I just made a scripted graphical model in world for the sl sun and moon orbits. I will be giving them out to anyone who wants one as soon as i tweak it a bit more ... maybe another 30 mins of tweaking :p .

sry was a bit of a slack (especially for sumthin that was this simple, but hey lazy is my thing :p )... its done. An in world 3d model of the sun-moon-earth system and its orbits in SL. IM me in world for one :) .

I did something similar Sunday night. You can find the results in Europa, under the tall silver tower. The path of the sun rezzes a permanent tick every 20 minutes.

The results seem to indicate that the path is not the same, but hardly out of line with itself. 30 minutes after sunrise and before sunset is a swivel point. The angle of the sun's orbit (if it indeed orbits SL) is ~140 degrees.

However, it may be possible that SL orbits a stationary Sun. SL could orbit the Sun at a Lagrange Point between the Sun and moon. This would keep the Sun and moon opposite each other as SL and the moon orbit the Sun. As they orbit, SL - flat for all intents/purposes - is spinning with a very slight wobble and at a high degree of tilt. SL could be a half-sphere... like Earth, only without the northern hemisphere. And we're living on the flat surface, unable to see the rounded southern hemisphere. It's still difficult to explain night passing more quickly than day. Maybe it's due to the moon being much closer than the Sun?

You know this is a lot of mess to figure out, and the moon being closer makes a lot of sense, but i want to give a call out to the lindens and ask them to rearrange the sky and the earth in an orderly fashion... or fix llCloud() either way i wish they would do sumthin or try to help us explain all this jumble. OK im done whinin :p . And btw I love all the discussion this is producing, I really hope we are able to come up with a spiffy model sometime soon :) .

If anyone is interested there is a thread hidden deep in the depths of SL history on just this subject... Virtual Astonomy

Here is a short, but relevant, extract...

By Queen Surina Skallagrimson of the Amazon Nation.

"Us Amazons have known for centuries that our dearly beloved SL world is a multi faceted shape consisting of at least 8 sides. Each side is of course flat, othewise everything would roll to the edge.

I assume that the 'short' days you reffer to are by comparison to some other planet I have no knowledge of that has longer days... what is the use of longer days? Untill the first expeditionary settelers arrived on our beloved SL ( a while back now) our time system ran from sunrise to sunrise, so you can imagine our confusion having the 24 hour system imposed on us. Five sunrises a day... bah...

Another assumption that the newcomers have made is that there is but one sun. The mystics of Amazon Nations realised long ago that there are infact FOUR bodies that revolve around our beloved home. Three of which form a perfect triangle, orbiting high above us and keeping station with each other. These glow and give us the light that we call day. The fourth object orbits much closer and faster, in fact three times faster so that it never appears in the sky at the same time as one of the suns. At least it never does on the facet on which we live. Many years ago an expedition was sent to find the edge of our facet and cross to another. The aim was to prove that 1) at a facet edge you could see more than one sun and 2) that on another facet you would see both a sun and the moon simulaneously. They never returned to confirm our theories...

To end on a lighter note. There once was a High Priestess who tried to put about the theory that our three suns were infact a stable trinary system of "normal" stars, and that our beloved SL was not the center of the universe but just happened to be trapped in the gravity well created between the suns. She sumized that the gravitational effect of the fast orbiting moon made SL wobble slightly, explaining the slight differences in day length as the seasons changed... LOL Have you ever heard such rubbish? Everyone had a good laugh at her, then she was put to death for heracy."

Multi star system, thats an interesting idea. But i think we would at some point see 2 "suns" at one time right? Either way the execution was justifiable :p .

It's the first line of King of Pain from the album Syncronicity (sp)

This is one of my favorite songs. I can relate to it... on some level, anyway.

One of the things that tripped me most about Star Wars (Ep. IV) was seeing two suns in the sky of Tatooine. I was fixated on that image and obsessed compulsively over it, rewinding and watching again and again.

You know after reading the article you posted.... I think we should consider actually giving a name to our planet, and in honor of Jay "Starseeker" Powers the first SL astronomist we should name the planet "Mike" (read the article before you call me crazy :p ).

For the answer to life, the universe and everything, (or at least some insight into the name of the SL planet we live on) refer to "What's in a name? "

OK letting anyone interested know that i just finished an in world 3d model of the sun-mike-moon system. Its free to anyone who asks. It's got realistic clouds displayed on it and they r influnced by the wind and cloud density (even though llCloud doesnt work right :p ). Also tracks the sun and moon and whichever one is "out" is lit up. Pretty spiffy stuff and its all open source so we can hopefully get more ppl makin cool weather stuff.
