Sen. John F. Kerry's grade average at Yale University was virtually identical to President Bush's record there, despite repeated portrayals of Kerry as the more intellectual candidate during the 2004 presidential campaign.

Kerry had a cumulative average of 76 and got four Ds his freshman year — in geology, two history courses and political science, The Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

His grades improved with time, and he averaged an 81 his senior year and earned an 89 — his highest grade — in political science as a senior.

"I always told my dad that D stood for distinction," Kerry said in a written response to reporters' questions. He said he has previously acknowledged focusing more on learning to fly than studying.

Under Yale's grading system in effect at the time, grades between 90 and 100 equaled an A, 80-89 a B, 70-79 a C, 60 to 69 a D, and anything below that was a failing grade.

In 1999, The New Yorker magazine published a transcript showing Bush had a cumulative grade average of 77 his first three years at Yale, and a similar average under a non-numerical rating system his senior year.

Bush's highest grade at Yale was an 88 in anthropology, history and philosophy. He received one D in his four years, a 69 in astronomy, and improved his grades after his freshman year, the transcript showed.

Kerry, a Democrat, previously declined to release the transcript, which was included in his Navy records. He gave the Navy permission to release the documents last month, the Globe reported.

Kerry graduated from Yale in 1966, Bush in 1968.

Bush had a higher GPA.

Grades != Intelligence

I've known plenty of gifted kids who had very high IQ's but just refused to do their schoolwork because they were interested in other things.

Elvis was the smartest President.

Everyone knows this. And when the King returns, and descends from the lathe of heaven in the year 2014, bathed in more bling-light than a sexay avie contest on a cold night in January, y'all houndawgs better be ready!

And the Godfather of Bling will take his place next to President Elvis. It is high time we RESPECT and recognize the true Godfather of Bling:

Reasons people think Bush might not be too smart:

"They said this issue wouldn't resignate with the People. They've been proved wrong, it does resignate." - George W. Bush

"It seemed like to me they based some of their decisions on the word of — and the allegations — by people who were held in detention, people who hate America, people that had been trained in some instances to disassemble — that means not tell the truth." —George W. Bush, on an Amnesty International report on prisoner abuse at Guantanamo Bay, Washington, D.C., May 31, 2005 (Disassemble actually means to take apart. Why do people think Bush is stupid?)

Thats not really the point. Grades don't really count for much, but they can be a yardstick. I know plenty of really gifted children who get straight A's with minimal effort. And I contend Kerry is a dumbass because he has an 8K mountain bike :D

It's not the point? Grades don't mean anything... But then it is the point and they do (which is why you posted the article in the first place, isn't it)?

I have very little respect for you. :(

Well, I just don't like you. Period.

The point is, when it’s George Bush's grades that are middle road, he is a dumbass, when it is John Kerry's grade that are middle of the road, suddenly grades don't count for anything! Neither does Education! Woot!

It is called hypocrisy and irony. I didn’t expect that I would have to draw a roadmap but I just did for the slow people.

I don’t think the grades a man made in college before I was born really determine the man he is today. So, I don’t care.

Naw, not all of us, I'd rather say he's an intelligent man. Or perhaps, he's simply suffering from some disability that encourages him to take up such an utterly thankless job.

Irregardless of political affiliation, or viewpoint, I'll side with the human being, and endeavor to find the aspect of him that can be appreciated. Color me naive.

As long as neither George Bush or John Kerry are actually posting on this thread we can make all the personal attacks on them we like. :P

I wasn't talking about his political affiliation or viewpoint. He's been quoted, read and heard enough that anybody can tell he's not the brightest bulb in the shed. My 5 year old niece heard him talking once (and the context eludes me) but he said a Bushism that made her cover her mouth and laugh.

Everyone, lets just agree on one thing. Both were from wealthy, well connected families. When money comes into the picture, who needs good grades?

Thank goodness that human being is the kind who is willing to murder innocent civilians on a flimsy pretext. It really endears him to the masses. Regardless of his moral failings or his academic standing, he is still an absolute moron. One need not cite his grades as proof, as he's provided the world with hours of hilariously idiotic speeches and debates.

Also: irregardless is not a real word.

I could not agree more.

I try to keep it to myself as I have lots of friends in Uni and my SO even just completed a degree... but I find "grades" a poor indicator of intelligence or wisdom. Even IQ scores are incompetant.

I've met people who congratulate themselves constantly for their scholastic accomplishments. When they tell me about that 92 they got in statistical mathematics or that 89 in applied logic -- I just say, "So what? You learned how to jump hoops."

Smart enough to be get elected… Kerry wasn’t so what does that say for your boy? And don’t give me that “I’m a 3rd partier” crap.

The point is that Libs blasted Bush for his supposed lack of intelligence and pointed specifically to his college grades while touting Kerry’s brilliance while hiding his grades from everyone. At least President Bush had the nads to own up for his academic record when it counted for something and he knew it would hurt him. I have no respect whatsoever for Kerry and the way this went down.

Turnabout is fair play… let’s here you libs blast your poster boy Kerry for being a dumbass now. Time to put up, or shut up.

For the record, no matter who it is and there have been Presidents that I REALLY didn’t like, you aren’t a dumbass if you make it all the way to the Presidency. How about doing something decent for a change and show a little respect for the office and what that takes to get there if nothing else. Nothing is gained whatsoever other than making YOU look like a dumbass by saying that the President of the United States is one.

Oh, and Neehai… you can find really dumb things that EVERY public figure has said, that doesn’t mean that they all are stupid. Did you somehow forget all of the dumb quotes from Kerry? I don’t think that Kerry or President Bush are stupid. That is just a childish insult thrown around for effect.

I know that SL is a haven for liberals and that Bush and conservative bashing is popular here but give it a rest already. You haven’t said anything here that hasn’t been said hundreds of times on these forums. Enough is enough. Move along now onto something constructive and stop wallowing in bitterness and hate just because your boy lost.

With more people like you around in the 1940s we would all be speaking German. People die when you are in a war, it is a means to an end and a better world sometimes. Face it, the road to freedom is paved with blood. A harsh but true reality.

I don't mean to prick and prattle, but THE war was over by 1950. For a couple of years at that point.

Paved in blood? What kind of hypocrisy is that?

War doesn't bring peace since peace would never make war.

It doesn't matter who started what now... war has been happening for a very very long time. Is it impossible to overcome the cycle or just challenging?

If you didn't MEAN to do it you would not have actually done it... hehe. After all, you took the time to hit the quote button, edit my post, and type out a semi-intelligent reply... lol. Does that sound like something that was done by accident? :D

Ooh, so now it doesn't mean anything (although it was pointed out so often during the election), okay!

And one could also argue that IQs aren't everything, either. Besides I'd rather have a 100 IQ guy that cares about people running a country than a 160IQ ASSHOLE running things.

Now I'd like to see Gore's grades, something tells me not to expect too much there either.

I didn't even talk about the election, I was just pointing out a fallacy.

I'd personally rather have the smart asshole running the country than the dumb guy, as long as the smart asshole was an atheist, wasn't from a rich family, and didn't get paid off by corporate interests. :)
