Have you seen the stingers on the male platypus?? Its horrific. It's venom focuses on the pain receptors in those it stings. Supposedly the most painful sting a person can experience.

Who would thunk a platypus could do that?

I wonder if Noah got stung...

As I recall, you also posted some stuff about the Bible Codes in another thread. Don't let your credulity get the better of you, please.

Tentmaker Ministries and Publications

Charlatans are everywhere. It's up to you to be skeptical and find out the truth. Skeptics aren't cynics - we simply ask for proof before we accept something.

Now having said that, if you want to discuss the origins of the Noah myth, let's do that. It really is a fascinating subject.

Cindy....im aware you've no idea who i am...im a long time Sl'er<3 days post beta>..not that that means anything..but when i post to the forums..i post ENTERTAINMENT...just because i post an article..it does not mean that i agree or disagree with said article..just that I found it interesting....and for you to bring up my "Credulity" when you really dont even know who i am is quite silly...i dont need to be "warned" about what im ready to believe or disbelieve....dont let your self importance get the better of you...please

How long you've posted or belonged to SL isn't relevant to anything, Maerl. I don't bow down and worship beta players any more than I mistrust newbies - it just doesn't matter. If you post something just for discussion, please say so and make it clear whether you agree or not. When you don't, misunderstandings arise.

My reaction was normal - not "self important" -- I connected the dots and found a pattern in the stuff you posted, between the Bible Codes and the Noah Myth. If you don't buy into either one, all you had to do was say so. Instead, you asked if there might be anything to this guy who turns out to be another in a long line of Bible charlatans. And it took me about 20 seconds to figure that out using Google.

You could have done the same thing, you know. And you wouldn't even have to feel self important to use Google.

If you say so. I just wish I'd seen a bit more skepticism from you when you posted the Bible Code stuff and when you started this thread asking about some phony charlatan who claims to have found something that doesn't really exist. You didn't show any such skepticism so what else are we to believe?

I used to read tons of UFO and paranormal books, not because I believed any of it for a minute but because the topic fascinated me and I wanted to understand how so many people could claim to see such things. But when I posted about the books, I never for a minute left any doubt that I was skeptical. As a result, no one misunderstood my position like I've misunderstood yours.

To be clear: I have misunderstood what you said, right?

Know what I did, Billy? I went to Google and typed in "Great Lakes Water Volume".

In roughly 1.5 seconds, I found out that the Great Lakes contain roughly 22,600 cubic km (give or take) of water.

The total volume of fresh water, worldwide, is a little over 100,000 cubic km. So the Great Lakes are barely over 1/4 of the entire world's FRESH water volume.

Then I went back to Google and typed in "water volume earth". I found out that the earth's surface has 1.37 BILLION cubic km of water.

It took roughly 2 minutes to do all of that and type into this post.

...i see you use google as well my dear...

No, not really. Even a "this guy looks like a fake" would have helped. But hey, misunderstandings happen. I've read others of your posts that I agree with completely, Maerl - you seem to be an intelligent, well-read person. But that just made me more perplexed to see you come up with a couple of posts that wouldn't pass the simplest of Baloney Detection kits :)

It takes two to misunderstand, usually. I'll grant you that I may have jumped to a conclusion (based on the reasons I explained) if you'll also grant that maybe you didn't explain your thoughts clearly.

Er, no, because the whole thing is a fairy tale in the first place. (Or "allegorical" if you prefer.)

I'd be less skeptical if we were talking spaceship with species cyrogenically frozen as embryos, etc. Note the LESS in skeptical.

I was trying to find a good summary of an interesting bit of work. This isn't the best site, but it lays out the essentials pretty well. The book, "Noah's Flood: The new scientific discoveries about the event that changed history, by William Ryan and Walter Pitman, is a fascinating read.

I find UFO mythology fascinating too. It follows the pattern of many great oral traditions within mythology (I'm thinking of Greek & Roman mythology specifically). There's a basic framework, but huge varieties of stories, many mutally contradictory, that all hang from that framework and create an incredibly rich and complex quasi-consensus of what is going on. Not only that, but the norm of that consensus shifts over time, often influenced by popular fiction (especially the movies). You also find all variety of belief levels within the community. Many are sceptical, but you also come across lots who are believers in various portions of the mythos.

And I'll try to allow more for misunderstandings.

No hugs yet, though, only on my second cup of coffee. I never hug before 3 cups. Too cranky! :)
