On a related note, in Caledon we are supposed to be a techno-Victorian society. Many of us are (if not most of us) from the U.S.A. Hearing all those broad midwestern (and harsh New Yorker) accents trying to sound british might ba a bit of a buzzkill.
Another good point. It's bad enough listening to Yank actors trying to sound like Poms or Aussies... and they're professionals with voice training, not amateurs with voice modulators.

I like the idea of voice chat coming to SL. I probably won't hardly use it (speak or listen) except in certain situations, such as get togethers with friends and such. I don't see any harm in it being available as an option, as long as we're not forced to listen to voice chat.

My sentiments exactly why make a big deal, as long as your not forced to listen or voice chat then why would anyone care. The benefits far exceed the detriments.

The reasons people care are stated thoroughly in this thread.

Whether thats enough of a reason or not not to introduce voice is debatable. .

Denying people their concerns is really basically rude. No one likes to feel marginalized.

the statement -

"Well I can see that people have concerns but I dont think voice will be as devisive as people fear" is inclusive - but pro voice.

the statement -

"I dont get why people are worried, voice is gonna be cool." is dismissive and pro voice.

Replying to Kepster who said . . .

"My sentiments exactly why make a big deal, as long as your not forced to listen or voice chat then why would anyone care. The benefits far exceed the detriments."

The introduction of Voicechat is a major concern to anyone who owns a business or just likes roleplay in SL. Those that use SL as an extention of their real life may not care about how VC will effect the game for others. But it is the immersive roleplaying experience that leads to people becoming engaged enough to spend time and money here. By in large, the provoice-chatting population are not dedicated role players and do not spend as much time and money customizing their experience.

I am glad you are getting a feature you will enjoy. But because of the way it has been introduced, non voicers are being pressured to use it and most of them may leave if VC becomes pervasive enough to ruin the immersive quality of the game that attracted them in the first place.

He he I was thinking the same here. So many English and Austarilians playing Americans on TV over here. I was wondering if the reverse were true.

Well, I'm torn. I look forward to voice as I have been a phone sex operator for almost 12 years, and before that, worked in telephone market research. Even as a child I won prizes in talent shows and small time singing competitions, so my voice has always been my bread and butter. I'm even starting a phone-sex focused nightclub in SL soon, so personally this is a windfall for me.

However, I do see how voice will intimidate some and ruin the experience for men who roleplay women or vice versa. So whether or not this is good for all SL, I can't really say. There are too many variables to weigh.

However, I still feel, it's inevitable that voice will take over and make those who refuse to voice chat, look suspicious and create mistrust. I wish this wasn't so, but we are a species that is wired to distinguish speech and make surperficial judgements based on sound. Grant it, it's not morally right, but its the way humans evolved.

And people who simply don't like the way their voice sounds.

was replying to the former posts =p

We'll see what people assume when Chat comes along. I imagine the assumptions will be based on their intelligence level.

From people im talking to, they are only intersted in voice with close freinds. Others dont think its worth the effort.

Of course I dont go in the huge crowds much anymore people there might be more interested in the virtual party line thing.

It's not about what LL still supporting keyboards, it's the jerkwads who will want everyone to voice with them and refuse to use said keyboard.

*Steals wav file, uploads, makes agesture out of it*
/voice
Say: "Learn to use a keyboard!"
Play a sound: that one.

*Grins*

Edit:
That's from Dr. Who, innit? Dr. Who 1963 I mean. I recognise the voice. Forgot the character's name though (heck, I only managed to watch up through until there was a missing episode).

Considering the quality of some people you meet if you stay in any busy setting long enough - most of us will not leave voice on (in most places) after a few weeks lol

I can only imagine what the inevitable streaker guy in the noobie av with the ugly prim penis will be saying in voice.

This all sounds like attractrive penis envy to me.

You should carry copies of handsome peni around with you and give them to griefers to neutralize them.

Trust Colette to turn a sweet and innocent thread about voice chat into a discussion about the attractiveness of male genitalia.

My all-time favourite greifer one-liner (which should really be a T-shirt) was "yew look like a fagit".

At the time, I couldn't work out whether this was actually Noam Chomsky's SL trial account and he was being ironic - but then half an hour of pushing ensued, and I got the idea, the guy really did spell (and think) like that. I guess on the bright side, there wasn't much doubt that "penii" (my latin classes say that's the plural, as is "vaginam" for "many scabbards";) was what he was after...
