I was wrong when I said 'this will not end well'. This has been a source of great amusement for me. Then again, it may just be getting a good start who knows. :p

That isn't quite accurate, Cristiano. He was saying she was now telling us she was a dumb-ass.

coco

Whoa, now I'm very confused, especially since Sincere (we're told) is a she, not a he. So who is the he that was telling us she was a dumb-ass?

Pictures please.

It is accurate, because he is misreading anti-intellectual. She has said repeatedly that she is anti-intellectual. So am I - I hate the pretentiousness of it.

The pretentiousness of being anti-intellectual? I suppose that is possible, and I would hate that. The pretentiousness of being a self-proclaimed intellectual? I definitely hate the pretentiousness of that.

Whew. Threads always get really ugly when folks with less than 10 posts to their name show up. I'm not sure if it's:
  1. An extremely hostile new player.
  2. A lurker with bottled-up anger who spontaneously explodes.
  3. An established player unleashing evil bile while cloaking themselves in anonymity.

On multiple choice tests I usually select the longest answer. :D

Yes, and it is a very valid stereotype. Have you ever read the literature from People For The American Way? Give it a look-see sometime. Those are Soccer Moms and Scout Leader Dads. It's exactly what the stereotype is presenting, and it's very real, and very valid. ("It doesn't matter that I don't have children in this school district, and have never actually read the book, put my name down for wanting Catcher In The Rye banned from our schools!";)

It isn't an insult to women, or to housewives, or to stay at home moms. It's an insult to a type of person who feels the need to butt their damn nose into everyone's business and try and 'fix' things that aren't broken and that often don't involve them anyway. But those people wouldn't see it as an insult, because they don't see anything wrong with trying to rule other peoples' lives and decide what's best for them.

I did some quick research after reading this post. And I'll be damned. There are others who stated exactly what you did Jon. And you know, your viewpoint and theirs *does* end up making more sense than the people I've heard use the term specifically to insult stay at home moms. Next time one of them uses the phrase in that way, I'll make a point to state this "other" opinion of the term.

Thank you for giving me your viewpoint! It has given me much to think about! :)

While those are possible, I think you would be making a mistake to conclude that all these fresh new names aren't REALLY fresh new names, considering the recent growth of the game.

I would also submit that the new posters are not hostile. They encounter hostility here. They dare to react to it. I hope more of them come, and I hope more of it react to it, and ultimately, defuse it.

coco

Dang, this thread is moving fast. The above was in response to Ulrika's post about the new people being possibly one of at least three types.

She did not say she was a dumb ass, she said she was anti-intellectual.

I am not skating around anything. The real issue is that Kendra has said repeatedly what her position is, and you characterized her as a dumbass.

Hold on there Pen. You might want to reconsider. At some point you might want to be able to jump down people's throats for a perceived misogynistic remark if you feel the argument isn't going your way. (Not that I have ever seen you do this, but it has happened) :D It can come in handy!

I've moved away from those in all but the tightest spots. Now I typically just vanish from a thread or start posting nonsense. :D

You always act like new people are some phenomenom you have discovered. Like there is some wave of "special new players" coming. It has been the same way all along, all the way back to beta. We get waves of casual users, waves of users from particular games, waves of creative users, waves of people from media advertising, etc. There is nothing unique that is suddenly going to transform things to your liking, because people are just people - they don't fit into the groups and mobs you try to make them fit into, they are simply individuals.
