Uhh, shouldnt this not be displayed in a gigantic list, instead being searchable (without wildcards) to prevent spamming?

Im sorry, but I did not allow you to use my key in that list, remove it ASAP or you will find one pissed off bunny.
I dont fancy the spam that will no doubt come from a list out in the open. _____________________

Please remove my key, too. I don't understand why anyone would want or need it in the first place, and I certainly didn't give permission for it to be on some gigantic, public-access list anyway.

Take mine off also. Looks like most of the people that hang or have been around the welcome area.

This number looks the key inside your inventory for copying items to upload them to websites, I believe, like SLExchange.com or secondserver.net or Metadverse. I know Metadverse askes you to find that number by right-clicking around and capturing it out of textures in your inventory.
I don't know if people retrieved it off those websites, or retrieved it in the game by simply buying and tearing apart something somebody has for free copy or sale in the game. I'm not quite sure how it would be misused, so perhaps someone could elaborate. _____________________

Each avatar in SL is given a key
these keys are used in script when passing inventory items (and other things) , you normaly dont have to bother playing with them because LSL does it for you. now think about this, 1 self replicating object. send it to every one in that list, about half will acept and rez it, you then have months of trying to clean the thing up..... See where im going with that ? THE LIST HAS BEEN REMOVED The starter of this thread did not own the list, and the real owner has removed it from public view. _____________________

Yes, I see the issue, but I don't see why the cleanup is so hard, but never mind.
I'd like to know how you capture this key then, if the only way I get it is by going in my own inventory. How and where do they capture it? _____________________

How and where do they capture it? I'm not sure if this should be answered. I fear that this is going fuel another diatribe against LSL. Unfortunately, crippling sensors would, as we're always trying to tell you, render LSL impotent. |

I am still confused - no change there some might say. For what can these numbers be used? Should I be concerned that someone out there has my number? And any other questions someone more techi can answer.
Thank you Alexa |

Some things (like this for instance) should be left alone and people who want to realy know can go find out from one of the many places that explain it. That Key is your accounts UUID that key is you in SL, if some one sends an inventory item to your key, you get it, same with messages, and other things. best way to put it is, Your name = you (none tekki) your key (UUID) = you (tekki) Eg. Splat1 Edison = me (big long key) = me Send A message to that key and I get the message no one else just me. _____________________

we got the keys from an object attached to about 3 avatars at all times that went to popular areas that captured them. Yes, I was the owner before my account was banned...but thats a long story and wont get into that

your key is stored not by just us, but by at least 4 private collections and could be recorded when you click an object(a vendor for instance). There are some people SELLING your keys so people can use them, so I just made mine open source

... For what can these numbers be used? Should I be concerned that someone out there has my number? And any other questions someone more techi can answer. ... The fear about compiled lists of keys is they could allow scripters to do object or IM spam. Despite all the concern expressed I have yet to see any reports of this actually being done. Also such actions would be a blatant ToS violation of the type that LL does seem to take rather seriously. Hope that helps. |

Ok, to you folks who respond with "get my key out of your database", and even better, "I didn't give you permission to put my key in your database"... what makes you think you have "ownership" over your key?
I'm not trying to defend whatever sinister actions someone is supposedly going to take using a list of keys like this. I just want to know what makes you think you have the right to exercise control over what someone does with it. Nothing in the TOS says anything about keys and sharing them, so you can't expect to have any right to assert control over a string of letters and numbers that happens to point to you. |

what makes you think you have "ownership" over your key? I own my agent object, therefore I own my agent's key. ![]() Regardless, I freely broadcast my agent key every time I interact with an object. This is incredibly useful for a whole host of reasons, not limited to objects that pay me, objects that dispense product to me, or just about any other system that benifits from being able to reference my agent from outside the simulator in which my avatar is currently residing in. _____________________

I assume the reason Kyzair posted the link to this list is because there is at least one person in SL who sells avatar keys for a fee (or has announced the intention to do so).
If you know a bit about scripting, it is fairly easy to capture anyone's key using a simple script and just waiting for that avatar to come within range of the in-world item containing the script. As far as I know, it is legal to capture avatar keys (as long as you use your own land to place the script on, or have the permission of the owner of the land you use, of course). This topic has been debated before in forums, with some people irritated that their keys are or could potentially be either used in some way of which they disapprove or sold for money. I suppose the polite thing to do would be to remove from these listings the keys of anyone who requests it. Whether the Lindens will make you do that is unclear. _____________________

Don't worry, Prok. The only reason these people know about keys is due to their connections with Lindens. I had a talk with Lee Linden, and he explained it all to me with a diagram. Hope this helps!

One thing, Kyzair: how did you get these keys in the first place on there? Did you put up a sensor near a Telehub or somesuch thing? I saw my key on the list and wondered how it might have come to be, so for educational purposes, it might be useful to demystify your process of "acquiring keys" for those who do not yet know. Thanks!

Torley, its possible to run scripts on attachments. This includes llSensorRepeat. All you would have to do is get a few people to wear your attachment and you'd have pretty good sensor coverage over the whole grid.
Any time you touch, come in range of a sensor, collide with something, sit on an object, or almost any other event that occurs as a result of avatar interaction reveals your agent key. Alternatly, its possible to get the key of the owner of an object, so if you have an object of yours rezzed out in the world, its possible to aquire your agent key that way. I really don't see what the big deal here is. Agent keys are really only useful to scripters and even the most unskilled scripter can whip together a short script to aquire whatever agent keys they might need. I don't see the value or the harm in their sale. _____________________

This topic always amuses me. The amount of hysteria around keys reminds me of the hysteria around cookies in web browsers. There is nothing nefarious someone can do with your key that they can't do in other ways, and they certainly cannot use it to take inventory or money from you, or impersonate you in any way. People can already spam you - hell half the time you have to put up with it because you're in a group. People can send you nefarious items (ooooh).
People send me random crap all the time, half the time I don't even look what they sent me. Keys serve a useful purpose, and now that web based services are becoming more common place, the ability to send an item and communicate with an avatar from outside SL becomes important. People hate the inconvenience of having to go to some aribitrary terminal somewhere and link their account. Linden Lab has stated they will put in a Name2Key function in the future, and until that point, there are already huge databases of these keys out there. Does it matter? No, not at all - and making a big deal about it is just an excercise in futility. Anyone can come near you and get your key - it is a public piece of information, not some private secret account code that only you are privvy to. You don't even need to use your key - the key is for uniquely identifying avatars and objects, and has an important purpose, with zero down sides. Quit making a big deal out of nothing. _____________________
