I am sure I could be the richest if I put a good chunk of my visa card into SL.. but I decided only a bit and what is worth this game I will put...
The stipends I get are fine and the extras I get for selling my old designs.. that makes me happier than buying friends like many do in this game. Pretending they are it, powerful because of money and no creativity whatsover....
I might be poor but happy is is better than making others miserable with money...
My place might look rich, but all the services I offer in my place are free (a community service) to others to enjoy.. it sure makes me very happy...
Money, Money, Money is not always the right road at the end...

2000$ in a 4% in a savings account - after one month = 2006$ (no work)
2000$ in land sold at 10% profit in one month = 2200$ (work)

2000$ in land sold at 10% profit in one month = 2200$ (work) Well at least they are being honest about the markup now. Over take auctions and add 10% to the selling price to those who would of bought at auction. sweeet

For only a 10% difference, it would be silly for someone who only wants a plot or two of land to bother to learn all the intricacies of the land market.

Agreed, Strangeweather. And it would be silly for that purchaser to take on the extra tier of a larger-than-needed parcel, then try to sell off the excess. And consider the time-consuming administrative chores involved in reselling. That's not a big deal for one plot, but some of us are overbooked on projects, and try to save time by avoiding any unnecessary clerical/secretarial/administrative chores.

From: Pleze Playfair I remember Phillip Linden posting about how land barons were really not making much money off land. It is funny the richest in person is just that. thats because people dont sell for profit here if you could get a sim and sell it all for 512 plots for 1000 a plot you would make 512 us dollars but thats assuming you didnt not order a sim but through careful planning you raised your teir allowcation.and you must sell all your land in the same month or you will take a land fee hits for multiple months for that land but if you order a sim to make a real profit quickley you have to sell 512 for 3000 lindens just so you can keep buying sims. if you pour your own money in to it your going down a dark rabbit hole there you stand to loose money for the first few months. but the key to being a land baron is moving the land quickley if you dont they land fees to maintin it will make it kind of worth less unless you increase the price as time goes along.

Oh thats right we cant do that as some ppl have cornered that market already. Ok it used to be cheaper, much much cheaper.

AFAIK, anyone can still go bid on land if they want. Knock yourself out. Of course, you'd better know a lot about the land market so that you submit a bid at market value (so that others don't outbid you) but not above (so you don't overpay). Personally, I'd rather have a root canal.

Since the term "work" has come up I thought I share some of the things I spend about 100 hours per week on:
o Analyzing economic situation and trends to be able properly evaluate L$ value and value of different types of land
o Scouting land listing in world several times per day for property listed below market value
o Exploring new sims and assessing new land up for auctions
o Watching and bidding on auctions
o Repartitioning land
o Terraforming, reforesting sims
o Adjusting prices on >1000 parcels of land in more than 100 sims whenever there is major market changes or some land won't move
o Answering inquiries from customers who want buy/sell/rent land. Scouting the inventory for land that may suit their needs. Taking them there. Giving advice on land ownership issues, sometimes working out complicated things with them.
o Serving 420 retailers and residents who have rented stores or land from me. I estimate that I am handling about 100-200 inquiries from customers, employees, applicants etc. per day.
o Recruiting, managing and paying staff to run events, clubs and do construction
o Laying out, designing and sometimes constructing markets myself
o Enforcing zoning rules in managed residential sims
o Managing several groups and communities
o Advertising land, new rentals and services on forum, website, radio stations or club events
o Administering forums and website
o Buying/selling L$ via my website for US$, EUR and sometimes GBP
o Listing/unlisting/relisting on GOM
o Dealing with incidents of fraud, libel and attacks on my business
o Dealing with bugs
o Buying/testing content for 10-SPOT stores
o Accounting
o Media, interviews, communication with interested business people
I am sure there is more things that just did not come to my mind. But I generally log on and have 20 IM session at same time while trying to go through one huge mailbox full of requests via my website and stored IMs. It often takes me hours get through those before I can even start continue with my usual work.
Between all this work since many months I don't really have time go to parties or socialize.

I'm sure that - oh, say assasins - think that they work hard also. Hard work, even lucrative work is not its own justification. George Bush talks about working hard a lot too. I even met a guy who was a local sales representative for a well known national pepperoni manufacturer; he said his field was unbelievably competitive.

The amount of time and effort you and your friends put into attempted character assassination on this forum is remarkable Personally I prefer spend my time on work that create value rather than engage in destructive activity though

I stand amazed...

I don't know Anshe from Adam, other than seeing her name on a lot of land I was looking to buy. Oh, and I think she bought maybe one of around thirty pieces of land I sold. I tried the "Land Baron" route on a small scale, and quickly learned the work to profit ratio is not anything to envy. My guess is that a lot of the "wealth" Anshe has is her investment capital, real world money she has poured into the game. I did look at the prices she had to pay (real dollars) at auction, the prices she then sold the land for (in Lindens), figured in the tier costs and GOM fees, and quickly figured out I didn't want to take her job away from her. Or even try to duplicate it on a small scale.
I am sure she has profited (God, I hope so) for the ungodly amount of time she must put into all this. So what???? It is a big world. Lots of land being sold by others. If you don't like her, don't buy from her. Personally, to me, she appears to be doing business within the rules, and seems as trustworthy as anyone else in the game. Heck, she has to be. Real violation of the rules would cost her a bundle.
Okay, that is my rant. Nothing to see here. Move along.

100 hours a week? Dont you have a kid and a family? Spending 100 hours a week on SL seems grossly irresponsible for your RL.

I know CEO's of Billion dollar companies that aren't spending 100 hours a week working.
14 hours a day 7 days a week is excessive and could be viewed as an addiction. If I spent that much time working or on a game my friends would perform an intervention. I work long hours at work, but 100 a week every week? I am hoping there was some exaggeration there.
