Any search no matter what is done will become a game of sorts so I guess its time to figure out how people are going to manage searches other then new players and then you need to basically conquer the search engine game itself to get on top of the pile.

I also have no idea what keyword spamming does to this engine. Over time spamming period was removed because of all the ways it became exploited and searches mostly rely on traffic and good keywords that are not repeated more then x amount of times. Is sl's engine this sophistocated ? I dont know yet so I guess like others I will be finding out :)

What this new search does is encourage people to spend L$1000/week on 20 ads at L$50/piece, rather than L$1000/week on 1 ad. Numbers are still the name of the game, only in this game, you want more adverts to get a better chance at showing up on the first page, as opposed to a high-paid advert. I hate it. I suppose it's a good excuse to translate my advert into 20 different languages though.

Any hints to being "relevant" under this new system?

Since obviously spending more isnt working?

For example is I sell Pie (i dont)

Do I need an ad that goes like this?

I advertise some of my more popular "models" individually, always did, figured it would help people browzing if they saw a vendor show in the classifieds.

Classifieds are in danger of being meaningless for all but the big players, this was always a concern with the new search function.

Having said that I'd pay L$200 for a classified right now and see what develops.

For the time being no. But then again LL has a habit of "updating" features so I don't know what to think yet. As for windlight, they've been devolping it for almost half a year and it still constantly crashes.

From what I've seen, the new classified system overly counts the repetativeness of words. It will need to be rewritten

Well, I just got a definitive answer from Samuel Linden:

Samuel Linden Says:
November 30th, 2007 at 9:18 AM PST

@ Cristalle - The classified tab and the classified setting in the new Search All are not meant to return the same results. The drop-down setting is meant to return results based on relevance, not simply money paid. The sidebar and the old classified tab will return results sorted by price.

I appreciate the straightforward answer, but I find this to be ill-advised and rather offensive to people who pay for visibility. The sidebar featured ad listing is supposed to take care of that, I suppose, but my search habit is not to merely look at headlines, but get a glimpse of the body. I am a person that can completely ignore the AdSense style of ad. So for me, it is not terribly useful.

Cristalle,

I also think it's pretty unfair for high-paid classified ads to be buried and forgotten when you select "classified" from the dropdown. They seriously need to re-evaluate the claim of what you get for your money, if this is going to be the intended result of a classified ad.

On the other hand, I'm finding that often times the "all" seach is just returning garbage results. I don't find what I want unless I use one of the classic tabs. I would hope that even the most clueless newb is also going to become quickly frustrated and try the other tabs.

The strangest thing is that my ad often appears with the 8 "all stars" on the right, and I'm not sure that's a good thing. To me, it now looks like the type of spam that I would ignore, like the ads that are all over hotmail and the weather page.

So you mean more like-

?

or

pecan pie and blueberry pie and cherry pie and rhubarb pie

I feel you Avion. For our particular line of work, my ad shows up in featured listings a couple of pages deep - which isn't bad, I suppose, if you don't mind clicking more than 4-5 pages. And my ad showed up at about page 5. I felt terrible for you and others who had to go much deeper into the body of the search results to find your ad. I will have to watch the statistics to see if new search makes any impact. I honestly wouldn't mind saving several thousand L a month... but not this way.

I voted no, because whilst someone like Ciaran will make a raise on that and have it be reasonable, some people with assured income have pushed the classifieds up skyrocket high.

When searching for skins my store shows up on page 3, which isn't too shabby. There's no way I'm going to pay enough to show up in the featured ads box so I just reduced what I'm paying for my classified by 90%. We'll see how it goes. Sales haven't been good enough lately to justify what I was spending anyway.

My personal feeling is "not just no but hell no" - but I have to pause, since it really depends on how much this new search tool is used, if at all, for my line of work. I noticed that I got much more looks and tps with the higher paid ad and really started to feel like I was getting my money's worth - but I will have to wait until the new viewer is mandatory and out for a couple of weeks before I decide to cut my budget.

edit: i just retooled my ad again, and put in a line "Apparently I have to spam you with the word apartments just to get on the first page of search!"

Ahh, grins and giggles.

Not going to pay LL for any ad, until they get one that works *chuckles*

The old way was gamed by Traffic and by who could pay the most moeny to ads. This was not always who had the best, or eventhe most, of whatever item searched for, but learning to know what to look for (like avoiding anyplace with over 30k in traffic) helped.

This new way is just a mess, imo. I really do not want to see every single item on the parcel.

I don't have a solution, but this isn't the solution for me.

Classifieds are a rip off anyway.

From my understanding basically a classified just costs L50 now and sorts by "relevance" (i.e. how many times a word is in the ad...but not too many times ?!?) so everyone (in theory) would be listed once unless they bought multiple repeat ads (i.e. spam)?

While I have little faith in LL to make that work well I, personally, as a customer AND a retailer, prefer that to the "pay L$ 1million for anyone to notice you" bullshit that has been going on. I have more contempt for that shit than for campers.

When I'm looking to procure services and go to the classifieds I end up going to about the middle of the results and work my way down the list based on if their ad grabs me or not. I already know the guys with L$ 1million to blow on an ad is going to be too expensive for me to justify working with. I generally try to go for the lower paying guys because I see them as "mom and pop stores". I prefer my L$ to go towards feeding creativity as opposed to egos whenever I have a choice.

And honestly, the last several searches I've done were executed by going to www.slexchange.com, looking for the product I want on there, find either the creator's name in SL or get their shop location and go to see the item in person.

If LL was really paying attention they'd work on making search work more like that.
