Relative to the population of SL, what percentile would you say your intelligence would rank if tested?
  1. A value of 10% would mean that you think you are smarter than 10% of the population.
  2. A value of 90% would mean that you think you are smarter than 90% of the population.
  3. A person of average intelligence would be in the 50th percentile.

This is inspired by a study which states that those who are of below-average intelligence often overrate their intelligence and those who are of above-average intelligence often underrate their intelligence. I thought it would be fun to see the distribution. :D

I don't understand how to use this poll. Is it like buying lottery tickets? I am good at buying lottery tickets.

I belive the average intelligence of SL is higher than the average intelligence of the US, so I put myself in the middle... even though I think i'd be more in the 20-30% if it was US average.

lol how funny. little psychological twister? isn't the above paragraph going to skew your results though? Or maybe it just puts people in an amusing bind. I wonder how long before this gets moved to off topic?

fundamentally i don't disagree with your statement, and i also would say that the more intelligent people are, the less they feel a need to tell other people how intelligent they are or impress with flashy displays. There are rules to human behavior, of course... insecurities are unpredictable.

it does remind me of a cynical and snobby joke however...

picture in your head, the average American (to pick on my own country)... what he or she looks like, sounds like... what he wears, how he thinks (or doesn't)... and realize...

that 50% of the country is dumber than that person.

I happen to be extraordinarily intelligent, which clearly means that i am extraordinarily dumb :p

Are we talking IQ scores? SAT? Emotional Intelligence? Or scrabble games won? (If it is the last one, I rock!) :-)

Mensa accepts anyone who in the continental US (possibly now Canada as well?) that is certified to have an IQ in the top 5% of the population.

The International High IQ Club accepts anyone in the world who is certified to have an IQ in the top 2% of the population.

The rest of the world spends most of their time reminding everyone that IQ is potential, not actuality, or that there are now over 100 types of intelligence, or pretty much any other bit of pop culture at hand that acts as a defense against the uncomfortable reality that, no matter how good you are, someone out there is better at what you do best than you.

I find it far more interesting that more often than not, people actually become unhappy if/when they realise they are not 'the best' at 'x'.

Anyway -- there is simply no way to answer/vote that does not, on some level, cast ego or confidence in a negative light. On the other hand, I have paperwork that says I'm pretty darn smart. On the other other hand, I refuse to associate with any of the folks in that group because it seems much more a support group for really smart but really insecure folks. =/

So I am forced to vote for Hillary. Damn you, Ulrika.

I call shenanigans!!

This poll has a diabolical agenda and political bias that is clearly intended to influence people's opinions. What is your unholy fascination with the number 70 Ulrika?! and did you REALLY think we would line up like a bunch of drones and fall for your forum hypnosis? THINK AGAIN!

I qualify for both "clubs", have been invited to apply for Mensa numerous times ("we really need more people like YOU at our meetings - please consider applying!";) and still fall in the category of people who thinik IQ scores are bunkum.

It's meaningless. Well, except for the fact it does allow people who do well on certain tests the ability to socialize and talk about how smart they are. I suppose thats a good thing.

Then there are those of us who actually *use* our intelligence to generate wealth & comfort for ourselves ;) We dont have time for silly IQ clubs.

And yes, I know that statement is arrogant. But I also know it's well deserved ;)

EDIT: Oh and I also think Barack Obama is a FAR smarter choice than Hillary ...
