LOL love it! Prison rolling. Ok idea. Everyone who has ever been banned goes to "Redemption Island" They have to of course redeem themselves. For example give classes to anyone who will listen about the negative impact of griefing. "Don't do as I do" sort of thing. I agree make em wear uniforms. I vote for something completly silly like ....oh I don't know "Rats" LOL. They are on an honor system. So if they screw up they may find that their stay is much longer than they wish. Community service always has a postive impact so why not. Say for example they need 1000 points to get off the island. Each "community service" they preform gets them 10 points. See not just a quick fix. Give em all a nice 512 plot make them live within certain standards. If they do so well award some more points to them also.

Ya I hear this. The other problem is, how much do we want to pay for a grid just for people that act poorly? They need to buy/set up/ and maintain servers for this, and eventually the cost would get passed on to US. So I hear what you are saying. The idea was worth batting around I think. You just gave one more reason against. ![]() But, yeah, this will get some more good forum banter. ![]() HP _____________________

I'll go so far as to say that the griefers would quite possibly love this idea. The thought of being sent to jail and hanging out with others of their kind would be cool to them. Or, if you implement some kind of no inventory, no chat, no contact with anyone of any kind type of thing, they'll either grief with an alt like they do now and not care or use some readily availible software to keep them online until their "sentence" is up. I don't see this idea working. I'm definitely considering Broken Templar's idea. Isolation, plan and simple. I thought about the alt griefing a bit, and I'm not too worried, because they're buying an another account, and if it's done consistantly through the trial period, I say rewrite the EULA to that if they grief with that account, they bought it. At $10 bucks a griefing incident, either the griefer will continue until he exhausts his alt limit or runs out of money. Either way, I'm pretty sure LL would love that, it makes them money. If the griefer steals a credit card, then that's ID theft and that's a federal crime, last I heard. They can end up in the pokey for real and receive their therapy in the slammer. Ya I hear this. The other problem is, how much do we want to pay for a grid just for people that act poorly? They need to buy/set up/ and maintain servers for this, and eventually the cost would get passed on to US. Well, I hate to say this, but I think we should use the way it works here in the United States: we overcrowd it and underfund it. Just one sim to contain them, if it crashes constantly, it's not my problem, it's the griefers' own fault. If they can still communicate, maybe they can stop being selfish and strike up a schedule, but I doubt it. I don't know, this thought sometimes brings out the worst in me. Maybe I should think more happy thoughts. |

Hmmmm, I also like the idea of a Devils Island type sim. But when the evil doer next logs on after his last bad deed, have him log into a seat on a flying plane, with others headed for the same destination. At the right altitude, just dump them into a bay. A grey, lonesome island, with nothing on the horizon. Let there be large tv screens with a huge face of a Linden espousing the benefits of changing their ways, and run this diatribe 24/7, and always within earshot. Oh and no flying, just walking. And and and. . . lots of lag! yea, that's the ticket! Lots of lag!

This would definitely feed griefing. Imagine some griefer with a fake rough beard drawling "I'm the hardest griefer in SL, I've done some long stretches in my time... "
I think it'd be a culture thing that would grow up... You're not a griefer unless you've done time, then you're rock hard... |

But then the griefer can simply turn the sound down and put SL in background, just raising it every few minutes to avoid the 15min afk logout. There need to be carnivorous turtles on this island, if one reach the AV then he is devoured (logged out) ; the user would have to walk constantly to avoid it. _____________________

...but then jail time transforms into a SuperMario game :/ Plus there are programs that can feed SL with a constant key input so the AV could be running in circles, in the background.

Flexible punishments, not a prison game
08-16-2005 05:55
A prison would be a game, people would brag about having been in prison.
The Linden staff doesn't want to terminate accounts because that terminates a real or potential income stream. One way to increase the effectiveness of dealing with troublemakers is greater flexibility in how to respond to rulebreaking. As an example, fines could be imposed for some actions. Restricting access to only some parts of the grid, such as the Lindens being able to restrict a pushgun abuser's access to Linden owned land. This would inconvenience the perpetrator but not shut off their access to privately owned land where they aren't on the owner's access restriction list. This could be done on a temporary or permanent basis. Punishments at present consist of wrist slaps, suspensions of up to two weeks, and the death penalty. The "death penalty" cuts off Linden Research 's access to the perp's money, and is thus used as an absolute last resort. |

I love the idea of a carnivorous turtles, maybe I should build one for my garden in Furu. LOL, though it might discourage people from hanging out in my garden, but it would be funny as hell. ![]() With regard to sound, I think that the SIM should play Barry Manilow music in a continuous loop 24 x 7. If that dosen't discourage people from wanting to go there I don't know what would. (apologies in advance to any Barry Manilow fans out there). ![]() _____________________

What if they had to perform menial tasks in the prison sim?
As in: There are 9 Cubes lined up. When one lights up, they click it. They have to do this for a certain amount of times, or for a length of time. While it might look like a game at first, it would certainly get boring as hell after a while. _____________________

I don't understand why this thread got started.....

