How long did it take to become hooked?

How long after your first moment in SL did it take before you were "hooked?" By hooked, I mean deciding that SL is more than something you will just "try out" for a little while.

About 20 minutes.
Once I figured out how to fly around, I stumbled upon a classic build, "Toilet Guy".
I knew at that moment, I was home.

I checked "I was hooked before I started".

I read about SL on the website - did searches for related websites (Ulrika's, a few others popped up) - and ran out and bought a graphics card specifically for the game.

Considering I'd never played on online game before, and I dropped $150 just to try out SL based on what I'd read, I'd say I was hooked before I even logged in for the first time.

I think SL is like a cult. You just wanna see what is going and you are soon going without sleep being lured to stay in the cult or you will die. Subliminal messages are flashed across the screen that the mind cannot see because they are flashing way too fast and if you play all the music backwards in any club you will hear Satan's voice saying "You cannot live without me!!!!"

Gawd it is Monday!!!!!!!!!! I need help!

I checked 1 day even though I was already very intrigued before I started. A friend mentioned how she was enjoying SL. I had visions of an embryonic form of Otherland.

When I came to check out the game, I had to deal with the shock of the somewhat clunky user interface (it ain't smooth or particularly helpful) and the learning curve associated with it. I was also disappointed by how unnatural avatar movement is on the ground. All in all, the first couple of hours left me unsure of whether I would stick with it.

Then I started meeting people and flying (how cool is that?) places. That's when my whole view on the game changed and I became addicted to seeing new places and meeting up with new friends.

Next addiction: Doing something with the little bit of rocky land I just bought. :)

Pre-SL I had been interested in virtual worlds for a while, but wasn't really into conventional games where you had to fight, level up, etc. As a Mac user there weren't many options anyway (I had played The Sims on my Mac and Animal Crossing on the GameCube, nothing networked), so when LL offered the Mac beta I was already chomping at the bit; I knew I was going to spend serious time in SL before I even arrived at Orientation Island.

Me to”I checked "I was hooked before I started".” - as Internet/Cyber has been one of my communication roads since early 90-is - i have never played games before (I use mail, Internet) but this are not a game (for me).. this are a part of my life today.....New friends - new things to do.

Are from birth curios - - will hopefully die curios.. in SL I can be that...

Same here.
I like Myst and Riven type games, where there's things to discover and figure out. The fact that SL content was constantly evolving meant and endless supply of new things to see and do. Like a big museum amuesment park combo.

Actually, I was half-expecting another There. I hadn't read much about SL, and it had been many months since I'd cancelled my There account to play some MMRPGs. But the lure of a 'free' subscription hooked me. I finished the newb area, played around with a few prims, then flew around a while. I wanted to buy some non-newb clothes but they came in an object container and I couldn't figure out how to extract the contents -- that's when I hit the "live help" button. Within a few minutes, I was talking to a helper who was so gracious and friendly -- she gave me some pointers on things to do, showed me how to open the object container and wear my new things. THEN when I complimented her on her outfit, she gave me a copy.

At that precise moment, I knew I wasn't going to be leaving any time soon :) Nothing I've seen or done since then has changed my mind. If anything, I'm more hooked than ever, and I haven't even seen .001% of SL.

It took me a couple of days, because the first evening was a bit frustrating, learning how to do simple tasks myself. The second day was again me flying around by myself, but during that time I ran across several shops and a gallery and was very fascinated.

On the third day I dumped my free trial, bought a premium account, and began looking for land. I was hooked.

3rd day for me too.

I came from TSO *shudders* and I wasn't sure that I wanted to lay down my addiction to that game. Luckily I had a friend here that was willing to hold my hand and show me the ropes. I think I logged into TSO one time after I started SL and I thought, 'this sucks." LOL Cancelled the accounts and haven't even thought of going back.

I was looking for something different and I downloaded There and SL. Spent half an hour on There then came on SL and never went back.

When I had an enforced break of about 3 weeks, I thought I would go mad. Even used to click connect just to see the log in screen.

OMG someone help me :)

It was like discovering Atlantis or Eden or something.

I was in a haze of wonderment for a good 3 or 4 weeks after my first connection opened up to SL.

Was Lynn Lippman's Flea Market that sealed the deal for me - the one in early Feb. ;04 I guess it was.

I gave myself a week, and even though I was sure at first, I was sure of being sure by the end of those 7 days. :)

I had to put 10 days to a month because my first two weeks I was frozen still. I couldnt move and was getting less than a ful frame a minute. I then discovered a $90 charge on my credit card and signed on just to be a cry baby and whine about being billed for a game that didnt work.

Some people helped me with my settings and I was then hooked after abouit 5 minutes.

It's on and off for me. Right now, I'm not as hooked like I was.

My hooking made also a "What's this?" sound. I literally couldn't (and in some measure yet can't) believe to my eyes...

I was hooked before I joined. This was exactly what I was looking for, in many ways.

Once I discovered 'shiny' prims, I was just set to go.

That and binge-building my ass off in the beginning helped. I still do things in SL, perhaps not with the same frequency, but it still commands my attention over passive things like TV or even some movies when I'm at home. Other than that, I go out to RL clubs, that don't lag at all!!

Hah.

I'd heard loads about it, had great trouble getting in (someone had to buy me this account) and then was very disappointed.

Everyone seemed to be rude and cliquey and there didn't seem to be anything to do.

I'm still not sure what made me have another go rather than allow the trial to expire. I learnt to avoid all the people I knew in another worlds, and found the game-playing (it was then bingo) scene.

I got into the beta with a phony credit card number generator.
How's that for being hooked before I started? :D
