No names that start with number in the name key database
05-07-2005 11:44
What I meant is that no names that start with non-alphabetic characters appear in the database Ulrika's web page is producing.
Yes, there are plenty of people with names that start with non-alphabetic characters. you can find them here . Hence, they should be appearing in the database. _____________________

Ahhh.
Yeah, that's a bug. If you publish the PHP script Ulrika I'll help fix it ![]() _____________________

big deal

This topic always amuses me. The amount of hysteria around keys reminds me of the hysteria around cookies in web browsers. While I agree with you that the whole issue is a tempest in a teapot, there are *lots* of thing that you can do with cookies that are bad and most of their uses are neither innocuous or necessary IMO. Even though mostly this situation seems harmless, I think you are sort of unduely minimising the possible consequences, one of which is bound to be lots of SL spam. It seems from your comments that you have come to terms with your RL spam and perhaps dont mind it; that you see it as a necessary or unavoidable thing. Others do not, and wont be pleased to recieve it in RL or SL. I do not like spam. I think it is immoral garbage and should be 100% illegal RL and SL. I agree with the European Union stance that cookies should also be phased out as most of their uses are spam or spyware related. The crappy ads we already get on group IMs, and the thinly disguised adverts for services on this forum are bad enough. Though they may be petty anoyances to you they are most distasteful to me and to others. I find the idea of (concievably), recieving spammed Tringo or Porno ads every day in SL alarming. It could concievably ruin the entire game. Dianne _____________________

...I find the idea of (concievably), recieving spammed Tringo or Porno ads every day in SL alarming. It could concievably ruin the entire game. Nor has there been spam now that a database of 4000+ active players is freely available. Just as push-gunning someone off world is an offense in SL, owning a push gun isn't. Similarly, object or IM spam is against the rules (and very bad for the grid) but possesing the keys is not even in the same ballpark as spamming. And I *hate* griefers with push guns yet I own one as I have used it a couple of times to blow lost or abandoned stuck vehicles off-world and into their owner's lost+found, usually to clear an area from a stuck noisemaker or blimps from teaching stages and such. This is not to say I like guns in RL, cause I don't: they hurt people. But I do own a hammer, screwdriver, and chainsaw all of which I *could* use to harm someone but just use them for their pedestrian purposes. Don't villify a thing because it could be used to cause harm or inconvenience, vilify it being used for harm. |

What I meant is that no names that start with non-alphabetic characters appear in the database Ulrika's web page is producing. There were two bugs. The first prevented names with punctuation from entering the database. The second prevented names with numbers from being included in searches of the database. Both are fixed. The search fields accept regular expressions. ~Ulrika~ _____________________

Your service returns b for a and a for b in keys with a or b in them doing a name to key look up. You *may* want to fix this.

I have a program which can automatically grab the rest of the keys, but I'd rather not run the whole thing from my one machine because of bandwidth consumption and what not. If I can get a few volunteers then we could spread it out amongst them? ~Ulrika~ _____________________

I put in all the Lindens.
The software basically automates the process of clicking through all the users and inserting them into your names.cache so that you don't have to ![]() _____________________

Using the quicktime viewers ability to display text files in a slide show manner we could put the keys on display inworld.

By popular demand, I've started an opt-out list for those who don't wish for the search to pull up their keys. If one tries, they'll get the key of 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000. It works now with searches and I'll work on integrating it into the database in the next couple of days. If you would like to be on the opt-out list, just send me an IM from in world. IMs are best as I'm sure to see them (as they go to email) and your identity is verified.
