SL without Torley? Say it isn't so!
Torley was one of those rare avatars who became an inworld icon and gained almost mythological status (mytholgical here meaning a larger-than-life cultural figure). Vanishing (to possilby reappear in another form) adds to the phenomenum. Torley will be remembered, and missed. _____________________

I am hoping all of this drama will lead to us being able to get a Linden Bear that has just the slightest hint of watermelon on it. ![]() You know. I'm thinking the same thing. I wouldn't be surprised if a new linden is introduced on monday. Or maybe on the 23th on the 2nd birthday of SL. It almost feels like somesort of puzzle we need te solve. |

I tried quitting once, Torley, and I couldn't do it. It turned out to be a bad idea.
I don't know your reasons for wanting to quit SL, but I do know that what made you an SL superstar will make you want to come back again. Take a break -- maybe a long one -- but come back in the end. You have enough enthusiasm to drown a herd of wildebeest. Share that with your fellow SLers. So however long you're away, take care and be careful with the watermelons. _____________________

<-- sitting here open-mouthed not believing what I am seeing. WTF? I am gone for a few days off the forums and all of a sudden Torley's gone? Did the world's axis tilt and I missed it???
In the immortal words of Darth Vader, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Tongue in cheek humor aside, the community will be lesser without you, Torley! I hope you come back! Cheers! Artillo _____________________

Take care, may your life path be ever winding and full of great adventures. I don't believe you ever really can say good bye to someone, because with how life works you're bound to see them again at some point. So I'll see yah.

Awww.... I'm so sad that my busy RL schedule has kept me pretty much away from SL lately, especially since it means I didn't get to spend more time with Torley. Good luck in your continued adventures, and I hope we see you soon.

Farewell, old friend...
06-19-2005 08:47
I'm still struggling with this concept - a Second Life without Torley Torgeson, in his/her many different incarnations. I suspect that as SL unfolds, I'll be able to deal with that concept better.
Right now, I'm simply too sad for that. I met Torley Sr. on his "day one" - SL's fastest typist, the only person I've ever met so far able to conduct four distinct conversations in public chat, and half a dozen in IMs, not missing a beat. The only person I gently reminded every day at 3 AM that he should go to bed and get some sleep for another glorious day in SL (yes, I was often ignored ![]() Torley is (I still can't deal with the past tense!) the Spirit of Second Life. I don't think that there is a single person in SL (at least over a month old) that hasn't met her/him/it (depending on the current incarnation - one soul so big that managed to handle all those incarnations) somewhere, sometime. Torley has met all of us, has been to all places. Torley found friends and love here - even groupies (see attached photo, featuring Moon Adamant, Eggy Lippmann, and myself, on the age and era of Torley Sr., around mid-October 2004). Whenever someone asks me "what is SL all about?" - I have always two answers. The first is getting into technical stuff. The second is pointing to Torley. People make the world; the world without people is just bits and bytes; a Second Life without Torley is not a Second Life any more. It's an empty shell with wandering ghosts. Torley is, to the best of my knowledge, the only person I met in SL that has never been an outcast. He/she was a member of mafias, cartels, intellectuals, FICs, even organized griefers (I suspect!). None of these groups shunned Torley, or felt he has a "hidden agenda" of sorts. All accepted Torley - since Torley accepted all. There was only sincerity and eagerness in all what Torley did or said - no hidden meanings, no hidden messages, no manipulations. Still, he/she professed his/her ideas, his/her opinions, and what he/she felt that was right. Never, in my experience, has anybody in SL ever contested Torley's rights to express those. Torley embodies the right of expressing yourself freely in SL - by words, by creative self-expression, by images. How many of us can claim the same? SL is about creativity. Torley got in touch with the most creative minds in SL, and challenged them to do neon pink and green stuff just for him/her. Perhaps meant as a joke, or as a fashion statement - I'll never really know! - the truth is, Torley managed to persuade (what a harsh word, when all it takes was his/her polite and happy way of asking!) creative and talented people to become more creative and more talented. Torley has been for many the spark of creativity - the spirit, or even the god/goddess of creativity that assisted them and got them enthusiastic about being creative. Torley is also our own "window to the world". As the joke goes, "God may be at all places at all times, but Torley has already been there". If you need to know what's going on in the troubled and twisted ways of SL - you just need to take a look at Torley's blog. There you'll see what Second Life is really about - from all angles, always described with such pungent and positive words, that you cannot but feel empathic towards them. If you met Torley but once, suddenly your whole view of the universe (even if limited to SL) changed completely. You could not be truly sad if there was a Torley to lighten you up. You could not get too serious if Torley was laughing. You could not dislike someone or something if Torley was gently smiling and seeing all the good that is in each of our hearts. But the reverse was also true. You could get technical, and Torley was there to comment. You could get philosophical, and Torley would follow your train of thought. You could dream about the future, and Torley would dream with you. And, of course, you could tell jokes (even bad ones!) and Torley would laugh with you ![]() As I used to comment, "Torley is just an IM away". Now he/she isn't anymore. Suddenly SL seems empty. I only wish that, as all our hearts and souls have been touched, even if only lightly, by Torley's joi de vivre, that we're worthy of the immense responsability to keep the "Torley spirit" alive. May be rejoice in Torley's memory and learn from his/her experience. Torley, wherever you are - my best wishes. Thanks for existing! _____________________

Oh Torley, I'm going to miss seeing you about the grid!
To me Torley exemplified one of my favorite philosophies for living: "Attitude is everything, so choose a good one." If everyone was a bit more like Torley, the world would be a finer (and funner!) place. _____________________
