While I don't doubt the value of this, I have conjectured that this is an O(n) database query and therefore would be implemented as a dataserver event and probably an artificially delayed one at that. Any guesses to the contrary?

if they make a search table for names, then they can make llName2Key() at least O(log N).

because last names are limited to 150 avatars... you could probably get O(log N) (for N=150) + the lastname look up (which could be done in almost constant time with a large enough hash table).

PS: "This" refers to "this level of spam," not "this level of lists being open."

Ah, ok. I thought otherwise, as it wasn't entirely clear. Though now the cat's out of the bag, maybe we will be seeing 'this level of spam'.

Well blaze, if you want your key published so much, why not put it in your signature and get over with it?

Do whatever you want with your key. Leave my key out of this.
You're kidding right? You're actually worried about people seeing your agent key?

That's like giving people the URL to your website (www.secondlife.com) but getting upset that someone posted the IP address (66.150.244.149). That's like letting folks know what your log in name is (ulrika) but getting upset that they know your user ID (512). That's like playing cricket (Basil Exposition) and getting upset that people know your player number (00).

Here's mine:

Agent: Ulrika Zugzwang
Key: 81b730e5-1478-4b59-b5d2-d014d365bd01

Who cares?

Just look at name.cache in your Second Life cache folder and see how many name key pairs you already have. Should LL be banned for providing every user this? :D :p

I would hazard a guess that there is a reason why they are obfuscated, and can't help but wonder what the DMCA has to say about you posting the decoding method :D

I'd say any public list would/should have a "remove me" field, kinda like an unsubscribe method for spam.

But, I personaly would find llName2Key handy.

Any uses of spam would obviously be against the TOS and delt with. So I don't see why it'd be a "big deal".

Its one of the many functions that could be abused, but isn't/wouldn't be. Theres what, 10 of them or more now?

Benefits - 120 Pounds
Consequences - 10 Pounds

Obviously the benefits outweight the consequences here. :)

As a matter of fact, send me all your name.cache files by email (Ulrika.Zugzwang at gmail.com) and I'll start compiling a list of avatar and key-name pairs. I'll put it on my website, make it completely open, and I'll have nothing to do with this ridiculous chatter about privacy. It's an "/etc/hosts" file for goodness sake.

I've tested that, those keys don't appear to be the actual keys of users. They seem encrypted or in some way scrambled. Unless I'm missing something here.

Try putting a key from it in llKey2Name.

If object or agent id is in the same simulator as the task, return their name.

See link for ways of getting AV info.

Good catch. I forgot about that... regardless:

c24a62ec-b7e9-7517-b99c-96a3cfb8351a - Oz Spade

Is not my key ^

So they are scrambled or different in some way, thereby making them useless unless you know how to reverse whatever its doing.

Yes. They are scrambled.

Here's an known-good agent key followed by the name.cache scrambled key:

18463a04-b098-42af-aa02-b7ca0fb7b760
2b750937-83ab-719c-9931-84f93c848453

Notice that the difference between each hexadecimal number is either +/-1 or +/-3. Shown in a string without spaces it looks like this:

-1-3-3131-3-33-3-1-3-311311-3133-31-3333331-3

If one assigns a binary number for both the value and the sign, one could generate two binary strings which describe how the number has been altered. Using the following completely arbitrary key:
  1. negative: 0
  2. positive: 1
  3. value of 3: 0
  4. value of 1: 1

One gets the following binary strings which describe the modification of the agent key:

Sign: 00011100100001111101110101111110
Value: 10010100001001101101000100000010

Alternatively one could generate a single string with numbers from 0 to 3 for -3, -1, 1, and 3 respectively:

10023200301002232202330203333320

The entry in the name.cache file looks like this:

1203ca75-1d0a-7df6-aa48-c7c3234a03a1 1114181323 First Last

There is the scrambled agent key, a number, and the first and last name. The number does not seem to contribute to the obfuscation of the key. The method of scrambling must also use the name of the avatar or agent key as well.

Here is a good key, and two scrambled keys taken from two different name.cache files:

e01e0240-d75c-4957-9be0-07a2ef9b53c9
d32d3173-e46f-7a64-a8d3-3491dca860fa 1114181323 First Last
d32d3173-e46f-7a64-a8d3-3491dca860fa 1115013379 First Last

As you can see the scrambled key is not a function of the mystery number. I'm therefore assuming that the key is scrambled using the name.

Thanks to those who emailed me their name.cache files, I've also been able to confirm that we all have the same scrambled key for a given avatar, so the obfuscation doesn't depend on our machine or avatar.

That's as far as I could get. :)

Ehehe, now you're spelling it out for them, Rathe!

The snake oil was amusing when I figured it out awhile ago.

I wonder if this was a subtle joke being played by SL engineers.

Now, extra bonus points to the first person that helps me decode the protocol stream.

Google ethereal to help start.

LSL counterpart?

Well, I don't think you can xor keys unfortunately.

Basically it's

cacheKey xor 33333333-3333-3333-3333-333333333333

I guess you could substring into integers.

I process everything in perl so there wasn't much point to doing it in LSL.