I offer my services as warden. Be ready for cattle prods, solitary confinement, sweat boxes, and chain gangs. BUT!! I might as well add some funnies as well for the sake of justice ![]() - Wardens and guards are applied for by the general public and are paided by donations or by the system according to the level of dwell within the security area which includes the prison guards, the prisoners and visitors. The payout is a weekly thing like stipends but the money pot is equally divided among them. The more guards there is, the less money there is to share. - Give the warden/guards/visitors protection from threats by hiding their ingame names from others while in the security/prison area. - Separate male and female like how real prison's work, lock the gender type at the time of the arrest, so they are committed to the right prison. - No holds bar type of environment to simulate the harsh prison life. Typical rudimentary weapons premade by the Lindens such as clubs, knives, or even basic bare knuckles to fight each other with and no outside weapons. - No stipends or earnings for the prisoner during the prison time, consider it like the "proceeds from crime" type law to suppliment the warden/guard's pay/weekly stipends. - Interaction levels between the prisoners and guards should be carefully monitored by the warden and there should be a punishment suitable for the guard/s if they are too friendly with the prisoner/s (like smuggling weapons in for them for example). - Luxuries are earned by doing tasks for the warden or guards ( i wont say what type of tasks other than cleaning up ![]() - Appointed warden/guards could hold events for the public to watch for a additional earning/fee, this could be like a gladiator type setting or a sports-like setting. Such a event could also give some creative genious a way to escape if the guards are not carefully watching. Good for Roleplaying purposes since the area is a no holds bar zone. - Add a shower room and a "dropped" bar of soap as a reminder how prison life can be so horrific. ![]() |

(apologies in advance to any Ophrah Winfry fans out there as well). ![]() BTW, Rose, i like Barry Manilow.... ![]() *hums to herself* Ok - you've convinced me, 8 hours of Philip Linden talking about the perils of griefing, 8 hours of Barry Manilow and 8 hours of Ophrah. Every now and again we should throw in a couple hours of "Badger, Badger" too. Though I think we should be careful with the Badger, Badger music, we don't want to trigger any serial killer buttons on them. I kind of like Catherine's idea of a Redemtion Island. People get sent there and they have to earn "good deed" points to get out. That seriously has some merit. In other words, offer them a choice - something like teach a new person how to do XYZ or take a one week suspension from SL. Also - I don't think that withholding the stipend from someone who is punished for griefing is such a bad idea either. I guess I sort of started this thread to explore other ways of dealing with people who are merely mischievous (differently than those who are "bad to the bone" thief, con-artist and destructive types). _____________________

A New Revenue Stream
08-16-2005 13:41
Before being banished to Prison Island, they also win a cavity search, done publicly. The Lindens are looking for ways to monetize the time we spend here, this would be a way; people would likely be willing to pay for public cavity searches, and others to watch. Perhaps the search amphitheatre at Prison Island should be added to the new Entry Points display at Orientation Island. _____________________

When I think of a "prison" area, I think of the Dark Forest.
In the Redwall series of books, the Dark Forest was basicly the afterlife, the plac you went when you died. On Redwall MUCK where I was a staffer, "todf" was the command used to send griefers, idiots and otherwise unruly players to the Dark Forest room, usualy pending either a stern talking to or waiting for a Wizard to come deal with it. Less serious greifing (most frequently twinking/causing disruptions, the equivilant of shooting people in the sandbox here) usualy meant a shorter stay (a few hours to a week), serious and repeat offenders were left judgement of the Chief Wizard who would review the logs and usualy ban the offender and all their alts. No communication could be sent outside the Dark Forest, and you could not jump (teleport) out or "gohome". There's a few ways the Lindens could benifit from this sort of "prison". For starters, going by resident accounts, it seems that they're doing the 'stern talking to" part at the scene of the crime, where if it's something like an event disruption, dealing with a greifer on-scene would be somewhat counter-productive to stopping the disruption. (In fact, the first warning was often having the offender swept (llTeleportAgent) to their home and warned that they'd be sent to Dark Forest if they continued. The ability to sweep was later extended to other players...it was always avalible to you in rooms you owned, but the upgrade allowed room owners to designate other people with sweep ability there. *cough*grouplandtools*cough*). It also prevents them from going out and greifing other people while the affair is being forwarded up the command chain, or even just if we were short staffed at the moment. Cooling one's heels in Dark Forest is not entertaining, whether you're the person put there or the people watching them...and nor should any sort of serious "prison" sim be. (On the other hand, watching our chief wizard deflate griefers with cold logic before giving them a Boot To The Head (and boot out of the game) with steel-toed boots, is.) And unlike Linden Lab, or Chief Wiz has no hesitation about posting logs. _____________________
