do not argue with me on this. i am 100% right. you are 100% wrong. mentors and instructors have nothing to do with your crusade against the alleged fetid hedonistic inner core.

Hehehe. My, my we're stubborn LOL. I'm afraid some mentors and instructors overlap with the feted (note FETED not FETID) inner core -- and the word "hedonistic" is used to rather ineptly describe that me-first sense of entitlement and eminent domain that some have, not implications about their mindless av sex LOL.

You're saying they sacrifice, earn chump change, and these selfless types are engaged in a permanent wiki, for the Good of SL, and again, we all must genuflect at Their Great Sacrifice and Benevolence. I say: baloney. I constantly check the event schedule. I hardly EVER see any of these events (maybe we'll see more). I remember the last few days hunting for a scripting class and not finding any in the evening when I could go. If anything, I remember seeing more of them back in the fall when I began, but lately it has been a total clutter of sexay av contests. In fact, as soon as the site is back up I will count how many of these educational events actually took place before the current change!

Let them charge money. I will pay it. This could be like a RL economy. Stop the feting, already.

Oh, im sorry about those Sexy AV Contests I won then, damn; my Skin Designer's Product isn't worth while nor his Talent appreciated, and those Sexy Clothes I wear; didn't help either whoever designed those Chaps. I guess they didn't really contribute after all. I'll have to stop buying them.

Song Hit a Chord with Me
02-03-2005 22:10
I dunno. This song hit a chord with me. So many people have said in this thread that this would let the creative and strong minded flourish while the naked avie contests would go away. Well? Check out the events schedule lately? The naked avie contests thrive (because they are about dwell and nothing else) and the rest? flagging. Folks say that people will still be paid to host: as far as I can tell only clubs that make rl and big money from dwell are paying anyone to host. Those business representatives who said they would give prizes or jobs to events hosts? as far as I can tell, aside from one real estate diva, no one else came through and I sent out probably 25 IMS to people I saw volunteering support in forums. One responded positively. We lack a box office script, again something I have posted about numerous places. The way this impacts me (and I have tried several approaches) is that I am now asked to host for free or for tips. I have made the decision to quit hosting events at the club I love. I can't afford to do it for love alone unless I do it a lot less frequently. I will begin hosting less arduous events at the spa where I get paid from dwell. Otherwise, I work for 6 hours for a quality event and am renumerated as much as $100 (of which, last time, I gave away $80 in prize money to 4 writers, leaving me with $20). That is, unless I strongarm people into buying programs which only works if I have a volunteer or paid assistant to pass them out as I organize the other aspects of the event. It simply doesn't work. Who this hurt, just as prokofy said, were the new, creative players who want to do something other than gambling or struggling to learn to script or build. I will still make the kinds of events I want to go to, but, honestly, instead of twice to three times a week, it might well become more like once per month. *shrugs* might start teaching a couple of classes. I do that for a day job though, so it would be fun to do something else to make my VL bread.

The anticipated new horizon of nothing but interesting and challenging events is a pipe dream. The better stronger dollar means I will have to pay more money when I buy my Lindens, which I have already had to do once since the change. Great for Damian but not so great for me. I have not received a single rate since the new system went into effect, though I try very hard to be a kind, generous person in game (though people not rating me for building I always understood with a smile). As far as I can tell, it truly is a decision that only influences those very few at the top in any way other than negatively.

Anyway, summarily dismissing someone's thought as being empty just because one has seen it before or one doesn't agree with it is a logical fallacy. ty for posting prokofy.

Did it work?
02-03-2005 22:31
Ok...um... if it is just that we will now have this new system and still get paid, why am i now no longer paid to host? Did the bikini contests go away? Do middle managers who don't own the land (i.e. events hosts) benefitting from dwell? Do the owners, who benefit from dwell, now pass that benefit onto the managers when it costs several times more to employ hosts than they recoup from dwell?

Yep. I'll still do some events because I love writing or acting or playing. Likely, people who script and build do that in part because they love it too. They give away a little tiny piece of their work sometimes, too. Likewise, I will give away a little tiny piece of my work from time to time. But honestly, all the great stuff that was supposed to happen after the change... did it? no. Did all the negative stuff happen? not quite: we do still have some events, but there are far fewer and less variety in those remaining. But one indisputable fact remains: what I used to be able to do and be paid by my club owner, I can now do all right, but might only get a drop in the bucket for renumeration after all is said and done unless I am willing to harass people for money. (Having people pay to attend the event only pays owners, not me. And they may or may not choose to renumerate me, depending only on whim.) So it hasn't affected me positively in any single way I can name. How about you? likin' those bikini contests? Find any vendors who actually lowered prices? (Has yet to meet one.)

From: Zuzi Martinez
except for dwell.

and fun.

seems like there's a swath of SL that thinks no one bothers to log in unless they're guaranteed to be launched into a lake full of money. there are plenty of motivations other than money and money hasn't been removed as a motivation for events anyway. it's just set up a lil bit different now.

all these changes are pretty dang minor really. prolly just going to result in:
1. not having 20 wet t-shirt contests per day anymore.
2. the bonus you get on top of your stipend (which most people say is tiny and insignificant right now) will get a lil bit tinier and insignificanter. whoop.
3. value of the L$ goes up so prices go down so people have as much or more buying power as before.

so less spam and less free money that you weren't even entitled to in the first place. verily the world endeth.

from what little i know about the 1.2 changes this stuff sounds like 1% as major as that was. were people swallowing their tongues and spontaneously combusting over 1.2 or is this new? seems like the forums have gotten rantier even since i joined in september.

insert smilies where necessary.

I'm all for removing socialism and giving incentive to make better events...

If LL's "financial crutch" removal does away with "socialism" in SL, then there was something wrong to begin with. The last I knew, I socialized to socialize, not for the Linden buck.

The overall motivation of the SL community (before the removal of the "financial crutch";) was steering away from THIS:

Your World. Your Imagination. ™

...and aiming for THIS:

L$$$

I see nothing but LL steering SL BACK in the RIGHT direction.

Agreed, Nexus. 100%.

Time is worth money, I couldn't agree more!
02-10-2005 17:25
Maybe it is worth posting an event, and charging at the door in addition to the $500 one can recoup from Linden. Easy Peasy! Just do as Events Hosts are counselled to and charge each class attendee $L at the door... Oh, but then the Linden subsidy might be pulled. But that's Ok. Still no prob: just charge a little MORE at the door like the events hosts are told to! Oh, don't own the land you are hosting on? hmm. Well that IS a bother. OK, do this. Still no problem. Convince the owner of the land upon which you are holding an instructional course that he or she should take the events money paid by participants to him or her and then cut you a check (no doubt he or she will pass along every $L paid by the attendees) and Voila! you are paid for your services! Oh, you say the place you are hosting the event is owned by multiple people? Oh! then you're exactly in the same boat as most event hosts! Good Luck!! :-D You will have to teach your class at the same time as trying to convince the people who attend your class that they should voluntarily pay you on the honour system. You will have to repeat this message and be distracted from your task with the constant reminder to new folks that they need to give you $L and that it is only fair. You will have to be willing to kick people off the land who didn't pay (Oh wait!!! I forgot, it isn't your land so you can't possibly kick people off.) Scratch that last thing. You will instead have to simultaneously beg for money, teach the class, And hail one of the many owners and get him or her to come help you kick people off for not paying OR.... o heck with it. give up while you're ahead. Too bad too. Might have been a great class.

I like the idea of educational events, but who decides what is and what isn't educational?
No one's answered that one satisfactorally yet...

Actually, the Lindens decide and they listed exactly what qualifies as educational when they first posted about the changes.
