From: Jamie Bergman No, LL needs to eliminate the free lunch that it is giving out. Why not eliminate ALL stipends, as this is merely welfare. A strong society needs no welfare, as the market will self-correct. We need to get back towards a purer free market in SL and end SL socialism once and for all!! The stipend is welfare? LOL. I PAY for my stipend. Welfare is when others pay for you. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it socialist. And SL isn't a market economy, free or otherwise. No stock market means no market economy. And since you can't have enforceable contracts in SL, and LL has made it clear that it's going to stay that way, we won't ever have a real market economy in SL. SL is a game for some, and for others it's a way to make money. If you can't make money under the current structure too bad. Having the government (LL) take my money to prop up the value of yours doesn't sound like capitalism to me. There is a simple way to end the increase of available $L without taking any resident's stipend or implementing new taxes. Allow residents to pay their land tier fees in $L.

From: Jamie Bergman Yes, and those people can use RL money to by L$. That is the power of the free market, my friend. Doesn't power of the free market extend to the other hand too? People to set their own prices for selling the L$? Or does the 'free market' only work when it's in your favor? I'd really like to know. Freebies = good when you profit from them - Freebies = bad when you don't L$ worth lots = whoohoo wild west baby! Free Market ROCKS! L$ worth litte = REGULATION! OMGZ! SKY OWIES BUMPED MY HEAD! Stipend = Good when you get it Stipend = Bad when you don't need it? I hope the L$ does go through the floor - I'll suffer the loss just for the laugh of watching you implode. Oh and to answer your other question about anchors and all that jazz - simple answer: Never.

From: Introvert Petunia I'll rent you the brick for only L$100,000/hour. Yes, I know that sounds expensive but what with the hyper-inflation and looming recession and all.... Was that a Freebie brick?

On a serious note, isn't this a subtle attempt at currency manipulation? I think most folks who have been around a while take statements along this line with a grain of salt. However, SL is a world where, new residents perpetually make up a good percentage of the population. Could this FUD tactic actually be useful in manipulating the market to gain a trade advantage - if many of the traders are new residents? I don't think there are any TOS/CS rules against psychological manipulation of the currency market. But if that's what is really being attempted, how far could an individual go with it before its a problem that needs to be addressed? Just thinking out loud here

I especially like this quote: From: Jamie Bergman's Blog I am SecondLife's leading economic mind. Yet you can't tell a market economy from a non-market economy. A legend in your own mind.

From: Siggy Romulus I hope it goes lower than that - just to see who's head explodes first! I agree! "The Economy? You can't HANDLE the economy!!!" Ooh, this is all such entertainment is it not?

So... if the current rate has been the same for a few days (actually its a tad BETTER yesterday and today) - where is this "crisis"
Or.... perhaps the 'crisis' is that the 'sky high' days are coming to an end..
For shits and giggles - go look up 'linden dollars' on ebay -- you'll see what I mean.
