Ah Men. I hope we get compensation, like 2k in game money or our monthly fee refunded. This is getting sad.

So many fucking newbs so much whineing.....you don't deserve compensation and if you read the TOS you would understand that they don't guarantee jack shit like every other game out there...if you can't deal with it go buy a good book.

Ah Men. I hope we get compensation, like 2k in game money or our monthly fee refunded. This is getting sad. At the risk of sounding "evil" here... Let's look at this in a sense... If everybody just got a random extra 2K of game money, then the game economy would take a downturn. Things would have to be more expensive, because everybody suddenly has more money, and the value of money would be less. And, let me understand this correctly... You read and agreed to the terms of service, which, like most others, say "We don't guarentee anything." And while knowing that SL is having trouble because of lack of funds ($8 million?? Paltry for something this big. Might pay their employees and bills for a few months at best.), you want them to give you a whole month's fees back due to two days of downtime? 28 days for free! What a deal! But then no SL when they can't pay the bills because they gave everybody 28 days for free. It doesn't realy make sense either way. Crash the economy, and/or kill the whole system. |

I really appreciate stupid assumptions. Especially when they're spelled incorrectly. There's a huge difference between terms of service and decency. I can agree to the terms of service saying they guarantee no uptime, however if I can't actually play the game for a significant portion of the time I'm paying for, THAT's a problem. That's not "whining," maybe you're one of the lucky ones who hasn't been having problems all December. _____________________

significant portion of the time I'm paying for, THAT's a problem. That's not "whining," maybe you're one of the lucky ones who hasn't been having problems all December. First of all, it's not an assumption, at best your 3 months old. At best! That makes you fairly new yet. As for a 'significant portion', tally up how many normal days of service there have been since Oct 1, and now, and how many hours of down time there have been. Worst case is you weren't able to log in roughly 3% of the time. I don't know about you, but the last time I checked 3% was not SIGNIFICANT. You need to calm down. Honestly, if you think you could do a better job, fine, then start your own virtual world, otherwise cut the Lindens some slack, have a drink, and remember that it's called Second Life for a reason! Really people, keep your panties on. Happy New Year McW |

Sorry, we're doing all we can. We feel terrible about this outage.
Though our planning can be improved and certainly will be, I might provide the small defense that the aspects of SL that will fail under load and expansion are much harder to predict that, say, a retail e-commerce business. For example, one of the things that is currently creating the load on the login system is very very heavy IM traffic, where much of the load is coming from objects in-world. This is caused by vendors, games, and other objects that use IM to communicate in a particular way. We didn't initially anticipate the need to decentralize the IM services on this aggressive a schedule, because we didn't know how many and in what different ways people might use object->user IM. Now we know, and we are scrambling to speed that system up. Ditto for heavy inventory use (the root problem that is slowing login). So in many cases we are forced to be reactive where of course we would like to be proactive. It is very frustrating, but I for one am willing to suffer the frustration for all the amazing things that such an open-ended world has brought us. _____________________

This is caused by vendors, games, and other objects that use IM to communicate in a particular way. A holiday weekend is probably a time when you can expect a lot of log-ons and heavy traffic, and that's easily planned for. I wonder if all the IMs generated from objects are really necessary. One source of endless clutter and unnecessary IMs (and spamming of e-mail) are the notices that an object has been returned from Gov Linden land or somebody else's land. Does every stray prim that get returned have to tell you about its journey? Does every item returned back into my inventory have to have a story related in IMs? Obviously it shows back up in inventory and I can see it. If it's a stray prim, I don't care about it anyway. Perhaps you could just SHUT OFF that nuisance IM from objects returning from some place else? Imagine how much resource space you could free up if you shut off IM notices from autoreturn. |

This is amusing to me. Because I take the time to vent my frustration at not being able to sign on all week, I'm somehow someone who doesn't have a life away from the keyboard? I work fifty hours a week at a very high end New York City travel company. I am also organizing and running a non-profit organization on the side, in the spare time I have left. Somehow in there I find the time to send out fund raising notices and work on the things that I actually created the non profit group for. Excuse me if I find your assumption that I'm a child who's complaining that I can't play my game extremely insulting. You don't know me. I'll go further and say that I probably have a much larger life away from the computer than you do. And I think I'm fully entitiled to the break I get by paying for this service. I don't HAVE to "shuddup." _____________________

If I were running a service which people were using and paying for, if it went down it is my RESPONSIBILITY to get it working again immediately. This is what they are paid to do. This is their job. I don't think any of them do this on the side, in their spare time. It's nice of them to take the time to fix this, given the fact that it failed on New Year's Eve, but that's what they're paid to do. Second Life is not a hobby. _____________________
