Where is your skypad? I need to know, so as not to get near it. I often don't see things until I'm right on top of them. I usually look at this as those things grabbing ME, sometimes trapping me, rather than me actually wanting or intending to run into them.

From: Darkness Anubis I have one on the family home. BUT...
I was very careful setting it up. The max height of it is actually just below the level of the house roof and the edges stop at the boarders of my land. This system does not teleport home and should not crash the game. I also have warning signs posted and the red linden bars up as warning. I also took the time to have Lee Linden come and examine they system and my setup and it passed his inspection.
Now as to why use one...
In our family (and yes we are a RL family playing SL together) we have several members who have been hurt badly in RL. One has had severe head injuries. When someone harasses this family member (and it does happen) she needs a place she can go that she knows is completely safe for the time it takes her to regroup and sort out what happened. This system helps to give her this safe place.
Now if all of you want to neg rate me or get ugly here in the forums be my guest. My point in posting this is that there are responsible and reasonable ways to use these devices AND that there are valid reasons for needing them. Yes i agree with this. I for one would *like* to have privacy on my land and ther are many reasons for wanting it. Just because you cant think of why *you* would want it, doe not mean there is not a valid reason for someone else to desire privacy. IMO, if LL could find a way, (*any* way) for there to actually be privacy in SL the need for most of the security stuff would evaporate.

It's not very hard and achieves your stated objectives. Aggressive security scripts are just an over-reaction to a problem that rarely arises. Yes, I abuse report each and every user who tosses me a sim away, or causes me to crash, with their infantile security toys.

hmm,
On the subject of these devices, as a result of recent attacks and threats made against the Aerodrome by an unnamed greiefer, we will be deploying a security grid throughout most of the sim.
This grid will not affect 99% of people, as it is not automated, and will only take action against a person when an aerodrome staffer sends the command to the interface.
That said, there will be a banlist on it, but it will only send warnings to the banlist person until an aerodrome member takes action.
As far as I am concerned, it will be totally TOS compliant, but if people want to discuss it with me, I am open to suggestion and *constructive* critism

From: Susie Boffin I probably don't know what I am taking about as usual but why can't people use the existing tools? When a griefer attcks my land I just ban them and that seems to end it. Don't club owners like to ban griefers or something? What good is a ban using the land tools if the banned person can stand next to or above the banned area and continue to drop C4 or banana phones and ruin an event or club patrons? (and no i dont own a club lol) Edit: Hmmm exploding banana phones... I might have to play around with that.

You can put up a barrier but you cant stop someone camera-ing around. My point was that if it was possible to sit in ones house and be secure and *know* that no one can see you or whatever, then security needs might vanish.

How about this?
06-04-2005 01:44
You know...I know nobody has thought about this, but how about building into the software a nice wall, extending to, say, Mars...Around any property tagged as 'I don't want anybody coming onto my land'? Something that neither unsits, nor ejects? It just physically prevents anybody from entering a parcel.
I mention this because I habitually fly at 2000 meters in my hovercar. This prevents griefers from actually seeing (or shooting at) my car as I fly over them. Regardless of this fact, security systems shoot me out of the air about two out of every three flights. I never have any warning that these systems are present. There are no red warning beacons on my minimap or 'HOSTILE FORCES AHEAD' on my HUD. I would happily go around if I had but a tag telling me 'I don't want anybody flying over my house' whether there were AA guns or not.
Instead, I just lose my vehicle and I become imbedded in the geometry. I have to log out and log back in again just to get SL to respond again. Sometimes I have to reboot the whole computer. This problem of having to log out and log back in again is, in every sense of the term, a severe software bug.
I lost my first car this way and I was fairly upset. As a new user, it was a compelling reason to leave and never return.
Be that as it may, I run into walls all the time when I'm taking off from my friend's house. I run into 'voids' all the time and I've never entered them. I never get ejected or become imbedded in the geometry when I actually run into anything. Why should I lose my vehicle or have to reboot my computer because somebody doesn't want me on his land?
Why is ejecting me from my vehicle...Or the sim...necessary at all when what you want is me to stay off your land? Why not just force me to go around it? This should be a feature of the software. Something nonviolent. Something fair. Something that doesn't make me crash ICly OR OOCly.
I hope Linden Labs seriously considers this solution or a similar solution to the problem, as it very much reduces play experience whether flying with or without a vehicle, or even just walking across the mountains.
If Linden Labs does not consider this solution, I implore script developers to look into ways to build such a security device that acts as a wall, rather than an SAM launcher and sell it to those who want privacy.
And if anybody finds my first car, can you return it to me? I'm still upset about losing it.
Thank you.

You know, I think I have a better idea for security...
This would take LL working on it, but it would actually be totally secure! Really!
This simple:
If the person would not be able to enter the land, either by ban or allwance, then the prims in that land don't rez for him.
Simple!
In addition, have avatars who are in the land not rez either. Leave them on the map, let people know that their are people in there, but just don't rez any of it!
Some other tweaks would be needed to acutally secure against griefer attack, but this WOULD give privacy... And you would get pretty landscaping too!
And for those who whine that they want their pretty builds to be seen, but not touched: Bloody tough. That's just selfishness talking, and I have rarly listened to that. You don't want to be a part of SL, then don't be a part of SL. Turn off security when you leave.

