Worst of SL? I'd put this thread and ones like it right up there on the list. Imagine you've taken the pluge and bought some land. You've never built anything in 3D before. You don't really know how to texture. But you're having fun mucking about on your own land trying to learn and you've made your first build, or whatever. Yeah, it doesn't look too great, but we all started somewhere, right? The next one will probably be better, but who cares. you're having fun. Then you look on the forum and find some people calling your efforts, unskilled as they may be, the worst thing in SL. How does that make you feel? Still having fun? Probably not.

Linden Maintenance? Roads? It's a joke, I submitted 2 reports that the road surface in Hantu has dissappeared, 6 month later, it's still missing.
I'm Lucky my mainland is probably 20% Linden roads and 50% oldbie residents free land who have probably left the game, not a single 16m plot in my mainland sim, I'm lucky if I ever have other residents in the sim at all. I never realised how bad the rest is untill I went looking with a friend, saw a brickwall 20 stories high fencing the border of a PG & Mature Sim to protect the PG people :/ _____________________

16m ad plots are not too bad if used responsibly. But I think there should be a code - no rotating signs, no multiple identical signs on a group of plots or stacked on top of each other, no advertising of RL goods or services.
I find bad builds annoying - like people who buy a house and stick it on a hillside with one end 10 feet up in the air. I know we can have sky homes etc., but if it's on the ground, at least put some pillars to support it! Another bad building thing which one sees, even in malls, is where a texture has been applied to a whole prim and so you see a squeezed up version of tiles on the edge of a ramp. Perhaps the builder didn't know that you can texture each face of a prim separately. The most depressing place I know in SL is the Matrix. It is usually empty, has dance-trance music playing and is all black with flourescent green grid over floors, walls and roof. It is not a bad build but it actually makes me feel ill going in there. I would describe 10 minutes in the Matrix as 'self-griefing' LOL. |

Darn, I thought I had ALL the ugly freebie houses, but this one doesn't even sound familiar. Send me a pic? Where I'm from, it's the BSD Archer House that's been over-used. It's actually a very nice little house, but it sort of loses its charm when everbody and their dog is using it. Another vote from me is for a people thing rather than a specific location: massive bling. I keep seeing people with bling sparkling about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of their body. It makes me think of a bad science fiction movie where light starts popping out of cracks in a persons body when the alien inside them is emerging. So naturally I quickly run away when I see bling, not wanting to become dinner for the newborn alien. ![]() _____________________

I think I agree with Chip on this one. This thread is among the worst of Second Life. Somebody *made* those freebie houses, and others use them to enhance their enjoyment of Second Life. We may not be all that keen on the landscape of mainland, but it fully embodies the spirit of "Your World, Your Imagination". If you dislike it, you have alternatives. Purchase your own private island and populate it with content which pleases you. Or inhabit an island owned by someone else whose vision you share. Or cancel your Second Life account and go to there.com. I've enjoyed the freedom we've had here in Resident Answers, but I think threads like this cross the line of decency.

For everyone complaining about the destructive nature of ad farms (and I'm one of them), please see the link in my signature below to vote on the Jira request regarding visual muting of items.
Now while I'm not really offended by everyone's hate-on for ALL of mainland, or JUST the new sims, I do protest "teh hate" a bit. I still see some people new areas cropping up (usually where people buy entire sims) that are made beautiful. Moreover, I see the reverse -- I see older land being sold by owners who want a piece of the new continent and pretty much abandoning their land to crap. So the theory that only new land contains ad farms is incorrect. Lucrezia, who co-owns land on three mainland sims and it's all pretty. ![]() _____________________

So...thanks to 'restricted sounds' we can't hear the roar of dinosaurs in the forest next door, or the shriek of someone losing 100 L$ in the casino down the road. We do however have to put up with pink castles, neon lights, sex orgy rooms and 300m high brick walls (Linden walls..upon which we find Linden Highways..on which we CANNOT drive our cars)...right next door!! Think you may have a point there Aleister. I've always said you should be able to restrict visuals to your own parcel if you like. _____________________

The worst? Buying a lot in a sim with about 95% water, adjacent to one of the multi-sim "oceans", with the dream of building your underwater cottage, and going sailing on the vast (for SL) ocean...
And then finding out that the only open-water access to the multi-sim ocean is blocked by a rudely locked-down parcel, which when approached, throws you off your boat and allows the boat to keep on going thru the blockage.. I used to own a large chunk of land (water) in the Vashti sim, and this problem could not have occurred, as most of the parcels there were fronted by Gov Linden protected areas, leading to the adjacent open-water sim.. Guess LL doesn't hold protected common areas any longer.. Gotta sell every sq/m... Tas |

The worst for me is bling, ginormous amazon avatars, horrible shoes, any house with vines on it, shouting objects, automatic notecard givers, prim boobs, and enlarged ermmm coin purses on guys. All that said, I wouldn't change one thing - gives me something to chuckle about to myself plus, everyone has a right to liver their slives without judgement

A positive benefit from the open source
07-15-2007 08:27
Taking a page from Nicholaz Beresford's excellent playbook, I'm releasing a private build of the Second Life viewer with some enhanced functionality to help address visual spam in Second Life. The new features in this viewer are primarily intended to help reduce visual spam in Second Life. The viewer is already able to mute the chat from object or avatars that spam the public chat channel. The Able Edition viewer also allows objects to be muted visually, so that they either appear much less intrusively or disappear altogether.

I love the mainland. It's home. I agree. It is home.... and it has some great places. But well. Guess one is not allowed to say something positive about the mainland. But well, not everyone has the RL dollars to buy a complete isle or wants to take the risk that the person with who you rent land just quits without reason or just drops you because he/she doesn't like you.. Non-Transferable Items
07-19-2007 10:02
For me the worst aspect is the extent of non-transferable items – from homes to clothes to furniture to almost everything. Why I “buy” these items I am not really buying them, they are not assets of mine, since I cannot sell them to a third party. I am only buying the right to use them. So there is a general lack of ownership in 2L, except for land. At least I can sell land that is deeded to me for a profit or loss (I choose not to be on the main land). So this effectively possesses ownership rights.
My inventory has colleted quite a bit of stuff I will never use again and there it sits. Now, I can understand why creators do not have much of an incentive to allow transferability since they want to sell more product. However, if I buy something I wish I had the right to sell it or just give it away to a friend (Not to copy just transfer ownership). I would even pay a premium for this right. Of course I know all this before I purchase an item, so full disclosure is there - its just frustrating that’s all. Regards, DD |

However, if I buy something I wish I had the right to sell it or just give it away to a friend (Not to copy just transfer ownership). Look for non-copy, transferable items then. They are mostly clothing and shapes from what I see. Though I never buy anything non-copy -- To me it's just a cheap trick to get more sell by force people to buy an item multiple time just to get copies. Copy/NoTrans is my preferred. Right and fairs. And you can't expect most developer to sell you Copy/Trans item, that only lead to people reselling their product and terminate THEIRS copyrights. Real developers would lost their sell, and thiefs gain profits. _____________________
