From: Jacques Groshomme Back when I started, 5000 was a big deal. And when we crossed that, things got unstable. But they fixed it, and the concurrent population grew to 8000 and things got unstable. But they fixed it and the concurrent population grew to 10000 and things got unstable. But they fixed it and the concurrent population grew to 14000 and things got unstable. But they fixed it and the concurrent population grew to 18000 and things got unstable. But they fixed it and the concurrent population grew to 20000, then 22000, then 25000, then 28000, then to now 32000. They'll fix it. I've only been around long enought to remember the screaming when SL hit 10k concurrent users. For me, hanging out in my home sim, SL at 32k now usually isn't any worse 10k back then - maybe even a bit better now. They do have a lot more work to do - predicting (then avoiding) problems in particular, IMO - but I think they've held up surprisingly well under the insane growth they've seen over the last 6 months.

some nerve you have there moron....

From: Banking Laws If someone is a premium they should be given priority over nonpremium in the login queue due to being regular paying customers. Having 27k online at once would be alot easier to choke down the lag if the grid was more 'reserved' for premium access. I realize some people rent on island and/or put cash in to buy lindens, but that is their choice, and does not equate them to premium in the manner of paying money directly to LL. This is a simple feature that could be considered a benefit of premium, and help balance the cost versus just renting and buying lindens, and remaining basic. so let me get this straight.....because i'm not premium and i don't pay tier to LL anymore i shouldn't be able to play? so my tier to anshe (yes tier not rent) doesn't matter? i still shouldn't be able to play becuase you seem to think your premium account means more than what i pay? what the hell got into your sorry ass mind to make you think your better than i am cause you pay premium? what about all those damn premium accounts that don't pay tier? they get priority over me to? i think people like you shouldn't be able to play cause your a selfish moron. now that would make the grid better, ridding all the morons like yourself. perhaps i should propose a vote on it.

From: Kinga Svarog so my tier to anshe (yes tier not rent) doesn't matter? i still shouldn't be able to play becuase you seem to think your premium account means more than what i pay? If I'm paying for my phone subscription, and you pay me the cost of a call plus 10 cents, that doesn't entitle you to any kind of support from my phone company, you're not their customer in any sense of the word. Your arguement is that "I'm paying x amount a month already", but your money isn't going to LL, it's going to another resident who ends up keeping most of of it for him/herself. If you rent a whole sim off another resident, that still won't give you concierge level support from LL, why should it be any different with premium? In mid December - January I bought and spent over $200 worth of L$ and while it's a higher amount than some people are paying in tier for their sim, I'm honest enough to realize that none of it went to LL, I spent it on indulgences that ultimately benefitted content creators (and 1/3rd of went to my two landlords), and not LL. This thread - and others like it - are suggestions to actually instill some value in being or getting a premium account, other than land ownership. If those benefits aren't worth the cost to you, then you can't expect to enjoy those benefits either, you're not paying for it. It's a personal choice which implicitly rules out the segregation that's hinted at by others.

From: Kitty Barnett but your money isn't going to LL, it's going to another resident who ends up keeping most of of it for him/herself. so wait.....let me get this straight. just cause i pay tier to another resident that means they get the damn land for free and they don't pay tier to LL? thanks for your useless stupid comment there hun. really made no sense to my post. just cause you spend 200 one month out of 12 doesn't change the fact i spend way more than you do a mth and thats just lindens not including my tier. when you can think of something wise to say let me know.

Kinga - quit swearing at people in the forums. You should know that's not allowed here. Feel free to insult me and call me all the childish names you like now.
Not that I'm queen of anything, but I suggest that people ignore this poster before this thread degenerates any further.

Premium User Accounts?
02-14-2007 07:08
What about... setting limits on non-premium account inventories? Or allowing premium members to have greater numbers of items in their inventories? I am brutal with my inventory; I cut and chop every chance I get, and I still have over 5700 items. I know people with over 14,000 items. If premium members were allowed, say, 15,000 items, while free members were allowed 5000 items, would that cut down on lag? Or is that a silly idea? Or is my inventory still out of control? LOL! Just a thought.
Or... what about setting a limit on avatar prim attachments for non-premium members? Often times women's hair can run upwards of 40 prims, while a ballgown can have as many or more...If LL set non-premium avatar prims to something relatively low, that would help lag, yes?
I still think the analogy of the roadways or telephone systems is a good one...

I will take this opportunity to remind people that there is a button on the bottom of every post with an exclamation sign in a triangle-looking thing in which one can report "problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts. " This is probably a better solution than providing a forum troll more ammunition with which to assault us with swearing and insults. Many of which I'm sure are about to be heaped on me for posting this. Note: The report abuse button is red and white and sits next to the online status button, for those who have not used it before. Bring it on, Kinga. Have a lovely day. Edit: Wow, it didn't take long at all to get another barrage of filth directed my way! Happy Valentine's Day, all!

