What browser are you all using? Firefox and IE can read it fine. I'm not sure about Safari or Opera

Sweet! I can do what I like to do in RL when I'm bored.. got the Hot or Not site and carpetbomb them with the lowest rating possible!

I figure the old self esteem is already in need of affirmation.... targets just ripe for the pickin!

The first time I tried accessing the website, it refused to load. However, it came up after I retried later that evening.

I actually didn't know that was happening. Can someone throw a MiniMac my way so I can find a workaround? Perhaps when I take a shinehammer it it'll work. Are you getting a rendering problem or an actual error message?
I'm getting nothing. The site wont load in the window period, white square. :)

I keep wondering if my rating is high cause the guys think I'm a chick. hehe

Dianne... try this URL?

http://www.ratemyav.com/index2.php

I'm wondering if Safari is blocking the HTTP header redirect the site is attempting somehow.

Regards,

-Flip

My suggestion is to change the max picture specs from 640x480@500K to 1024x768@400K.

This will make for better looking pictures for players who wear outfits that incorporate hi-res textures, while at the same time will save server space by prohibiting unoptimized and uncessarily large size image files.

Just for the record,

There's no point in making clothing or skin a high resolution than 512x512. The entire make up of your second life avatar - lower body, upper body, and head, including all layers, skin, pants, shirt, etc - is calculated once when you put on a new outfit. The entire avatar body is layered and painted into a single texture so you only have to transfer one texture to each client, and that can not exceed 512x1024. If you're using bigger textures, you're just wasted space, bandwidth, and server cycles every time you change an outfit.

Cheers,

-Flip

This would be a really really bad idea, from a bandwidth perspective. Speaking from experience with Snapzilla over the past 6 months, even with the postcard resolution images, bandwidth usage continues to skyrocket - it has gone from 10 gb for the first month of Snapzilla, to July, which just topped 100 gb of transfer. Depending on its success, RateMyAv could be buried if bandwidth is not kept under control.

Burke & everyone interested in keeping bandwidth low:

I was in charge of keeping images to reasonable sizes and managing the "image size" versus "quality of image" (otherwise known as "tech department" versus "design department";) at CDnow, and can recommend a number of tools in the freeware realm for these things.

First off, starting with version 4.3.2, PHP ships with the GD library included. If compiled with the "--with-gd" flag, it comes with a handy sweet of tools. These tools allow you to take an uploaded jpeg, resize it, and compress it server side so that every time it is downloaded thereafter, it is much smaller than the original upload. My guess is that this is what the package RateMyAv is using utilizes, and can probably be tweaked to lower picture size with minimal artifacting.

If you don't have control over your PHP distro - or aren't using PHP - there's a free, open source tool out there called ImageMagick. Its basically a command line tool you can call that does many of the function of Photoshop (and friends). It can automatically resize and compress any image to be a reasonable size as well, and all kinds of other tricks beyond the capacity of the PHP GD library. This is what I use for the GIF 89a ---> SL targa texture tool available at http://www.SLBoutique.com/anim/

I hope these tips help!

Well...
On the 9th I added RMAV to my signature. Then it suddenly caught on.
In the time I've had around 1,500 unigue hits.
Almost 1.6gb in two days. I am having to upgrade my hosting in order to deal with what might be the biggest site I've ever done.

RMAV NEEDS A CODER!
At the moment I just need to fix the profile feilds.

RMAV NEEDS ADVERTISERS!
... yeah, I'm a whore. Actually, I need to test the banner system AND I need a little cash to pay for a) the coder and b) upgraded hosting for the month.
