Not having been here that long, how many SL relationships have lead to RL ones? I'm just curious, not prying or anything. I think it's cool when I hear about people meeting in games, chatrooms, etc, and end up getting married.

My SL partner and I met (RL) in June, spent about a week and a half together on her home turf, and had a wonderful time. So much so that she just came and stayed with me for 10 days, just left last Sunday. It's been a great experience and I truly think having had a relationship in SL for several months before meeting in RL let us prepare for meeting in RL. It helped make sure we didn't have any huge differences that would have had to been addressed for the first time in RL.
That said, some folks are VERY turned off by this prospect and even hurl insults at those who have followed this path. I have to ask, why is it looked at as weird by so many? What about it makes a person(s) who meet online look like they can't have a "normal" relationship? In my experience some of the worst relationships I have had came from meeting someone at a club or through friends, simply because people tend to misrepresent themselves and focus a lot more on the physical. Just my 2 cents. ![]() _____________________

I can count at least FIVE couples off the top of my head who have met on SL and are now in a RL relationship.
I agree with you, Nolan. Extending that to any Multi User whatever (MUD, MUSH, MUCK, MMO* etc.) I lose count of the number of couples (myself included) who have met in that medium, extending back at least fourteen years and still going strong. The vast majority of those were not looking for a relationship, but simply formed natural strong bonds with another player which developed to the next level. This format is a natural social setting for some people, more so than clubs or gatherings of friends. To consider it 'wrong' or 'unnatural' is simply an ignorant viewpoint. Some people laugh at the fact that my hubby and I will exchange iChat messages when we're lying in bed with our respective laptops on, but to us it is as natural as a verbal exchange. I trust my fingers to come out with what I mean much more than I trust my tongue ![]() _____________________

Interestingly enough, last spring when my partner indicated that she would like to meet RL, she said almost verbatim what you said here: "were not looking for a relationship, but simply formed natural strong bonds with another player which developed to the next level." _____________________

I think I get worried about friends who meet their true-love online. If only because they seem to rush into it very quickly w/o seeming to know much about the person in actuality.

I think I get worried about friends who meet their true-love online. If only because they seem to rush into it very quickly w/o seeming to know much about the person in actuality. How can spending time online (in my case several months) be rushing more than spending RL time together though? I think that most likely people who rush online prolly rush RL too - and prolly get their heart broken more so because they have already had that RL contact. Online I do not see that danger. If someone starts to bother you or becomes undesirable you can simply stop communicating with them. No clothes to give back, etc. Not flaming you here or upset in the least. As I stated in my post above I wonder why these relationships are viewed the way they are by a lot of folks, and am interested in hearing those views. _____________________

Perhaps they can't hook up with anyone (online or not) and take their frustrations out on people who have been sucessful. _____________________

I slept with Phillip's alt.
![]() Back on track though, I have to agree with that assessment Olympia. If one fails at things, anyone who succeeds, especially in a more recently birthed format, such as online, some may feel the need to ridicule. _____________________

o.O, meeting people online ish the Devil!!! It's unatural, you can't procreate online so there's no point. I mean how can you actually KNOW a person unless you know what they look like, cause it doesn't matter what you're like on the inside, it won't last unless you're good on the outside! And of course you're safer online than in a real relationship, because you're not really risking anything. You have to risk getting pregnant and bringing a child into the world that you aren't ready for before it's a REAL relationship, that's just logical. I mean rl they could turn psycho and throw hot cheese at you or something. What are the gonna do online? hurt your feelings, NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS ANYWAY. I feel better now. So all I'm saying is that because you believe in online relationships you're just not narrow minded enough. Anorexia for the mind, the wave of the future.