I have been on both sides of this fence.
As a new user I bought a 512 and a house. I had griefers attacking me for fun. A friend taught me to raise my house above the clouds( I didn't want to go higher than I could TP home or offer a tp to my home). So the fly rod wasn't an option. After raising my house all was well for a few day, then the griefers were in my house. I set a ban but it only affected the land, not high up. They would attach huge signs to their arm and wave it through my walls, I won't even comment on what the signs were..
I contacted a friend who took me to a place t buy a security system. It was a little ball I placed in my living room. I set it to knock them off my land only, but they made bigger signs. I was forced to set it higher and cut the warning time. When I got an IM from a person wrongly attacked I would add their name to my access list. I wanted to just use the ban option, but the griefers were too many. The device made my SL much better as I could build, ponder etc within the security of my tiny house.
On the other side of this issue... I was tping to a store, as always I fly as high as I can to get a higher speed and avoid the rezzing buildings etc. Suddenly I find myself in my livingroom.. hmmm I thought, a glitch maybe.. I tried again to go to that store only to arrive safely at my home again. After the 3rd try I gave up, I found the owner of the security system and asked him to adjust it to warn me(10 seconds would give me time to fly by). He was very rude, insisting it's his right to use the system any way he wants. So I never made it to that store.
To me it's an issue of consideration. When I set up my system the intent was to allow me peace when I wanted it, and it served that purpose. When I could, I made it friendly to the good people. The idea was to only attack griefers. Griefers neg rate too, so negs mean little to me. .....
I loved my hs system and would never deny another the right to be free from griefers, but at the same time I understand how other feel getting attacked for no reason by an overly aggesive system. At the same time if it's your land you should be able to keep it secure. So what is the answer? Maybe LL can create someting that would work, but that would kill an entire industry. Maybe those creating such systems will set the default settings lower so a newbie doesn't attack people 96 meters away with an ultimate attack. Who knows the answr? Not me, but I would hate the idea of taking away a needed tool.

I amy just be repeating other sentements here because I have not bothered to read though every post, but after my little rare excursion through the world last weekend, I have started to neg rate anyone who uses them. I was in a slow flying airship, and woe be unto me if I flew over someones home. Good thing I built the ship myself, so I had copies. I would not have been able to find it again in some cases.
So yeah, I neg rate users of security systems. We should start a group or something.

From: Stromko Perkins Should I just buy a tazer and hit every person on the street as I go to work, because one of them might be a mugger? No. But you may lock the doors to your house.

From a recent Hotline question: /invalid_link.htmlGood reason to review your security system if you employ one.

Hey! That's way better than my idea! You even save the bandwidth AND prevent people from standing in your neighbor's yard from seeing your house. You're brilliant!

I'm just getting interested in security systems for the first time. This is why: After working with a friend for many weeks, building a fancy cinema/movie-theatre, its now nearly ready to open. I installed it today in its final position in refugio, put a short movie clip running, and set the access to a $10 entry charge. Not really trying to make money, just to see what happened.
As I was leaving, I looked back and saw I had a visitor.
It must have taken him about 5 seconds to spot the weakness in my setup.
My cinema is unusual in that it has a large 7x3 prim screen, and steeply raked (sloped) seating, so that it is quite tall. Taller than the access control height.
So this guy calmly positioned himself just above the critical height, next to the roof, and hovered there. Clearly he had steered his camera in through the roof, got a nice view of the screen, and clicked his media play button. He watched the movie. Saved $10.
I had realised this was possible, but thought people would be a bit embarassed to do it. Hmmmm.
To reduce the size and height of the auditorium would kill the special atmosphere I'm trying to offer.
And I'm planning to try quite hard to get good content, which will cost me money to access, and maybe stream myself. I'll need to charge entry, unless I'm just going to churn out the usual free black and white rubbish. Which I'm working hard to avoid.
What should I do ? I don't want to harm people flying over. Would a script that detects anyone remaining in the area ( or even stationary in the area), then warns them, then pushes them away firmly but gently be ok ? Luckily they do have to be over my land to see my video stream, but I guess you can still steer a camera down from about 30m up. I'll have to experiment. Anyone know the distance?
All advice welcome.

From: Of Oz What should I do ? Here's my idea: The parcel media controls can be specific to agents, so: Every ten seconds a script scans the area, all agents over your land and above the level of your theater get sent a command to stop playing the movie. That way, they have to be inside your theater - a paying customer - to see more than the first ten seconds of the movie. No ejecting, no teleporting, no pushing required IM me if you'd like me to whip one up for ya.

Thank you, Jillian. I had no idea the movie controls allowed the parcel owner to manipulate an individual viewer's experience. I just checked the wiki, and By George - you're right ! Wonder how long ago that was added ?
As for your offer, thats very generous. I might come back to you, but let me have a try at scripting it myself first. Thats the way to progress , isn't it ?
