Tuesday is Welfare Check Day... Boy O Boy, I can't wait to collect my L$500 so I can dump it on the LindenX like everybody else on my favorite day of the week, PayDay Tuesday.
What are the Casino Odds on the LindenX closing out Tuesday at L$280? Welfare Day is always a great selling day for Linden Dollars.
Best buying rate: L$278 / US$1.00 Last trade: L$278 / US$1.00 Last close: L$277 / US$1.00 Change: +L$1 / US$1.00 Today's volume: L$3,300,254 Today's open: L$277 / US$1.00 Today's high: L$300 / US$1.00 Today's low: L$277 / US$1.00 Today's average: L$278.02 / US$1.00

Study or speculation?
If the former I'd like to see the data.

There is no welfare on SL.
Wonder how much backlash 'cut all dwell' would get?

You mean because of all the residents receiving their fat check and cashing out the 1,72 US$ trying to become filthy rich?

ReserveBank, you keep saying that the $L500 stipend is "welfare." Why? If you have such a problem with receiving "welfare," why aren't you giving it back to the Lindens?

Rushing to the Lindex on Tuesday to dump your $L500? That's just laughable. More like rushing to buy yourself new prim hair, new poseballs etc. Get real.

To sell 500L on the Lindex is not worth your time. For one it comes out to $1.72. Then to make a transfer subtract a dollar from that which will leave you 72 cents.
More speculation and no data once again.
More realistically looking at the data it could close out tomorrow at 280, but looking at the real data averaging 276, 277 past week it likely won't. Currently the the value is at 277 not counting the small batch at 278. It could even close out tomorrow at 276 or 275, who knows. If it did close out at 280, it would be due to a very small order and not due to Stipends.
I was actually suprised how steady the Lindex was today compared to some other Monday's.

so wheres this data your talking about? The tumbleweed blows through. All you can hear is the sound of the wind. ReserveBank has again been vanquished by the deft use of data. If ReserveBank fails to cry "The Linden is Falling" does that mean 6 more weeks of winter?

From: Shaun Altman What do you think the prim hair and poseball vendors then do with that L$? LOL yes... there's probably a rush on Wednesday... but the OP wasnt saying 'the stipend is bad because people spend all their money on Tuesdays therefore content creators are cashing out subsequently". Rather it seemed to suggest that people are taking their measly $L500 and cashing out. My point was, if you are relying on your stipend as your primary income, it probably doesn't make it as far as the Lindex... at least not from you.

There was a time back in the mists of GOM when the world was a lot smaller.. and it was possible to see - say Chip Midnight put out a new skin, or Neph put out an outfit, or see a land auction go off and watch GOM and see some kind of effect. Now though the world is too big with too many 'big players' and 'events' to say 'tomorrow x will happen and Lindex with be at y.y amount' The reasoning is there - you can see how it makes sense - but without even any data to back up the claims (let alone contrary data you can view at the touch of a button) - ANY post that says 'singular event x' will blow the economy is simply someone trying to drum up panic. Hell - I don't even think the L$ has settled on how much it wants to be worth yet. And the 'it's worth 250!' is a random figure pulled out of the air too... All you can be sure of is that it won't sink BELOW what the other exchanges buy amount is for too long

I don't agree with most of the OP's theories and suggestions either, but I do think his/her heart is in the right place. I'm just saying that a lot of this freshly printed L$ -does- get to the currency market in fairly short order.

I would like nothing more than the value of the $L to go up. I sell them, I don't buy them (anymore). And I can see that removing stipends could increase it's value. But I can't help wonder what kind of SL we would have left. We might be cutting off our nose to spite our face. Sure, we'd get more for our $Ls. But maybe, without those people spending their stipends, we might have less to sell. A lot of new people find SL difficult. You really have to be skilled at something to make money, and there's only a few types of skills that are in demand. Many people that do well probably brought RL skills with them. Amongst other things, I spent three years at art school... to me building is just drawing in a different medium. I can only imagine how daunting it must be though to someone who's never used the likes of Photoshop, Illustrator, Maya etc. Even if you come into SL already skilled, it takes a while to get to know SL, how it functions, and what is and isn't possible. Without the stipend, many might give up before they ever reach that point. And without the stipend, how attractive would premium be to many people? Not everyone is graphically talented, or has scripting experience etc. Without the people who come to SL just for fun, rely on their stipend to get by etc... SL might be pretty dull. We may be left with a handful of talented, driven people, but not much else.

You seem to completely miss the boat when it comes to the definition of Welfare. There is no one in Second Life who is totally living off the weekly stipends they get on each Tuesday. It helps me buy the things I want, but at the same time, I just checked my account and I have purchased over $500.00 USD on my credit card since I started in this "Game" in September. If you do not like the $500.00 stipends you get then pass them on to me. You comments are getting very tiring......
