As open source application, SL could be a Gatekeeper rather than a full service provider. Let people set up their own island(s) on their own server(s), billing their own services to their users, where Linden provides the Gatekeeper services to the asset servers and the connection to the Main Grid. Prices would remain the same for the services provided by Linden but maintenance would limit itself to a focus on software deliverables and connectivity services.

This was a very popular discussion about a year ago. There were some strong arguments on both sides of the fence. hmmm, lemme see if I can locate one of those threads.

Those were just a few but I am certain there are more. It's hard to search being that the title of topic doesn't always tell us exactly what the thread is about. But there are Some Linden Q&A in there as well which may help you see where this topic has been already.

It would be nice to have this option to run a sim on our own servers. Perhaps in the future!

I find it really interesting how the diagram at the bottom is labeled "Second Life Grid 2008." Anyway, clearly Joe's Garage is in the picture!