I still think the analogy of the roadways or telephone systems is a good one... Since loading the entire inventory everytime someone opens their inventory box must put a hit on the asset server, I think this is a good idea. And a lot of problems seem to be occuring with the asset server lately. When I was new I would see these posts with people complaining about thousands of items disappearing from their inventories, and I would think, sheesh, who needs that many items to begin with??? But now that I've discovered textures, it's a struggle to keep mine under 7,000. I've heard of people with over 25,000 items. Only problem is, if many of the free accounts are homeless, it's not like they can easily 'store' their stuff somewhere. I accidentally dropped a prim necklace once and found out it had almost 200 prims!! Every tiny little link was an individual prim!

While the delivery may have been a bit over the top, Kinga does bring up a pretty valid point.
Aside from the arguments already made about renting/owning on private island estates - I'm not inviting that to this thread and I hope it does not enter - is there any functional difference between a basic account holder who "owns" or "rents" land from Ansche (Pays tier to) and a premium account holder who pays tier to Linden Lab instead? Either way, Linden Lab gets that tier, so could somebody please explain why it is so important that people go premium, and if they refuse, why they should be penalized with a lesser experience in one way or another to that of premium account holders?
Consider that the only substantial difference between a basic account and a premium account is the ability to "own" mainland land. Whether you own mainland or rent island, you still pay tier, and that tier ultimately makes its way to Linden Lab. So where is the problem here? I'm confused.

I'll attempt an answer. Linden Labs gets more money by having more premium members for a number of reasons, and some of us are hoping that if Linden Labs gets more money, they will hire more people to support the infrastructure.
Is it a pipe dream? Maybe. Also, some of us have a streak of altruism and want to be premium members to pay our 'share' to help support this new world that Linden Labs has provided for us. Some people who feel like they're paying their dues feel a bit slighted at 'freeloaders' not contributing as much financially. Note: I am not personally calling people with free accounts freeloaders, I'm just trying to explain the logic behind it.
First of all, as you know, premium accounts pay a membership fee to Linden that goes straight into their pockets.
Second, the amount of tier paid to Linden Labs is not equal between renters and owners. The more land one owns, the more of a 'discount' a person gets on tier. Therefore, island owners are paying much less per sq.m. on tier to Linden Labs than premium members who own small plots of land (but more than the standard 512). There's a reason people like Anshe can charge renters less tier per sq.m. than Linden Labs and still become a millionaire.

Of course these were exactly the answers I expected to hear. From: Annabelle Vandeverre I'll attempt an answer. Linden Labs gets more money by having more premium members for a number of reasons, and some of us are hoping that if Linden Labs gets more money, they will hire more people to support the infrastructure. So there is currently a hiring freeze, because of lack of revenue? And all of this is just a big whitewash? From: Annabelle Vandeverre Is it a pipe dream? Notwithstanding your clarification that you are not calling free account holders "freeloaders", do you personally lean toward the sentiment that because you desire to pay your share, and become premium, all others should either follow suit, or receive something less than what you are receiving? What seems to trickle right down the center of each and every one of these threads is this notion that basic free accounts are less valuable to the community as a whole, and to Linden Lab, so they should be treated as second class citizens. When you boil everything else off, this is what the message reduces itself to. I couldn't disagree more. Furthermore, It is wrong headed to blame the asset system problems and other load related problems squarely on the free accounts - and proposing that the problems be resolved by getting rid of them. This is another common theme. The fact is, there is only one direction that the user base is going to go, and that is up. So the attention and focus needs to be on improving and scaling the infrastructure to support the load - and in fact that is where they are working.

If you knew what the answers were, why did you ask? Of course that's just my take on what's going on. Others may have different insights. In regards to the job listings page, it's not uncommon for companies to leave their job postings open whether there are actually positions behind them or not. It could be that they are anticipating doing more hiring in the future and are soliciting resumes in advance. Nothing unusual about that, really. I don't think that free accounts should necessarily receive less than what they are receiving now. They signed up under certain conditions and they should continue to receive what they signed up for if possible. I would ask that Linden Labs look at ways they can enhance the experience for their premium members without taking away privileges of the free accounts first. But when allowing free players to consume the vast majority of the resources becomes significantly detrimental to the people who pay for their service, it is reasonable for the people who pay for the service to question it. Numerous people who have been around much longer than I have stated that quality of the service declined significantly when free accounts were opened up. It's not about whether or not free account holders are making a valuable contribution - it's about the fact that people who pay money for a service are not getting the service they have paid for.

Vote to queue unverifieds during peak traffic times!
02-14-2007 13:56
FlipperPA Peregrine submitted a proposal asking the Lab to institute login queues for unverifieds during peak traffic hours. I totally agree with this. I have many friends with unverified accounts, but until the Lab gets its act together and scales SL to handle all the traffic, they need to do something to improve the experience not only for paying customers but for the newbies as well. Have you been to one of the newbie welcome areas lately? I mean a welcome area where newbies actually get dropped into the world, rather than the ones that are only populated by established griefers and clique-kids. The experience these poor new users are having is TERRIBLE and it's entirely due to the overcrowding and saturation of the current infrastructure. A queue for unverifieds that was only active as needed would be a great temporary solution. Please cast your votes today!
