What I think they mean by no green dots is that people should be unable to link a green dot to your name. You'll still show up on a map, just nobody can figure out which green dot is who so they can't map you and then TP to you.

Well...I personally think Mapping should be done away with entirely. I get a bit sick and tired of people dropping in unannounced, even if it's my friends. ASK if I want company, then come.

That aside, why shouldn't I have the right for my friends to see me as online or offline if I want? Those of you that hate it, that's your perogitive (ungh, can't spell) but you have no right over what I do while in game. Heaven forbid I want some alone time but someone I know seems to think otherwise. With invis, I can go invisible and have my alone time to shop, or build, or just veg and not be interupted (unless I just so happen to get caught). The avi itself wouldn't be invis, if a friend HAPPENED to be in the same place as me I'd be busted, but I wouldn't show up on my friends lists as online. That would be fine. You could still IM and blah blah blah, the only thing that would change is that you would have the choice to be viewed as online or not on your friends lists. That's all. Why would the ability to have some alone time be such a horrible thing?

I agree. I can't count the number of times I'd like to just sit down and build with no interruptions, maybe one or two of my builder friends present (as I'd still be able to TP them!)

votes spread thin

It appears that there are lots of votes out there for this idea, but not enough on this one proposal to get acknowledgement. Gosh, how I wish we could get proposals consolidated.

If we could, there would be 1,642 votes (as of 9:10 PM Pacific Time).

I can get into people wanting to have privacy and sometimes are utterly anoyed by others.. but see this ending up in the biggest privacy intrusion ever. you wont even know if theres someone near you that just went invisible to spy or whatever.
unless lindens have some sort of way of still making me know that theres someone next to me even tho theyre not on the map or rendered via my viewport, the best option for real privacy becomes blocking EVERYONE you dont know from your land. which just ends up ruining meeting people and exploring in general.

didn read all of the other posts on this thread, and im sure this has been said well over a hundred times in here but hell, this issue cant be pressed enough.

an idea tho: invisibility only available on land you [group]own.

Even then...STILL no real privacy. All one has to do is manipulate the ctrl/alt keys and zoom into all parts of someones land even not being actually on it.

Wait a second, ppl could use a device already to make them invisible....if you take away thier green dot on the map they become almost completly untracable...

add this together with rumours i've heard of weapons that are untracable and break other protection protcols and you have no protection from griefers....ick...

Bad Idea...

another thought here....I get IMs sometimes when i dont want to, I just ignore them or give the person a short explqaination as to why i dont have time to chat right now...

So this proposal makes little sense to me, on all of its points...

whatever happens dont let ppl take thier green dot off the maps....really bad idea...

and lastlya quik note on privacy and spying...ppl CAN camera spy on you without being physicly near you, this proposal does little or nothing to change that...and I understand if this bothers you- but you can just do what i do...assume ppl are spying by default and make sure to give them a good show....lol

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! That's not what "invisible" and "get rid of mapping" means!

Invisible: Appear as OFFLINE in search and friend lists. NOT THE AVATAR!
No Mapping: get rid of the "Show on Map" feature. NOT THE DOTS!

getting rid of the ability to map ppl sounds good...I hate it when ppl just "drop in" with no warning...

appearing offline to ppl is cool too i guess, but I myself would never use it...as i mentioned b4 i just explain to ppl that I'm busy, or just kinda ignore them...

this thread is pretty old...I wonder whatever happened with this whole idea...

ummm...i just checked...the votes for "invisibility" as originaly proposed in prop 52 are over 1000....and the lindens are looking into it...for private sims if nothin else....

but it also sounds like the idea of taking youre green dot off the maps might stick too...

BIG MISTAKE!!!

Enter a new era for the griefers...."THE INVISIBLE WARS"

WE AREN'T GETTING RID OF DOTS!
We are getting rid of the ability to differentiate that green dot as me and that green dot as Bob and that one as Phil.

quoted from proposal 52..linden comments..

Beginning with map presence we'll start working toward greater privacy. This means you will not be in the directory. Additional privacy from IM contact is in the works.

"map presence" suggests to me that they are indeed talking about your dot on the map....

I hope you are right Draco, and that i am just reading it wrong...

or if you are right removing the names from the dots that might be just as bad too...

especially if the rumors of weapons that dont register in "bumps, pushes, and hits" are true...

even if "no trace" weapons dont exist....the ability to "camera spy" on ppl does, and if you can be on a sim but nobody can pull youre name up to find out that you are, that could be bad.

I understand ppl want privacy...but privacy can be abused.
Not to mention that as it stands now privacy in SL is an illusion, anybody can spy on you if they try hard enough, and the lindens of course will always be able too..

...Your name isn't attached to a dot right now anyway. Load up the map, scroll over a few sims for me and figure out who that dot is. Right now. Do it.

You can't.

That's the idea about your friends: they shouldn't be able to figure out which dot is you either, right now they can. They go to your profile and click "Show on map" and bing, a little red circle appears around you. And it's not always centered on a dot.

I think its a good idea... well cause I just made a similar suggestion. There are people I run into alot on accident that stirr up a fuss sometimes, and I'd rather them not see me. I mean sure people may use it to spy... but as for myself I really don't care about looking at anyones av.
I think it'd actually be better if they left the green dot on the map but took the av and name away. That way this person could still be invisible, avoiding that what they wanted to avoid, but still letting the people around them know that -someone- is there at least, so those others can leave if they're afraid of being spied on.

not much point in arguing here....whatever they are gonna do about this proposal, it's basicly ratified already...

I just hope it's not abused:)

Once you log on, everybody is notified, even if you set "Busy" at once, and a check will show you are online. So peoples feelings can be hurt if you decline to interact with them. (g'fs for instance).

I would suggest a button ON THE LOGIN SCREEN to chose a "Busy" mode in which no-one is notified of our arrival or departure, and we are not flagged as online, and IM's receive no "I am Busy" message.

Awesome Idea! Its the first thing i do is go into busy mode, takes time to reply to Ims when they are capped everyday. All my friends know i go into busy mode now when I log in. its just what i do, before I settle into the game.. would be a nice option to do it before you log in....

There are lots of invisibilities ideas. I'd say if someone goes invisible than everybody else appears invisible to them. It's only fair and would prevent abuse if we have invisibility.

See my proposition for Mutual Invisibility.

Well, no offense Draco but...just because you don't care about looking at someone else's AV doesn't mean there aren't a horde of others on SL that will take full advantage of that. It doesn't matter that you wouldn't do it, it matters that there are dozens of greifers and punks that would. One bad apple spoils the bunch. I think that it would be a HORRIBLE mistake if they made it so when you go invisible, you are physically invisible to those around you. If you are invis mode and go running around, knowing that there are those whom you don't want to see you, that's the risk you take. I personally find someone who's physically invisible spying on me or creating havoc because they can't be seen a worse option to risking running into someone while my name is seemingly invisible.

Take a look at Yahoo. You can be invis on Yahoo Messenger, no one knows you're on, so on and so forth. BUT if you go into the chat rooms, it's obviously very clear that you're on, because the people in the chat room can see you. THAT is what we are talking about for SL. The ability to sign on as "Invisible" and appear offline for whatever reason we want. You can still be seen physically, and if you get caught by someone you don't want to see you, then ... oops.

As for mapping...that needs to go away. I can see the purpose of mapping locations, but mapping people is a nuisance (geez I can't spell).

I've said this exact thing somewhere. "Look at ANY IM client: you can see who's only, they can't see you, but you can still message them" (except MSN because MS is stupid).
Also see my above quote.
