Zel & I haven't decided just yet ... as a family that's $30 a month, but if the yearly fee offers significant discounts I can see staying. There is so much that can happen in game ... I doubt I'll get tired of it.

As long as the lifetime subscription is fair enough (like, not the price of a brand new super-elite video card) I'll definitely be staying for life. It's moments like these that I save up my money for (I'm not much of a spender in real life) so you can all keep your Dave Zeeman goodness :D lol ;)

I think I'll stay :)

I wonder when the 2 downtime hours will be--between 2AM and 4AM Pacific Time would probably disappoint the fewest players.

well, yeah - I plan on playing SL until they take away my internet when they put me in the nursing home.

ps, anyone catch the press release on lindenlab.com?

In the future advanced users, teams of players, or software developers will be able to lease "Private Islands" within the Second Life world. Each of these 16 acre islands will reside on a dedicated server capable of supporting large development projects, themed communities, or specialized game experiences.

yeah, so I'm gonna get me one of them doggies too.

:( I hope I can stay, but I don't know, seeing as my current source of funding hates SL and the time it consumes... plus college...

Grr... I need a job. Anyone in Central Florida want to hire me???? :(

I would love to stay! But as I am still looking at the Pros and Cons here compared to other MMOGs, it looks like I might be moving the other way, unless Linden Labs can cut their monthly prices down a notch (even for non-beta members). $11-12 would be great. But as you have already released the press release, that is going to be very difficult. Unless you use it as a bargin or sales pitch after the relased of the game. Just like many sales pitches most MMOGs use (free trial month). Lets just look at some pros and cons here.

SL
Pros:
- Can create anything you can imagine
- Great incorperation of C++/Java Syntax for ingame scirpts
- Great community enviroment
- No specific point to the game of leveling wise except for cash, so it helps more communitcation between members

Cons:
- One of the highest monthly rates for a MMOG I have ever seen
- Currently has problems with lag and fps loss even on the highest video card out there ATM (Geforce FX 5600, 1024x768, all high, avg 24 fps), and will still do compared to the user download contents in many sims.
- Most data is downloaded instead of used on the the computer as content that never changes like other MMOGs.

Avg of other MMOGs:
Pros:
- Usually only cost between $10-12 US per month.
- Are made to handel lag and fps issuse better on launch than SL can (based on the type of difficulty the game is trying to accomplish engine wise)
- Textures, data, models, sounds, and map info are stored on the users computer based on patch release date. Causing less lag for users.

Cons:
- Less of a Community game, based more casue everyone has needs to get better stats in the game, than to rather have a chat with a group. (all depended on users and game though)

Price Comparisons:
Everquest: $13/month
Anarchy Online: $13/month (also free download of game)
Neocron: $10/month (also free download of game)

Now their is probably more pros and cons for both SL and other MMOGs in general. But this is by no means trying to get ppl to look the other way, it is just letting them make the right choice based on the facts they might have never come across. Remember it is your choice. I would go for SL if the price was right. :D

Well, the real question is... is it worth the extra $3? That SL is so different from everything else out there means that it's not really an apples to apples comparison. If you want structured play, SL probably isn't worth it. If you like the creation and socialization, SL is great.

My problem is I want to play so many things. Saying, "$15 a month is nothing, you can afford that." may be true (not currently employed... but I can still manage that). But paying for two or three games (or more) makes each decision a lot harder. But I'm going to try to stay.

I really wish beta had lasted longer, i just joined recently and only have taken 1 class. It all looks very cool and interesting but time consuming. I am already playing Hundred Years War, which since i have 6 characters will cost me a little under 600 dollars this year. That is my love and my addiction. If Beta had lasted longer here I may have become addicted too and had to fork over the cash... But i'm not sure if i have time to become a serious SL member, so to pay the money without knowing how much time it would consume and if i can manage it with school is impossible for me. It is really too bad because i was looking forward to taking more building and scripting classes and really getting into it.

I will be staying. As far as I'm concerned, there is no other online community that even comes close to SL.

I'll be staying if the price is right for the annual membership. I've made way too many friends here to go *poof* off the face of SL. Holding my breath and keeping my fingers crossed!

Well...

No.

No, I really don't think so.

$10? Heck yeah. $12? ... maybe. $15? That's just crazy talk.

Yeah, yeah, load on servers, expensive bandwidth, etc. But the fact of the matter is, I'm a gamer. No offense to y'all folks, I really enjoy the social aspects of SL, but they're not worth blowing that kind of money, for me. I have ICQ for that, I have 3D modeling programs and programming classes and personal projects. I can -- and do -- get my fix elsewhere. It was nice getting it all in one neat little package, and I will miss that. I just don't think I'll miss it $15 worth.

SL is not the only game I play or enjoy playing, and as a college student in the second most expensive city in the US, I don't have the budget to devote 15 bucks a month to a game when I don't know for certain if I'll be able to pay the rent next month. Sure, I can beg and plead and mooch off my parents, but I'm the exception rather than the rule -- and I have some pride. My first life will always come first.

It's been fun, and I like the concept, and there are projects I really wish I would be able to complete that it now looks as if I won't.

The "you blow $15 at the movies in a weekend" argument doesn't work for those of us who, well, don't. My frivolous entertainment expenditure is usually in big lumps, not a continuous investment where, if my interest temporarily wanes, I risk losing everything I've put my time, energy, and money into building.

I'll be interested to find out what the discount will be, but the full sticker price is well over what I could justify for something like this.

I totally agree with you Gail. I am a College student also and it is hard enough now to find a job just to keep up the car isurance, internet cost, gas money, and college stuff, let alone pay 15 bucks for a game that combines all of the nessities that I can already get in real life. I am also a gamer, and i rather spend the cash to buy one of those FPS games like BF1942 or others new games out now. I have nothing against SL. SL is great, if I was going to get into a pay-per-month MMOG, it would probably SL. But that is way..way down the line, when i get my 1st life underway and it becomes boring (married, steady job and all....jokes). I would have to say that my 1st life does come first and as how crappy it is starting to become, I better get started. :D

Well I will miss all of you that I met in here, and I hope the best to you all if you stay or leave SL. Have a good one.

P.S. If these forums go public where non-SL users can still post comments in the general forums, I will be in every so often to chat with ya all. Until then.
Ciao

sell some of your $Linen to afford the monthly fee
05-15-2003 08:22
I noticed some folks were willing to pay USD$10, but not $15. Why not sell some of your Linden dollars to someone for real dollars so that your end of day cost is something more like what you can afford? I'm sure there are people who would buy Linden dollars for cash so they can build more things.

Must be a student thing (which is understandable), but $15 bucks a month is um really quite reasonable, imho.

I spend more on that at starbucks in a week....

Lets see - venti nonfat double extra hot caramel machaito at
$3.50 x 5 (plus the .50 tip when I am in a good mood) = um,
geesh....

$15.00 a month sounds really fair to me, plus a discounted lifetime memebership... almost feels like a gift.
