Should we do away with telehubs and bring back point-to-point teleportation?

Telehubs today are eyesores, and newbie-traps.

Edit: can a Linden fix the typo in the poll please? :D

Definitely the first option, but a lot of people who paid mega bucks for their hub land are going to be unhappy.

I voted for option number 2 "Keep Telehubs, bring back Point-To-Point Teleportation" :D

Keep telehubs, but charge a tax for using them!

Bring back auto-fly!

Down With Telehubs!!!!!!
12-29-2004 07:39
At first, I thought it was cool. The design and all was cool. But then they start getting annoying. The world grows and grows and you have only so many telehubs near by. Sometimes you're ported to a telehub that is not only miles away, but sometimes you are separated buy huge gaps in the grid you have to circle around. Plus Lag. Plus rezzing. Plus security scripts. ARG!!!

Defense on telehubs say they help the people explore and socialize. I never do that at telehubs. The builds near them are usually dull and boring: awful clubs and ill-designed malls, unless they are island sims, which usually have very nice telehub surroundings. But then again they are private sims.

DOWN WITH TELEHUBS!!!!!!!!!!! POINT TO POINT TELEPORT!!!!!!!

We used to have to pay to teleport places. You could fly for free, or teleport directly for a certain fee (based on distance - and the price was never really *that* much). I personally wouldn't mind seeing telehubs left in place, but then be charged to teleport directly to a location (summons would still be free). That's my opinion at least. :)

While I generally never spend any more time at a telehub than it takes me to launch myself and start flying to that infinitely tall red cylinder in the sky, I do like the Lindens' concept that the telehubs force a kind of socialization and require us to (sometimes) view the landscape as we go to our destination.

I say keep things the way they are.

I say keep things the same. Just raise the hubs or make land right around hubs LL owned.
What is the purpose of keeping the hubs AND point to point?

Why have Telehubs if you can have Point to Point? Why not just have Point to Point for convenience?

Definately for eliminating telehubs. They are outdated and arcane.

I am against telehubs and point to point. As it is now, vehicles serve no purpose. Eliminate telehubs, vehicles demand goes higher, the economy gets some life back in it and the value of my lindens may increase back to where it once was.

I say keep telehubs free, but bring back paying for point to point teleportation. It is true that telehubs make us fly to our destination, which I like, it forces us to see the land, but still allows us to be closer to our destination. Of Course, getting rid of big builds next to the telehubs would be nice, because of the fact that not everyones computer can rez everything really fast, so you sometimes run into big buildings. The reason to bring back point to point is sometimes you need to get somewhere really fast, and it was nice to be able to just teleport to the point directly. You'd still need to pay to teleport, but it's a small price to pay to get where your going quickly. I'd say keep telehubs free though, because of the fact that the world is so large, it's a pain to fly from one corner of the world to the other, unlike when the world was smaller when it was quick to fly from one corner to the other.

Good idea. I particularly like the idea of keeping the land around the hubs (or perhaps new hubs) Linden owned, to keep down the eye spam.

Ace has a good point. SL seems more like a virtual world (as oppossed to an assortment of unconnected places) if you have to fly from place to place. Flying gives one the opportnity to discover stuff they never would have seen otherwise. If we revert to point to point there will be a lot of cool builds that get ignored since few people will discover them.

Perhaps a solution could be to alot a limited number of point to point destinations. We already have "go home", maybe people could have a few additional hangouts designated for instant teleporting?

My only problem with the hubs is we could (forgive me, guys) use a few more. Not a whole bunch, just maybe three to five more worldwide, as some places are so isolated they're hard to reach, and since your flying altitutde seems to drop over long distances, I often find myself trapped in half-rezzed buildings.

Either point to point, or a mini-telehub in every sim.

Many times sims with crowded events (server full) have prevented me from flying to an adjacent sim; Highly annoying!

I think we should keep them but have LESS telehubs. LL has mostly failed to achieve their goal of separating the world into rural and urban areas... What I would like to see done with them is to have like 4 contiguous telehubbed sims with a massive buffer zone around them.
I would also like to see extremely isolated areas. Like, places where you cannot ever get to by teleporting. It would make the world seem larger.
I like the idea of reinstating the teleport fee as well. Now that we cant by default make landmarks inside of other peoples houses, it wouldnt be used for griefing.
Teleporting sucks though... It breaks the immersion. I would prefer some sort of "wormhole" that would make me phantom and take me at a very large speed to the place where I wanted to go, with nifty particle effects :P

Make telehubs *outgoing* as well as incoming. In order to teleport without an TP invitation, we would have to fly to the nearest telehub.

Add point-to-point TP with a distance-based fee.

The result: telehubs would become more important to life in SL. They'd attract business and hangouts more than they do now. People craving a spot away from the hub hubub could get a quieter rural spot away from a telehub.

I like the idea of making ppl pay for P-T-P. I also think it should be significant - like over 10 $L, so ppl really have to think about it.

This will also help fight inflation.

We do need some kind of free teleportation or there are many parts of the world we would end up barred from. Vehicles can't cross empty ocean. So keep the telehubs. Perhaps reduce the number of them on teh mainland.

But yeah, either raise them and/or make the surrounding land linden land.

You should never make something more valuable by taking something else out - how about making vehicles usable to the point where people want to use them over teleporting? Right now, as it stands, vehicles are useless because of:
- Sim borders
- Physics
- Poor/slow response

I voted stay the same. The reason being is that this is how its been since I joined in July. However, I am open to changes or at least have a open mind.

I agree with having point to point teleportation but keep telehubs too. Restricting teleport to point to point would further insulate groups of friends, or regular users of a build, from one another; at least hubs serve to present a larger community. I wonder why there are so few hubs though. Wouldnt adding more hubs, a lot of them, alleviate the current problems associated with them now?

I voted for both telehubs and point to point without tax that is :) i remember back in the day when point to point was taxed and me being the newbie i couldn't afford to teleport, so i say make it an option :p

I think you should be taxed to teleport to events directly, and the tax should go to whoever is holding the event.

That way rich people pay for poor people to hold events.

I voted to get rid of telehubs. While the idea of encouraging "urban" and "rural" areas of the world is a good one in theory, it hasn't worked out well in practice. The very act of teleporting does break the feeling of immersion in the world. So why not just let us go where we want? I also agree with the analogy that telehubs have just become 3D versions of pop-up ads. They force you to be redirected somewhere other than your intended destination and then to download a bunch of crap that you generally don't want to see.

It might be fun to create a reverse-telehub technology. I've been stumping for a while on the ability of landowners of all sizes to create private spaces or spaces in a different configuration than the main grid. One adjunct to this would be the option to create a personal teleport pad. In this arrangement, you would use the pad as the means of controlling access to your private space. An av would have to travel to the teleport pad on the main grid, then use the pad to teleport into your location off the grid. When they wanted to leave the private space, they would get deposited back on the same pad.

Residents could intentionally create a "Grand Central" sim, where dozens of private spaces have their front portals. These places would then encourage coming together in a common public area. It could also be done without forcing users of the main grid to travel to places other than where they want to go.

I used to be a hardcore advocate of Telehubs. However, the lag lately is VILE. I mean. I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT!!! I want to get to X but I have to go through W first and while flying through W I end up having to step away from the computer for a minute because mid-flight I lose control of my AV and the screen appears to be frozen and by the time the goddamn thing catches up I find myself stuck inside a locked house two sims over! LINDENS, HEAR OUR PLEA..! Whooo!
