This will be my first time ever posting to any of the boards here and prlly my last time as well..

My whole problem is that I do not belive in any 3rd part that sells any in game item for real life cash, be it USD for Lindens, Gold, Items Etc...i feel it makes the game cheap.

The game is bugged and as far as Im concerned we are all paying to play in an on going beta test.

Yes. I did play Alpha and Beta of this game, and yes it has come a loooong way, but it still has a long way to go...and no Im not a lifer...as a matter of fact I just recently upgraded my account to a premium one so that I could own land for a club.

Is there anything wrong with "clubbers" as some one labeled us? No. Rating fest, Hell yes, couse it was the only way people that could only afford the 9.99 lifetime account could make any bonus money.

I make my own shirts i dont sell them couse they are crap. So I make no extra money from them.

Dont give us tools to make money such as rating people and not expect us to use it as much as possible.

I dont favor this turn of events...couse this in all Reality is just a game. If I wanted to play economics games I would not come here to do it.

Were talking about Currency that dont exist. Plain and Simple. I know what we need...a war..war is always good for the economy :P

Do I even know what the hell I am talking about? Beats me...just my opinion....

Yes - I will have to greatly reduce the land I rent as it is paid for out of my stipend.

I will have to reduce the number places I sell clothes at - perhaps to just slexchange as I design for pleasure not business.

If I get any money in the future it will not be working for myself - it will be working for Anshe or someone as they will have access to the rl money to employ people.

Someone seems to have decided that my Second Life should take places in Bush's America. I'm very happy living in Europe in my first life and have no desire to be second class in my second.

For all those who say - make stuff, buy! sell! play at being little republicans! I say the following-

Most people use SL as an entertainment medium. Some create stuff - and some of those who create stuff make money from it - most clothing designers do not. Most of us create for pleasure and to learn.

I predict the following effects:

Reduction in the number of private islands as people buy them to host events and there aren't going to be 25% of the events there are now.

Greater inequality, especially for basics and those on low income in rl.

The growth of a "capitalist class" and a greater consolidation of wealth.

A loss of freedom as people will not be able to rent their spot of land out of their stipend. People will not be able to make money hosting events and would be expected to work for others to make money.

I really, strongly oppose this change. This will cut down a lot of the fun for me.

Just want to point that when Phil L. says -

"+ A 50% reduction in the bonus amounts paid out as weekly 'Stipend Ratings "

THis does not mean Stipends will be cut in half - rather that only the bonus portion of Stipends will be cut in half.

Look carefully tomorrow at your Stipend and how it is calculated - this may not be as much money as first thought.

:)

The bonus portion is as much as L$750 a week for the top people. So the big clubbers can lose half that plus the loss of event related income.

To clarify, it is L$750 for total rating, and L$750 for rating increase - for a total bonus of L$1500. This means the top socializers will be going from L$2000 to L$1250 for premium account holders, and from L$1550 to L$800 for basic account holders.

The thing is, that "ratings per week" will drop off significantly because of the increased price of rating someone. So the amount that you get from your current ratings will be less... and you will get less from your increase in ratings over the week...

And new users who don't have any rates at all, well too bad for them.

Chip's Idea...
01-10-2005 23:00
Chip -

You post an interesting "progressive tax" idea, by limiting stipends of "rich" players who carry a large balance. But I'm going to poke a few holes in it - because playing the Devil's Advocate is an important part of bringing any good idea to maturity... Please don't take it personally!

1) People can get around this tax by buying lots of goods, then re-selling them out of their inventory. I guess you could get around this by tracking their INCOME rather than their balance... But I do know of a few scripts (gambling, bingo servers, etc) that temporarily deposit the "jackpot" into someone's account, during the game. This would have to be changed, for obvious reasons.

2) LL is *NOT* going to want to make life too easy on the Basic Account Holders. Why, you ask? For one very very simple reason: Bandwidth costs. It costs LL real honest-to-god US Dollars (and a fair number of them!) to serve out the content every time an object or piece of terrain is displayed on your client. They HAVE to make that money back somehow, if they want to be profitable. This means making up for the net loss of money from "Basic" users via the profits on "Premium" accounts. So they're going to want to encourage people to upgrade. If life is easy for Basic account-holders, there's no incentive to upgrade. I'm not demonizing LL, these are just the facts of life! Their investors are GOING to want to see a profit at some point! So I would expect that LL's long term goal will to make life fun for the Basic account-holders, but not give them enough economic power to become serious land-holders, buy a massive inventory of goods, etc. Those are things that interested and dedicated players should be willing/encouraged to pay for.

Like the rationale, though!

Take care,

Please correct me if I misunderstand here. One odd consequence of this ratings change is it may take less ratings for the same stipend. Lets suppose overall in the world there are 1/10 the ratings given as now. And I manage to get 1/5 the ratings in a week I get now. The pool is half as big so that would make me come out even, yes? I don't care about ratings, just pondering.

Dwell / traffic is pooled, as you describe, but ratings, as I understand, are based on your raw ratings, not pooled.

As in, maintaining the two-week average price? Because that's what it's doing. It went down, then up, and it's back at $3.88/$1000L

Please stop spreading your filthy lies.

Tread, good points. I knew there had to be some holes in there somewhere. $9.95 lifetime accounts are amazingly generous as it is, so it's definitely vital to get people used to the idea of paying ala carte so that LL isn't subsidizing everything and the L$ maintains a reasonable exchange rate. There needs to be that incentive for hardcore content development that keeps pushing the envelope more and more, which in turn keeps new people coming in. It all makes me glad that I'm an artist and not an economist :)

Bye bye land rentals...hello typical rich get richer, poor get poorer scenerio. Trying to make a GAME too much rl is bad..this is gonna hurt SL me thinks..I know I can't afford my land rental anymore considering it went 100L a week..no way I can afford it now. Time to start playing WoW instead maybe?

Does WoW have a monthly fee? For $8 a month you can buy L$2000 from GOM, or, better yet, you can buy a year subscription to SL for $72 and be guaranteed $2000 a month, plus own 512sm of land that you will be allowed to buy for only L$512.

And moving higher every minute... Folks are loading up on L$ cause it doesn't take a rocket scientist (well maybe in this game) to realize that a reduction in the currency float will cause the valution to rise. And those who pony up with L$ now will reap the rewards shortly down the road.
