The forums have actually been really nice the last couple of weeks. I think the worst it got in that time was a Rant that ended up dealing with Trademark issues in SL. Yet even that thread went *really* well. I've been enjoying the forums lately, and thankfully haven't seen statements like yours above in a while. :)

Yeah. Last real drama storm I remember was that whole business about favoritism and the bank of drama that hired Bedazzled. I can't remember who started, that, though.

I agree Pendari.

As for the topic of this thread:
From: Catherine Cotton
Poll:

"Serious Discussion" forum. The only purpose of such a separate forum, would be to have adult discussion about SL. Any spam, trolling, or off topic posts would be removed. By the mods (or the person who presents the topic. unsure if that’s even an option LL would implement.)

Yes or No?

People voted and it seems like they like it the way the forum is. Sometimes when you put things out in a poll, we think we will get one response. But it doesn't always work out that way.

The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better?

This thread demonstrates why a "serious forum" is absolutely necessary. And why it's a silly idea and won't work.

It's also great fun to see people use terms like "logic", "irrationality", "whining", "racism", "bullshit drama", "triteness", etc., in illogical, irrational, whining, racist, and trite ways, merely to create more bullshit drama.

And equally amusing to see "serious", "adult", "discussion" used merely to represent anything but a serious, adult discussion.

I would like to wholeheartedly ditto Pendari's post. The forums have been an unmitigated joy these past few weeks.

I have no opinion, because obviously I lack that right to have an opinion in these forums. Take a good damn look at this thread folks.

Incite anger, post off topic, intentionaly derail thread.

The use is racist and racism were not to create drama, but to remind Catherine that I haven't forgot her racist webpage dedicated to me. The fact that she would post anything about forum reform is a freaking joke.

I'm not sure why you're so irritated. This thread was long-dead anyway.

How is your opinion that there should be another forum any more valid or unexpressed here than the opinion that there shouldn't be. You have had ample opportunity to express your opinion - people just don't have to agree with it. You seem to want to restrict the ability of others to express an opinion that differs from yours. I agree that the multiple off topic posts don't belong here, but other than that, everything has been part of a discussion - you just don't like what is being discussed.

Turn the original suggestion around. Create a "bullshit drama" forum. Not a "rants and raves" forum, because that would imply at least a minimal rationality and decency from all involved.

Call it "The Cesspool". And give moderators the ability to move any thread or individual post there.

I'm going to be honest. I think some people see -- let's call him Martin -- see Martin having a reasoned discussion about marshmallow peeps. Martin speaks logically and makes an effective argument against marshmallow peeps. Others join this discussion and agree with Martin, swayed by his impeccable reasoning and logic.

Seeing this behavior -- let's call her Janet -- Janet decides she wants to have a discussion about blueberry muffins. Janet likes blueberry muffins and wants to hold court as Martin did on the subject of marshmallow peeps. However, when Janet speaks about the blueberry muffins, she finds not everyone is in agreement. Some like banana nut muffins. Others poppyseed. A few like blueberry muffin, but for some reason, she is not enjoying the same agreement and consensus Martin does.

I think the anger comes from there.

Please stay on topic.

The forum poll results were interesting and telling IMO.
I would have to agree with the results and hold this thread up as an example of why any serious discussion is not possible in the official SL forums. To drag them down to the lowest common denominator makes me realize that perhaps the grand idea of a "metaverse" may in fact be a longer wait than I had anticipated.

I hear ppl claim they want nothing more than a metaverse but actions speak louder than words, it is apparent to me at least without the ability to have a mature adult discussion this metaverse may not evolve as LL or even I wish it to.

Well, let's be honest and more open, then. I think we all know who Janet is, but who is Martin, Enabran, and exactly why is there consensus for him and not for Janet?

And in the spirit of honesty, I'll say this: I'm usually puzzled why certain Martins can be seen as so reasonable and restrained, when they often behave as badly as certain Janets. What's the secret?

on edit: I see. "Martin" and "Janet" are an inside joke. Two layers of meaning, as long as you know something about the groups and individuals involved. Deftly done. Not simple honesty; the honesty of a Janus, maybe?

Ahh. Yes, yes - I think I see that. Thank you. Though I am terribly dissapointed that you didn't use pumpkin muffins in your analogy. :p

Huh? People voting against censorship, against having an overlord judging whether their comments are worthy of the label "serious discussion", and you think that means people are not interested in serious discussion?

I voted against censorship, because I want to decide for myself what I think is a valid or serious point of view. I want to choose for myself who to ignore, and who to take seriously.

That doesn't mean I am "against serious discussion". I am merely against censorship. Instead of trying to limit what I can read, why don't you just limit what YOU can read instead. Just put people who bother you on ignore.
