No havok2, no firefox integration.

I'll wait for the next preview, hehe.

Aliasi, there is such a thing as a development process. The fact that you HAVE a preview means that 1.7 has long entered feature freeze.

What happened to Havok-2 and HTML-on-a-prim?
08-31-2005 07:21
Yeah, the Havok-2 work is still in progress. It turned out to be harder than I expected, despite having done it 75% once before. We discovered that it is still possible to get "deep thinks" if we aren't smart enough about how we assemble the shapes of objects. We know how to fix it, but we haven't finished writing it.

The embedded Mozilla Firefox effort was also incomplete. I wasn't involved in that, but from what I heard Mozilla is a very big very complicated codebase that isn't well documented. So finding that last function that needs to be called "just so" along with 20 others takes some blood, sweat, tears... and time. As a result, it just wasn't ready on schedule, and we had all this other work finished which needed to get out.

At the moment, and for the past couple of weeks, all of the developers are working to get 1.7 out as soon as possible. Once it is done then most of us can get back to the projects that didn't make it in this release.

*shrug* plenty of MMOGs roll out changes on a test server, find they don't work so well, and tweak it before release.

City of Heroes does this. Their test server has been running the "Issue 5" material for over a month now, letting people play with (and get bored with, I'd imagine *g*) new powers before they hit the mainstream.

Yes, I had that in mind (since I used to play CoH) but most of 'em do.

Now, Second Life isn't your typical MMOG by any stretch, but given that nearly all of them use a test server for that purpose, is it really so odd of me to say "hey, they can make changes on Preview and test before sending it Live?"

Does LL normally work that way? DamnifIknow, as I've never paid close attention to the previews before.

Land Question:
08-31-2005 08:28
Does anyone know if buying prievew land counts?

EX - If I own my maximum land of 512, and buy a few parcels in priview, do I have to pay?

List of Cool Things I've done first... I think
  1. Put on sale a key mod that makes SL more like an FPS
  2. Made my own custom attachment points - looking for a good use
  3. Found "secret" login screen.
  4. Created a way to call Java methods from LSL --> Thread

You get a notice saying "you have used X of Y of your allowed land use. This land is discounted, and 0 sq meters will be applied towards your land use."

In short, it's free.

Well, I was able to stay inworld long enough to discover I absolutely hate the way the IM window functions now. It constantly resizes itself, which is incredibly annoying. After my 60-second battle with that window, I crashed out, and I've been unable to get back in since. The list of new features is very impressive; I just wish I could actually try them out. So far, this seems to be the least stable preview yet.

Shiny Is Broken

OMG THEY BROKE MY SHINY!

The nature of Shiny Objects was changed for 1.7

After some discussion with people last night, we decided it's something to do with the new sky gradient. Unfortunately the new sky gradient makes all shiny objects look sort of muddy and satiny. It's pretty, yes, but it makes solid colors look like pastels.

This is what Shiny Objects (High) looks like in 1.6

This is going to mess up a lot of people's creations.

Accurately colored objects on the map... this is probably a precursor to the new rendering architecture.

One of the features that excites me the most about this version isn't even documented:

Looks more like fogging. Is your draw distance set much lower in 1.7?
