Here Cindy is suggested reading for possible "FIC" sightings.

Thanks, Merwan, but I wasn't really being serious. It's kinda like the posts yesterday on disgruntled members hanging out at the WA trying to talk newbies into quitting -- I'd just as soon meet these folks myself and make my own judgements :)

Excellent thread, and excellent thoughts by just about all of you.

One thing I'd like to add is that I definitely give SLers that I've met in RL, or spoken to on the phone (or in Teamspeak/Skype/Ventrilo) a bit more of an edge when it comes to credibility. I think its just human nature. Once you can associate an RL voice and even an RL face with a poster, it brings a life to what that write that was flat and monotone before. It also removes any doubt about who this person is. I don't deny anyone the right to role play in SL, but certain posters in the past have taken their conspiracy role-playing to the extreme to the detriment of the entire community.

While I try not to judge grammar and readability, due to the fact not everyone has the same chance at education, it does make an impact. After spending a significant amount of time online, you should learn some netiquette and grammar simply through osmosis. Internet veterans who still can't seem to find the enter key between paragraphs are especially irksome; its just pure lazyness.

Regards,

-Flip

Credibility Gained:
- Knowing that "lose" is not spelled "loose".
- Being an atheist.
- Spelling "a lot" as two words.
- Using the subjunctive case properly ("If it were ..." instead of "If it was ...";).
- Being politically progressive.
- Giving out apologies.

Credibility Lost:
- Calling someone a "Bolshevik".
- Being envious.
- Posting in the forums simultaneously with a clique of evil friends.
- Posting as an alt.
- Comparing someone to Hitler.

You is always singling me out so I loose alot of cred

I yam what I yam and that's all I yam.

I post it as I see it. I leave the credibility interpretations up to others.

Forums on the internet are a place to have fun. No one on a forum has any credibility with me. The way most people act in forums and the way they are in RL are usually very different. Everyone is fake until proven otherwise. People take forums a tad too serious.

Which is another thing that loses credibility with me.

If something you've read on a forum traumatizes you, or you claim it has, you're probably too thin skinned and overly sensative to be on the net at all, let alone playing with other adults who won't tread on eggshells to spare your fragile sensabilities.

I see the same people crying about what someone has done to them over and over and over again. Yeesh.. let it go! Go play Solitaire.

I guess to me, I mostly enjoy reading posts where I know people are just being themselves and stating their opinions. Even if I don't agree with what is being said, I can respect that person enough to read what they took the time to write.

Now I do form opinions about people based on what they write, and how they present their ideas. A small handful I end up not liking, but for the most part I find myself surprised daily as new topics come up and different people offer their input. When I am reading a post by someone I *know* I do not like, then I do everything I can to force that opinion out of my mind so that I can try and focus on what they are actually saying. It isn't easy (and some make it darn near impossible), and I'm no saint, but I do try to do this so that I can respond objectively *if* I feel the need to respond.

If I had to name the biggest pet peeve of mine, it would be when people say: "I haven't read this thread, but here are my thoughts". :p I don't "hate" people that do this, it just seems to me that it comes across as "I don't have time to read what your opinion is, but here I want you to read mine".

I know there are valid excuses for this (and on most occasions when it is a "poll" question, it can be better to post before you see what other have written), it just irks me sometimes. :o

I haven't read this thread, but here are my thoughts:

Why is everyone always spitting beverages on their keyboards? Does everyone really drink that much?

Whew!

It's a good thing you mentioned 'spitting beverages'. With the way things have been for the last week, I was for a moment thinking that was a completely different liquid-based substance.

Personally, any criteria to knock off, add on points to someone's credibility is snobbish to me. It's like, "If you say this and type like this, you'll be liked by many." It's a big turn off.

It defeats the simple definition of a forum: Public discussion.

Good luck to anyone who wants to be Miss Congeniality here. But come on now ... Ya'll aint that great, yourselves. :p
