I'm sorry that you were sick but I have been gone over a week and come back to this so don't think Im not disheartend to say the least.

Think of this as the Tsunami that hit SL and it may take some time to recover from so deal with it like an adult cause this is suppose to be an adult community.

This is a good thing that you as head of SL read our posts. I'd like to say in reply I hope and no sarcasm intended that you spend time with your family and friends we'll all be fine and hopefully all will be back up and running in the near future. Now in saying that I'd like to say this (SL) being a unique experience I feel something nice will be done for all us fans and supporters :-) Take it easy Mr. linden don't sweat it we'll all be fine and back to out happy cyber world soon nuff :-)

Though our planning can be improved and certainly will be, I might provide the small defense that the aspects of SL that will fail under load and expansion are much harder to predict that, say, a retail e-commerce business...So in many cases we are forced to be reactive where of course we would like to be proactive. It is very frustrating, but I for one am willing to suffer the frustration for all the amazing things that such an open-ended world has brought us.


Thank you Philip for sharing this information with us. This definitely helps us understand the complexity of the problem, and why it is taking the amount of time to resolve. Be reassured, if we didn't love SL so much, we wouldn't be having hissy fits :p

Thank you for the hard work your team is doing to bring the grid back up for us!

I didn't think my post was that condescending, actually. Everyone wants to harp about niceness and so forth but you're forgetting something. We're paying them.

If you went into a restaurant and your waiter was daft and messed up the order and brought the wrong food, you'd be pissed.

This isn't the "tsunami." This isn't one isolated incident that I'm freaking out unjustly over. This is repeatitive, this is continuing. If this were the first problem then I'd agree, my post was childish and uncalled for.

But I haven't been able to play second life FAR more than I have been able to. This is why I tiered down my account from the land I'd initially purchased. Because my waiter won't bring me the right food, and I'm aggrivated by it.

For example, one of the things that is currently creating the load on the login system is very very heavy IM traffic, where much of the load is coming from objects in-world. This is caused by vendors, games, and other objects that use IM to communicate in a particular way. We didn't initially anticipate the need to decentralize the IM services on this aggressive a schedule, because we didn't know how many and in what different ways people might use object->user IM. Now we know, and we are scrambling to speed that system up. Ditto for heavy inventory use (the root problem that is slowing login).
So in many cases we are forced to be reactive where of course we would like to be proactive. It is very frustrating, but I for one am willing to suffer the frustration for all the amazing things that such an open-ended world has brought us.


That does explain a great deal. One of the first things I plan to do is go through my inventory (once access is restored) and clean out everything I don't anticipate having a need for in the future. As a fairly new player, I picked up a ton of stuff!

Hang in there guys. I came to the forums to look up something and was surprised so many are still locked out!

Over 2 hours ago I almost gave up and forgot I hit the connect button one last time before I went off to buzz around and bake. When I passed my den, I heard music and it was from my VR home and SL was up and running.

My advice is to keep hitting the connect button. Once you don't get the bad news popups, just leave it and pray that the blue progress bar will move (in snail years). Walk away. It is a VERY SLOW loggin now. So I told my friend on the yahoo messenger who was locked out what to do and after 8 tries he got in!

But I'm afraid to log my avatar offline now. I think I'll leave her running all night even if I'm AFK for the New Year which I wil be, just so I am assured to be in tomorrow lol. kidding. well....maybe :rolleyes:

But try it. I can't hurt!

Well I have been here 2 years of 2 years of being in world thats 730 days mind you I have been forced out 3 times during storms 3 days when moving and recently a 7 day vacation. No major problems for me could be that I have 3 meg Cable access, could be I have an up to date system one never knows but to continually bitch about it and scream oh we pay for it is a crock of shit.

Sorry better start thinking about the free loaders living off the money you spent for bandwith to access the game. 9.95 one time fee only is a viable player for a month then after that those free loaders are living off everyone elses tier that pays for band thier width. Think maybe you should be asking those people for your fair share back I mean seriously since they are living off of your band width your paying for.

For those that think thier 40 or 25 or 75 a month pays Linden Lab salarys better think again as this world hasnt grown to the size of TSO or UO or any of those others. Right now Id say LL is at a Break even point on Hardware and Bandwidth allocations. That 8 mil infusion is paying the salarys till volume of people to sustain the world come in.

For those that are "Heavy Hitters" US$6 a day is pittance to them as they can make that back in either sales or whatever their niche is in a matter of Minutes once the world is open.

So again yes the intial post was childish because all it did was reitterate an already known and existing problem and soon as the world opens up all the whining and bitching will go away. Been here too long seen it happen to many times when people get mad they take it out on LL but sometimes especially when they are busting their ass to try to make it right people like to shoot em when they are down.

Do I have issues with problems in SL of course I do but they are not the same problems as everyone else and to be honest no need to be hateful vindictive or ignorant about it and post childish banter as neither will get the problem solved especially when its something they are working as hard as they can to fix.

For those that cry compensation for this down time does that mean I can cry Compensation for every ass that has sold stolen copies my clothing or Yacht that was Stolen. Can every Creator that has had stuff stolen or ripped off cry compensation for their losses in sales and the fact that their product line was diluted...No we cant so basically GTFOI and suck it up till its back up and running.

Anyway I digress it just strikes me funny how people bitch only when things are bad but they never speak out when things are going good for them...Humanity what a concept.

There's a huge difference between terms of service and decency.

I can agree to the terms of service saying they guarantee no uptime, however if I can't actually play the game for a significant portion of the time I'm paying for, THAT's a problem. That's not "whining," maybe you're one of the lucky ones who hasn't been having problems all December.

Uh. I don' know about him, but I know I didn't sign anything with a decency agreement.

As for decency, isn't that a rather subjective thing? What is decent to me certainly wouldn't be to you - at least not from the self-righteousness of some of your most recent posts.

Then again, some of us, apparently, are afflicted with "I was a Beta dude, fear/honor me" syndrome. My response to that is - well, you KNOW what my response to that is, so there's no point in explicitly saying it is there?

When you've been asking politely 15 times for the right food, and been served anything from a cold soup with a fly in it to nothing at all, not to mention being totally ignored, you ARE allowed to get a bit pissed !
Especially when you pay 300 USD+ per month !

When I make a mistake, or anyone else make a mistake that affects MY customers, for WHATEVER reason, I immediately inform, apologize AND give them a refund to cover any losses, economic or experienced.

Sometimes it feels like LL is just sitting nicely reclined with the feet on the table, sipping cold drinks and laughing their asses off those idiots that accepted their TOS, where they have no responsibility whatsoever for anything !

I know this is not the case, but it's still the impression you get from their handing of everyday matters. They have improved tremendously, especially in the information part, but still have lightyears to go, just to reach some reasonably decent customer service !
