Not that long ago, someone at LL had the bright idea of writing a script to run through the database disabling clearly illegal alts. Unfortunately the criteria used to determining a illegal alts were fatally flawed - not least of all, that a new billing system introduced a month earlier made it impossible to pay for new alts, so quite a few had been created without paying the required fee (even though the person creating them was perfectly willing too). Also the account system didn't allow you to change (or even see) contact related information.

As such this disabled a number of legitimate alts and caused a lot of complaints. Worse it appears the existence of this script wasn't communicated properly within LL, so LL support gave a lot of false information as to why alts were being disabled.

I wonder if someone has had another "clever" idea for a script to detect gambling? e.g.

if
avatar x has just run a script which included a call to llFrand
AND avatar x has just paid avatars, a, b, c some money
then
disable avatars x, a, b, c for further investigation

"Oh, its 5:30pm, lets run this script over the weekend and see what its done on Monday..."

(I'm not entirely serious about this - I hope)

This thread really confuses me. The poster was talking about getting tossed from SL but many of the responders are talking about parrots?

Is this real?!

Earlier today, a friend of mine was working in SL an ongoing project that had reached the point of needing stress testing before going live. She lined up some testers, and offered to pay them $1000L if they would submit a report after their testing. Nothing unusual - the test went fine, and she paid out $1000L to about 15 individuals who turned in their reports. Without any warning while doing this, she was suddenly knocked off line with a message saying her account had been suspended pending investigation for gambling activities. The recipients also had the same thing happen

If i appear slow I am sorry. Can you explain to me how can they suddenly knock this person offline? Meaning were they watching this person? If this is so, this shows you that the lindens with harm anyone they like. If they have done and harm or not. I don`t know all the facts here since i reading it here first. But this is scary stuff..... What i am seeing these days is a world imploding . Because of many factors, but what is worse that are using their powers withouts guidance. I don`t know about you but its not a fun world anymore. if one has to worry about be banned for issues that are so fuzzy as one said here. If i have misunderstood any part of this issue please correct me. But as i read them, big brother as they say is getting more and more stronger.

Not 100% sure. I have asked the person (a very trustworthy chap) who started the thread in Second Citizen to provide confirmation or more information. I will post it here if he does so.

How can such a potentially great thing like Second Life become such a mess?Don't answer that. I don't really want to know.

The part about this I really love is the fact that the so called staff of this company has time to run around SL chasing gambling ghost but can't lift a figure to go after one of the biggest scams to hit SL with the whole Ginko thing.

I am truely stunned... SL is really going down the crap bowl. It's appeal is really starting to wear off on me.

Automated suspensions for paying out money!!!

That is absurd and unfair..if in fact its true.

If this is true why not just remove L$ all together? it would save a lot of people a lot of hassle... :/ Not that i want L$ gone, but if we are going to be banned for spending or getting it it then i see a problem with having it in the first place.

Well, to be fair, the dilemma is probably between common sense and another lonely Friday night in Oakland. Given that choice, I might be a little testy, too. :p

Looks like we need another site just to take care of employee salaries such as this, whether they are one off or reoccurring, a marketplace for wages etc similar to how SLexchange works.

Anyone willing to give it a shot?

I'm willing to invest and help out with my time if some else has the skills required to lead a project like this.

If this is true, then the programmer who wrote teh script (if it's automated) or the Linden that did it manually needs slapped so hard the dead parrot feels it.

There has to be MILLIONS of transactions a day in SL.

Which means there is no possible way a human could track that all (not even if all of LL was doing JUST that one thing).

The possible permutations for reasons for L$ transfers is just as mind-boggling and there is absolutely no way LL could program all the critera needed into a "watchdog" program. If LL is trying this, then they get the "OMG You are stoooooooooooPID!" award.

I'm going with the hope that this is miscommunication on the story. I am going to hold onto the thought that not even LL can be THIS stupid.

From the OP of the SC thread were I first read about this: "I do know that the story is in fact true or I would not have posted it, as I am putting my name on it and it is my credibility on the line too. The person behind it is a well established person here as well, she asked me to publish it for her so as not to interfere with the resolution of it but to make people aware that it happened and could potentially happen to them. I imagine more details of it will emerge on Monday, since again, LL is an 8-5 M-F only operation for all intents and purposes so nothing else has been able to be resolved on the weekend."

If the story turns out to be false, I apologize to the forum. I thought I should post it as a warning. Figured if I helped one account from getting frozen it would be worth it. However, I am hoping that it is actually false because if it's true it spells all kinds of unwanted hassles at a time in SL where there are enough hassles going on. Also, it's just plain irresponsible.

There is one way to know for sure (and I'd do it if I wasn't stuck outworld at RL work)
Make a throwaway alt.
Give it some $L
Go to a welcome area and start throwing money around - use the same figure each time. Say, $10L
See how long before you get banned.

Either way, you're out a few $L, some newbies got some free $L, and we know for sure one way or the other.

Unless the script is set to ban you only if you start paying out above a certain $$ amount. The original story had the amount of L$1000. My alt has never carried that amount around. All he gets to do is log on with no inventory and no balance so I can point at him and laugh at what a newb he looks like.

But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

The story is not false. The person it happened to has identified herself over on SC. This is a reputable individual, by any standards.

Moreover, this is not the first time this has happened to someone.

/me nods. This is assuredly true.

The same thing happened to a large organization I'm a part of, that while legitimate, was still caught in this automated ban. Seems to affect mainly identical large-size "payouts" to multiple avatars. I guess paychecks look like gambling winnings.

This was a really bad idea, LL. Good intentioned, but bad idea.

This is very worrying.

If anyone is still using change-paying vendors, you need to remove them as soon as possible.
