Nicely done Aimee. So if you were going to be titled an Evangelist (trying to swap back to the topic), what would yours be?

I'd probably be a Corn Evangalist (since forums are, ahem, kind of, PG).

I'd be an evangelist for atheism. I'd stand on street corners, with a megaphone, telling people not to be so *** stupid...

Roberta, until you have been on a journey, you can't know the experiences of the travelers.

For anyone who cares - :)

Actually Guy Kawasaki of Apple Computer, Inc. is credited for introducing the market-concept of evangelism to the computer industry in the middle 1980's.

From Wikipedia

About Guy K.

Critical to this notion, is a clear representation of who one is working for, and thus yesterday I called LL for verification concerning how this job would work.

In fact this job does require the person's identity to be hidden and I would not be able to evangelize for Second Life as Merwan Marker - which is unfortunate, as I would have liked to throw my hat in the ring.

No big whoop.

Do you mean who the person is in game will not be the same name as that used on the job?

Or do you mean the fact that the person is actually working for LL will be hidden from the people he is talking to on the forums, etc.?

Well, based on that info, I'd say the term "evangelist" is being misapplied. I think I used the term "stealth" in my previous post, and I accidentally hit the nail on the head I guess. The terms "stealth marketing" and "viral marketing" are used somewhat interchangeably from what I can see. Here are some related links:

I think I'd rather be a product evangelist (in its correct sense), or just promote SL because I like it, rather than be paid to do so secretly.

Paranoia anyone?

Darwin, James Miller and myself spent some time in a missionary position in THERE all on our own. I know a lot of others did it too. It was fun, really. We basically logged in and sat around in a club, talking about how great SL was. We did round up a few converts, too, so it was worthwhile. Linden Lab is smart to take advantage of this style of viral promotion, since a LOT of people still don't know about SL. I like their tongue-in-cheek approach to it, but they should call the person managing the whole thing the Minister of Propaganda! :D

Well, I haven't noticed a reply to my question.

But I will go ahead and say IF they are hiring someone to pretend to be a regular player, and actually paying them to say good things about this game in other forums and places, then that is a dishonest and weasly practice, one which I think should be below LL standards.

And I don't care who else does it.

Perhaps Agent Provacateur would be more appropriate. ;) Isn't Robin the Minister of Propaganda already?
