I define love not as something that happens to you but as something you do. I think the way love is portrayed in popular culture as effortless and magical where you just look at someone across a crowded room and then live happily ever after is far more damaging to society than violence in media. People grow up believing that if love isn't effortless and easy then there's something missing and they give up on their relationship and move on. Love isn't an involuntary response... that's infatuation and lust and it fades in time. Love is a choice. At least that's how I see it ![]() I, too, agree that love is a choice rather than something that just happens. It's easy to love someone when things are new and exciting. But what happens when reality sets in and real life problems start to bring you back to reality? I think this is part of the reason there are so many divorces. If you make a conscious choice to love someone, it makes it easier to work through the hard times - you've already made the decision to work through it. If you feel entitled, that love is supposed to be effortless, then when the hard times come you feel slighted and disillusioned, and giving up seems to be the solution. |

Love is when your partner clips their toe nails and leaves the shavings on the floor and instead of yelling or tossing them out of the house, you break out the mini vac and take care of it.
Love is when you always leave the cap off the tooth paste and your partner schedules their tooth brushing after you just to make sure the cap gets put back on. Love is doing this sort of thing for years and years without killing each other. Love is carrying your partner home safely after they get roaring drunk at your best friends wedding and still speak with them in the morning. Love is coming home from work after being layed off and having your partner hug you and say "Don't worry - we'll work it out together". Love is when you sit next to your partner at the funeral of a family member and clasp each others hands for dear life. Love is when your sitting across the room from each other reading and you both look up at the same time and smile. Love is when you put hurricane shutters up together in a 50 mph wind and laugh about it. Love is when your so angry you want to throw something at your partner - but you don't. Love is when you agree to disagree and then laugh about it. Love is when you've been married 20+ years and you still group around to find your partners hand when you are walking together. Love is a shared moment of silence, a smile, a belly laugh, a distraction, a touch, a life long committment and a struggle. _____________________

Love means never having to say you're sorry...until you're caught.
Love means it's only kinky the first time. Love means that it's ok to walk in the bathroom when they are on the throne. Love means that everything you put on does NOT make your butt look big. Love heals all wounds, and helps him get over the fact that you ignored the 'check engine' light for months. |

I once heard in a Matrix movie, that "love is just a word" and that what matters is the connection.

Love - bah!
Love is a stranger in an open car to tempt you in and drive you far away. Love is a danger of a different kind to take you away and leave you far behind. Love is a dangerous drug, You have to receive it and you still can't get enough of the stuff. It's savage and it's cruel and it shines like destruction. Comes in like a flood and it seems like religion. It's noble and it's brittle it destorts and deranges and it wrenches you up and laugh like a Zombie. It's gilt edged and clever and so sleek by design. You know it's jealous by nature false and unkind. It's hard and restrained an it's totally cool It touches and it teases as you stumble in the debris. And I want you and I want you and I want you so it's an obsession. . . fen- _____________________

I'm down with love. Except for the clingy or mushy kind. Grabby, though, is fun.

The English word "love" encompasses a very broad spectrum of feelings, actions and states of being. Many other languages have several words to represent these various elements of love.
IMO, the purest definition of love is: To know and be known. To me, that definition touches on the deepest core of human need. Also, it seems that most responses herein focus on romantic, two-person love. To address Andie's question, no, I don't believe love is limited to two people. Take parents and kids, for example. One parent > many kids. Lastly, here's what the free dictionary lists as the three primary Greek words for love: Eros is the Greek word for (especially) romantic or sexual love. The term erotic is derived from eros. Philia as a greek word for love refers to brotherly love, including friendship and affection. This contrasts to the Greek terms Eros, or sexual/romantic love, and agape, or detached, spiritual love. However, it should be noted that English usage differs in some cases from the eytmological use, and several of these words refer in English not to brotherly love but to sexual attraction. Especially applicable to my family: Love is a pain in the ass -- but it's what keeps us together. Actually, Muskrat Love Will Keep Us Together. ![]() --------- If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but I do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I give over my body in order to boast, but do not have love, I receive no benefit. Love is patient, love is kind, it is not envious. Love does not brag, it is not puffed up. It is not rude, it is not self-serving, it is not easily angered or resentful. It is not glad about injustice, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But if there are prophecies, they will be set aside; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be set aside. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part, but when what is perfect comes, the partial will be set aside. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. But when I became an adult, I set aside childish ways. For now we see in a mirror indirectly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, just as I have been fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. - I Corinthians, Chapter 13 _____________________

From what I gather... love is like fire.
It can provide warmth and comfort. If you're lucky it will cook your food. But you need to get careful or you'll get burned. ![]() _____________________

feniks - you cynic you!! but I can hear Annie singing this and its great...thanks for reminding me what 'real' love can be! 'Ideal' - well now there is the bite -

What can you say about a concept where the following is true?
"Love sucks, and that's not bad." You can say: the duality...the duality...the duality.... _____________________
