Is the end of stipends nearing ?

Signs that they will soon become a target for reduction or outright elimination are everywhere. The increasingly heated debates on these forums from both the pro-stipend and anti-stipend camps, and the recent drastic and rapid devaluation of the linden, are perhaps the clearest indications that our stipends are indeed in jeopardy. IMHO, the question is more along the lines of how much they will be reduced, or when they will be eliminated, than that of if they will be reduced or eliminated.

From: SecondLife Community: Newsletter
Now, nearly three years later, event support, ratings bonuses and (soon) traffic awards have been eliminated. Second Life is a thriving and exciting community approaching 200,000 Residents, each one with the potential to add value to the culture. We think reducing and ultimately eliminating all subsidies will mean good things for the Second Life economy and for the overall culture. Consider the possibilities when:

* People are willing to pay to support quality entertainment or donate an admission fee to underwrite valuable non-profit activities such as museums

* Businesses attract new customers with low-cost items (check out the L$1 items in the GNUbie store instead of freebies)

* Clubs hold live events and charge a cover fee

* Businesses sponsor concerts, exhibits and other projects in return for some level of acknowledgment (think national public television underwriting)

Change is hard; especially change that impacts people’s finances. But we believe that a community that supports itself through innovation and cooperation is bound to be stronger in the long run.

Good luck to all and may the powers that be have mercy on us.

END STIPENDS NOW!!

Defeat Communism in SL just as it was defeated in Eastern Europe. The (virtual) world works better with a Capitalistic economy.

People won't go to anything if they have to pay. They might freely tip L$100 but won't pay L$25 to go in.

It's the capitalists that are killing SL, and the sooner we run them out o' town, the better.

If stipends are eliminated, I shall eliminate my premium account.

What you mean is, Lewis Nerd will not go to anything if he has to pay. I've had to explain this to another poster recently, and will explain it again. In short, the world does not revolve around Lewis Nerd! :) Nobody has elected you president, and thus you should not presume to speak for "the people".

Pity. And when the free account entitlement is removed also, you will have to leave entirely. I'm sure you'll be missed by many. Someone should start a Second Life obituary service, for all of the av's who leave because nobody will give them free money anymore. :)

I totally agree with you, Shaun. Tis a pity that people such as you are ruining SL for the rest of us.

No, I am not getting "free money" I am paying for my stipend via my premium account. And I buy the $L I need on the exchange, as I make more than enough in RL to support my SL. Unlike you, I do not see SL as a get rich quick scheme to become RL millioniare, rather a means to explore an alternate world.

And I'm not going anywhere. I'm very happily ensconced in Neualtenburg, a land cooperative. Though I'm sure you won't be here much longer, when the sky falls down on the land baron's heads.

I never claimed to be president - however a lot of people do share my thoughts and views on such matters of the economy. Generally, those who actually play SL for fun rather than profit, and thankfully there are more of us than there are of you.

Because you have no concept of money when you make statements
like this:

"No, I am not getting "free money" I am paying for my stipend via my premium account."

Because any 2nd grader can tell you, that to "PAY" for your stipends
would mean that LL is taking a portion of your yearly fee and buying
those stipends directly off the LindenX..

But what they are doing is charging you $72/yr for the privilege
of receiving a free batch of L$500 every week off the printing press...
And this very act is what is pushing down the linden dollar, because of
all the newly printed money being poured into SL every week...

Which part did you not understand? Or should I explain it to you
in less detail until we reach the grade level in which you are able to comprehend?

I'm here for the long haul. Sorry to disapoint you, but I'm here to build a world, possibly including some games for gamers once the platform matures a bit more. :)

Also, the end of stipends will not cause the sky to fall.

I repeat my statement. "I am not getting free money."

The problem is "businessmen" such as yourself, who feel feel the need to fund their RL off of SL.

Get a real job and stop exploiting my game/platform.

Stipends should end... Then if the ecomony begins to suffer
from a lack of liquidity, then LL can reintroduce stipends until
the problem passes...

But this constant printing Linden Dollar money machine will
kill this economy. Nearly L$50,000,000/million new linden dollars
a month. We'll be over a Billion in Float by Year's end..

Listen up n00b... The world spins on money.. If people aren't
making money in SL, they aren't buying land to expand and operate
businesses (tshirts, skins, rentals, etc). When that happens, LL isn't
making any money off tier fees. And without any money in the LL
coffers, SL's game/platform you love so much will have a big
"Going Out of Business" sign on it once the Investment Dollars
dry up...

This isn't Germany where you can mooch azz backwards off the
government.. Around here, you gotta bust azz to make a dollar.

Your sig tells it all.

And the fact that you agree with everything Lewis says tells a lot about him and his supporters.

And if stipends are ended, where is it you expect people will get the money to buy tshirts skins and rentals? I'm not understanding your position here.

You may want to bust ass to make a dollar in SL but I come into world to have fun -- not to work. I have a job already. A lot of that fun is shopping and if my stipends are stopped, hell I'll just be in world less. How does this help you?

I don't have a sig! At least I don't think I do. But yes, clearly I agree with everything Lewis says - he hates freedom and so do I. It's great, you should try it.
